The pipe is not made out ot ordinary scrap and coke pig"" iron, but out of the best No. 1 charcoal pig iron and sells for 830 per ton. They have enough ore in sight to run a furnace of their pres ent capaoity for 200 years. They employ 350 men and their payroll amounts to 323,000 per month. The government has been building a wharf about two hundred and fifty feet in advance of the old wharf at Fort Stevens. A force of some twenty men is employed and the work is being pushed to comple tion as rapidly as possible. When completed the new whnrt will be con nected with the old one by a double tfack railway. Moffitt. who has been an in mate ot St. Mary's hospital for about a year, died yesterday morning at 8 ooloofc, agedb3 jears. The funeral will be from the hospital at ISO this afternoen: the interment at Ulateon, Joab W. MofHtt was one of the pioneers of Clatsop county, ooming here from Indiana with his wife about the year 1848. He settled on what is known as the MofHtt dona tion land claim, located between tho south and east fork of the Walluski at the head of steamboat navigation, where he made bis home for some thirty years. His children wero six in number, four daughters and two son1. Two of the daughters are dend, namely: the wife of Jas. A. Cook, and Captain P. E. Ferchen's first wife. '1 wo are living in Califor nia, one Deing the wife of Ira AIc Kean. who is a brother of S. T. Mc Kean, of this city, the other, Mrs. Electra ,. Beyiuetou and Da vid were the names ot the two sons. The latter is dead, and the former is believed to be living in Washington territory. Mrs. Captain Wes. Whitcomb is a granddaughter and there are many others, relatives, whose names do not occur to the writer. He was an active and influential Mason, and it is believed 13 the last of the ten charter members of Tem ple Lodge No. 7, A. F. and A. M., of this city, which was organized Nov. 24, 1853. The following names ap penras charter members: Freeman Farnswortb, Henry Mar tin, H. B. Somers. H. S. Aiken. J. B. Marlin, W. 8. Spratt, Thos. Good win, John Hunt, J. W. Moffit, R. M. Moore. He was elected and served as treasurer of the Lodge till 1S55 and was master of the Lodge for three terms, 1856, '64, '66. He was a zealous member of his lodge, and the weather was never too severe or the roads too difficult to prevent his un failing attendance on Lodge night. He was influential as a citizen, and held the office of county judge for two terms from 1854 to '68. He was also a member ot the legislature. As a politician he. was the acknowledged leader of Clatsop county Dpmooraoy. He possessed considerable ability as a public speaker, and was unusually entertaining In conversation. His wit, and humor, apt and ready quota tions of prose and poetry, always held a crowd of interested listeners. Old timers who read these lines will recall the-names ot those who used to gath er at Capt Kippen's, in the Monitor, or in Megler's old Astoria Honse to listen to his entertaining speech. In religion he was inclined to the liberal view ot the Universalist belief and was fond of quoting lines from Burn's that were in sympathy with hiB views. His wife died about ten years ago, and for several years past 'his mind has been weak so that he has been unfit for business, and the recolleo tion of his former activity and useful ness was fast fading away.
