Hall will conduct serv ices at St, Helens to morrow, conse quently there will be no sorviees in the Congregational church in this city on that day. Yesterday was a sort of a day for runaways. Jeff always has whatever is the fashion and his team is not to be outdone so it took a little run on Cass street yesterday, just for fun. No danger done except to scare a little tot in the wagon. - -Capt Doig who piloted over the "" bar'the Oakworth, reports very heavy weather outside for several days past. He jays that in his experience of many years as pilot, he never boarded A vessel in a heavier sea than on the day he sighted and boarded the above mentioned vessel. The facilities for crossing the abys mal depression at the intersection of Benton and Second streets has been still further improved by the erection of hand rails which may serve to steady the tottering steps of age or serve as a chute ddwn which the giddy kid may incidentally glide while on his mischievous way. From authority which is believed to be trustworthy it is learned that the school board of district No. 1 contemplate having vocal inusio taught in the schools of the district by Trot. O. C. Pratt, n gentleman ol eminent scientinc and musical alttiin ments, who bears tho degree of 'Doctor of Musio." conferred by Lieipsic conservatory. The case of Henry Sample, arrested tor assault with a dangerous weapon on the Chinese oook, was brought be-fore-Justice May yesterday, and the accused was bonnd over to appear before the grand jury, at the next sea sion of me circuit court, in tne sum oISlQO.v The. accused furnished the nee'essarjr bonds. Tho preliminary trial of tho Chinamen, who attacked Sample, is set for to-morrow morning before o ustice May. .A writer for the Salem Capital Journal, in nn article headod "That -v Astoria Railroad," displays bis igno rance aa to who of the executive offi cers superintends the work. He ought to know that a secretary is only responsible for conducting cor respondence, keeping the accounts and reoording -proceedings. Con ferences and native operations of any kind are carried on only by order of 'the board of directors. Mrs. Mollie Harris, of Portland, has been adjudged insane. At the time of the late Chinese riot in Port land she was standing at her front gate, in hearing of the shooting, She , asked a passor-by what the trouble ' was. Ho happened to be a "practical joker" and answered: "Your hus band was iust shot and instantly killed down the street" When her husband returned he found her lying on the floor insensible. Buou. a senseless, brutal, wanton joker should be severely punished. Tho ntrtainment civen bv Messrs. Visucher and Taylor, at Liberty Hall i J.. tltA .MDniflQl nt xasi evening uuuei tuc auoHww w the Y.JLO.i, attraoted a fair audi ence notwithstanding the heavy rain. Mr. Taylor opened with his inimita ble "Mocking Bird" song with banjo accompaniment whioh aloneS was worth the price charged for admia 'sion to the whole entertainment. Mr. Will L. Visscher, then stepped on the stage and for nearly an hour kept the attention of the audience which generously applauded his meri torious lecture and everybody ap preciated tho majestio pathos and clever humour wnioh made it ex tremelv interesting. The entertain ment closed with another banjo per- lormance oy Air. xayior. nia imi tation of the "Chimes of Old Trinity" was perfect and his last piece of "Home Sweet Home" with variations was excellent and well received. Yesterday forenoon Tan Dusen & Co.'s howe attached to their delivery wagon started north down Cass street, past Tnis Astobian office. Finding there was no one at the helm, the speed of the craft was in creased in a geomotrioal ratio until it reached the Occident corner, when it attempted to go east on Second street. But the craft was going before the wind under such a terrible crowd of canvas that al though the center-board was put hard down, and the helm bard up, when she jibed she went on her beam ends and drifted up against Conn's drug store. Before any of the lubbers in that vicinity could lend a hand, she gathered herself and tacked across the street to the sou'eaat. laboring heavily and steering straight for captain Gray, who lay at anchor in a light craft just abreast of the Occi dent Captain Gray, perceiving his danger, with great presence of mind and brilliant seamanship, set bis spanker, took his keel on deok, about ship and dragging his anchor to west ard, allowed the runaway craft to come in behind him, where it grounded on one of the Occident posts, smashing the for'ord wheel on the starboard side.
