Nov. 21, 1SS?V DEEP SEA DESOLATION. The'Qoean'Bed a Desert 'of Slime Af ' ter tie First Mile in Depth. j '..Despite the fanciful pictures which some writers have drawn of -phevfjcean bed, its desolation, at least jn me deepest parts, must De extreme. Beyond the first mile it is a fast desert of slime and ooze, Vchich is constantly dripping a rain ofdad carcasses from the surface, which carcasses supply the nour ishment for the scanty fauna in habiting the 'abysmal region in some places more than five miles from tbe sunshine and the micro scope reveab that the slimy mat ter covering the deepestccean bed is very similar in composition to the ancient -chalk of the cre taceous period, while mixed with it here and there are minute me tallic and magnetic bodies, which have been proved to be dust from meteorites. At long .intervals a phosphorescent light gleams from the head of some passing fish which has straye'd hither' from a higher happier ione. But it is not until we have mounted a good deal nearer the surface that the scene changes for the better. 'Wo now meet with forests of brilliant ly colored sponges, while the phos phorescent animals swimming about are much more numerous, and the neaier we get to the lit toral zone more and more phos phorescent lights appear, till at length the scene becomes truly animated. When only twelve hundred feet separate from the sunshine wo come upon the first seaweed and kelp (twelve hundred leet is the deepest limits of plant life in water); but we must .rise still another thousand feet and more, and get up as near the top as 120 feet before we find any reef-building corals. As plants do not live in deep sea, the deep sea" animals either prey on one another or get"their'fOodfrxJmdead organ ism and plants which sink down to them. .Thus "Maury saysr "The sea, like the snow cloud with its flakes ih'acalm, is always letting fall upon its bed showers of microscopic shells." Arid ex periment proves that-a tiny shell would take -about a week to fall from the 'sbt face to tho deepest J aepins. orace sunngnt-aoes not penetrate much further than the" littoral zone, there woullbe !( yond this perpetual darkness ex cept for. phosphorescence. Many Of the animals inhabiting the con tinental and abysmal zones have merely rudimentary eyes; -but tnese blind creatures have very long feelers, which help them -to grope their way along the bottom. Other deep sea animals on the contrary, have enormous eyes an(l these very likely congregate around such of their number, as are phosphorescent, and many per haps follow the moving lamp posts about wherever they go. And- so bright is this light on many of the fish brought up by the dredge that during the brief space the animals survive it is not difficult to read by it. The reason why fishes and mol lusks living more than three miles under water, are able to bear a pressure of several tons is that they have exceedingly loose tissues which allow the water to flow through every interstice and thus to equalize the weight. When the pressure is removed they perish. In the Challenger expedition sent out by the British government, all tbe sharks brought up irom a depth of a little lessthan threc qnarters of a mile were dead when they got to the surface.
