w ASTOBIA. OREGON; FBIDAY L.DECEMBEK U. 1883. Southebx California politicians are agitating a division of the state. Judge Nesmith, of New Hamp shire, was a Harrison elector in 1810 and is a Harrison elector now. Montbeaii is to have an ice carni Tal again this winter. Few men are so care' ful of themselves. The sole mechanical achievement of the Keeley motor up to the present time has been to move its boss into jail for contempt of court A woBKisawosfAx's society, in De troit, formed ten years ago to take care of girls unemployed and get them work, has so thrived that it re cently dedicated a fine building for its purposes. A procession of the London cabs would stretch forty-five miles. There is only public standing room for twenty-three miles of them. The other twenty-two miles have to go wandering about the streets. On the 1st inst, the Santa Fe sys tem began running a direct Pullman service between San Diego and Chica go, making it the longest continuous sleeping car service in the world. The distance is 2.311 miles. Two Chicago clergymen have proved to their own satisfaction that dancing is wrong, because men never dance with men. Yes, and wo sup pose, by parity of reasoning, that mar riage is wrong because men never marry each other. -- .-Ml - SAIEH'S IDRAS OF A RAILROAD. A correspondent in tho Salem Statesman discussing the rivalry be tween Salem and Albany in regard to railroad connection, especially the Astoria and South Coast railroad, says of Albany and her harbor, Ya qnina bay: "Her harbor can be completed only at great cost, and then can only be accessible to small sized vessels. But Salem's proposed ronte leads to deep water, and is accessible to all sea go ing vessels, and as trade seeks the most practicable routes it mnst ot necessity seek that way. Thus would Salem receive the travel and trafllo of a transcontinental line, besides the developed trade of tho new country through which the line passed. The proposed ronte of the road from Asto ria to connect with the O. F. line lies through n section of country un touched by any proposed railroad .route to Nestucca, and ot course as yet undeveloped as to its farming and mining resources. But from Nestucca to Salem and east to Stay ton it lies through as good a farming and grazing country as the sun shines upon, on this continent, and wonld support a railroad itself, as this pro posed route is tho shortest and best outlet to deep water, and any road commnnioating with such a harbor as Astoria must of necessity carry with it the facilities for cheaper transportation than any other route, and would naturally draw to it nil the traffic of the country through v.-liich it passes. And as this will open a direct line of railroad from .Saloni to New York and all points cast, it looks like a city ot the pretentions of Salem ought to take advantage ot each a state ot affairs, and use her utmost endeavors to secure such an addition to her facilities. "When this road passes through Salem, no one will deny that every dollar's worth of property in this city will enhance in value very greatly, and the value of snob an enterprise to farms nnd farmers in the enhanced value of products caused by a cheaper trans portation to deep water, can only be estimated by the amount in years to come. The fact that the proposed route is the only one feasible to con nect Salem with a deep Eea port, in creases the magnitude of the interest to Salem. Now the route from Salem east lies through the Waldo hills, whose fame for fine farms is pro verbial; the further it extends up the Santiam the more of this country it passes through. Stayton is a thriving little town that enjoys tno best water rower in the state, and from that point the Santiam is easily bridged, .having been indicated oy engineers jftbosi one Tear ago as the most feasi- Iflejeist to bridge. "Why don't the ynfie all along the line do something 'io'Xenxe 'iHis route before some bersiorB enterprising section ce- oanrtne advantages r javery iarmer -rioae the line, every man in Salem "wioxrwns property or does business;- ongnt to consider well before no lets the opportunity pass." Some Clatsop county property owners who are slow to grant right of way through their property to the Astoria and South Coast railroad, a home enterprise, for the benefit of all in this vicinity would show more sense, public spirit, enterprise, and business foresight it they would aid instead of hindering an enterprise that will surely very much increase the value of every acre of land they own m the vicinity of the road.
