According to the fearful experi ments of Dr. Foster of the Italian Metrical Gazette, there is no such thing as the possibility of clean hands on anybody. Washed with soap, and with carbolic acid, with any1 and all the disinfectants in coirjmou use, our hands will still remain scientifically unclean; that is to say that a preparation called sterilized gelatine, destitute of livr ing organisms, on being touched by the fingers thus washed and supposed to be clean, immediately develops living organisms acquired from the fingers. But if the hands are washed in a dilute solution of bichloride .of mercury or corrosive sublimate, one part to a thousand parts of water, perfect cleanli ness is attained, and no living or ganism will be developed by the touch of the fingers. It ispftiful to'thint that we are really so pal pably made of the dust of the earth; but it seems that we must endure it, since corrosive sublim ate can hardly be made the ad junct of our daily toilets, and if it were, then the next time we shook hands, or took up a book, or went into the street, we should but de velop a fresh crop of micro-organisms. The fact is that these dis-- coveries of science show u", if they do nrtthing else how-fe.'irfull and wonderfully we arc made, and if we regarded them seriously there is nothing we could eat and nothing we could do which would not make death seem to hang im minent il the air. There is one refuge for the unscientific, and that is in whistling the whole matter down the wind, keeping clean to the best of bejief, and thus taking care of one's self, letting the micro-organisms take care ol them selves.
