z) acta V i gatfcj gtfforiau. ASTORIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 19. 1SS8. Mobrow's bill, appropriating $850, 000 for a public building baa passed the house. The government pays the Adams Express company 8175,000 annually for the transportation of bonds and specie to different sections of the United States. A Loudon author has imtten thirty novels in three years. This beats the record of any living man, but the writer's enormous labor has brought him only 81,000. The receipts of tho postoflice de partment in 1870 were 819,775,000. Last vear they were S52.700.000. As an index of national growth this will do very -well indeed. . A fair idea of the wealth of New Yorkers is conveyed by tho casual an nouncement that a box at the Metro politan opera house was sold a few days ago for 823,000. The first patent ever issued to a woman was to Mary Kies, for straw weaving with silk or thread. This was in 1809. Tho second was to Mary Brush, in 1815, for a corset A Santa Ceuz, Md., man is credited with having caught 100 quail recently by spreading grain on the road whioh had been soaked in whisky. The birds ate the grain and then became tipsy. . In 1870 the wheat crop of Dakota amounted to 17.C62 bushels in 1880 to 2,830,289 bushels. 1885 there were 38,166,413, and in 1887 there were (52,408,000. In 1887 there were 241, 511,726 bushels of corn. The "Australian ballot system," is the subject of several inquiries from correspondents, and the plan is likely next winter to be before enough leg islatures to make its general knowl edge a matter of interest Tho ballot system in force in this country does not guarantee secrecy, and it requires ballots to be prepared by private or party enterprise and served at every poll. The latter requisite makes it pratically impossible to run a candi date unless he is backed by an organ ization large enough or with money enough to liavo a man at each polling place with his ballots. Under the Australian system the ballots are printed by the state, and all candi dates, nominated a certain time be fore the election, appearjon these bal lots, and no other can be used. In stead of having a separate ballot for each candidate, all the candidates for one office are on tho same ballot, and each voter marks his choice in a room by himself. Tho result is that no one can know how ho votes, and in somo election laws under this system the voter is prohibited from telling how he voted under penalty, so as to re lievo him from pressure ho might not bo able to resist The practical re suit of the Australian system is far more freedom of action, collectively and individually, for voters and great er opportunity for intelligent voting. In order to run a candidate- an ex pensive organization is not needed, and at the election men in the evil trade of buying votes cannot tell whether the vote is delivered and have no way of finding out. THE REVIVAL MEETINGS. Yesterday at the BaDtist church at 3 f. ii., about forty members of the various ohurches engaged in a meet ing to promote a deeper consecration to aid in the special efforts being made by Mr. Studd. In the evening the meeting at the opera house commenced promptly at 730. The song service was of special interest, the large audience present responding heartily to the call of Mr. rsurne, ine leader, to join in the ex ercise. Miss Katie Flavel sang a very impressive and beautiful solo, "Ye are not your own, but bought with a price." Bev. LeRoy then offered prayer, at the close of which Mr. Studd addressed the meeting, taking for his subject "How we stand with God," suggested by Ezekiel's vision ot'Dry bones." He said there would be two classes in the last great day. 1st The class without breath spiritually. 2nd Thoso who have been brought to life through Christ. We all come now, and will at the judgement, into one or other of those classes. How important, therefore? that we become aware of how wo stand before God, before it is too late to change the relation we bear toward him. At the close of his impressive address Mr. Studd asked those who felt disposed to remain after the meet ingwas dismissed for a season of prayer and consecration. About one third of the audience did so. An other meeting will be held to day, 3 p. m., at the Baptist church, and again at the opera house in the evening at 730. All classes are invited toattend.
