Over fifteen hundred men are thrown ont of employment This necessitates the discharge of all the men working at the ..Chambers syndicate mines, and Anaconda and St Lawrence, at Bntte city, which continued to give employment to 2,500 more. No reason is assigned for the shut down. Manager Daly would state no reason, only, that J, B. Haggin, of San Francisco, tele graphed to close the mine and smel ter for an indefinite time. KENTUCKY TEAGEDY. Locsyille, Dec. 8. News of a tragedy in Metcalf county was re ceived to-day. James Dernumbernm and bis eleven-year-old son met Zack Walknp and his son. They had pre viously quarreled. Walknp shot Dernumbernm through the abdomen, and without a word they clinched and yonng Walknp, with a hatchet, commenced beating the wounded man over the head. The viotim's little boy pulled out a knife and severely wounded Walknp before he- could be disarmed. Dernumbernm died Wed nesday. Young Walkup is in a dangerous condition. FISTICSrOBT. New Yobk, Dec. 8. Joe. Qlassey, of this city, and Charley McQinnis, of Brooklyn, fought ten rounds this morning. McQinnis, who is a novice, had his jaw broken in the first round by a sledge hammer blow from Glassey's right. After a severe strug gle in the last round, the spectators with one accord, demanded that the fight be declared a draw, which was acceded to by the referee. Glassey's left eye was completely closed and he was otherwise badly punished. Mc Qinnis was in a pitiable condition. Not only was his right jaw fractured, but his left also. He had swallowed several teeth and his tongue was severely lacerated. The fight was for a purse of $200 and lasted thirty nine minutes. It was a brutal affair ABOUT THE ANABCHISTS. Chicago, Dec. 8. At a meeting of cnarchists held last night, a call for a mass meeting to be held to-morrow, at 54 West Lake street, was issued. It is announced that in case the po lice should interfere with this meet ing, an adjournment will be taken to Haymarket square the scene of the historical bomb throwing, and that an open air meeting will be held there. Trouble is anticipated and chief of police Hubbard, to-day issued an or der holding nearly the entire city police of 1,500 men in reserve at vat ions stations, ready to be-concentrat-ed at any given point on short notice. When asked what ho pro posed to do! Chief Hubbard said: "They will not meet either at 54 West Lake street, or in Haymarket square, nor -for .that matter will they meet abywhere-irr Chicago, .either in a hall or in the open air. If they 'try it there will be a fight We positively will not allow any anarchist meeting. More than that, I am making a full list of all saloons and halls, where Anarchists congregate, and will rec ommend to the mayor, that their licenses be revoked; from this time ont, any anarchist meeting will be broken np or prevented. I don't think they want to fight very badly, but if they do, they can have all thev want" The Girls Were Exrite.t. There was a fire in the second Btory of Mellis & Co.'s millinery store in Portland, Friday evening. When the fire was discovered, and some one began to yell "fire!" firel" four girl3 working in Roenicke's box factory in the fourth story, were alarmed, and rushed to the door. As soon ns the door was opened a dense volume of smoke poured into the room. They made for a small hand power ele vator wbioh runs up from n bakery in the basement to the hallwny near the box faotory. Some one below lmd started the elevator up for tho girls, but it had only got abont up to the second story, when Sally Lamb, one of the girls, imagining it hnd reached the top, stepped into the shaft and fell to the elevator, breaking her right arm. The other three girls slid down the rope to which the elevator is sus pended, and on reaching the cross beam at the top dropped to the floor of the elevator. Two of them were badly burned inside their hands by the motion of the rope, and tho other bruised one of her legs against the crossbeam of the elevator. A Sound Legal Opinion. E.
