THE UNDERGROUND E1VEE.
Progress of Tha Excavation to Deter
mine a Natural Phenomenon
in North Carolina.
The recently reported discovery
by the Byer Bros., of a cave or
underground river on their land,
near Whitaker's mountain, at
Black's, attracted the attention of
a parly of gentlemen who chanced
to meet at Charlotte. They de-
! tennined to.investigate the matter,
! and have sunk a shaft about 50
feet. Until this morning nothing
particular was noticed, except that
it was perfectly dry, while 50 feet
away a well 40 feet deep is so
near full of water that one can dip
it out by the hand from the sur
face. This led to the belief that
at least a hole and an abundant
drain existed near where they
were working. This morning the
workmen pushed a bar into a
crevice inside of the shaft and de
tached a mass of material, open
ing a small hole, from and into
which the air seemed to rush, ac
companied by a loud noise as ol
escaping steam, and the well was
soon filled with vapor.
This phenomenon and the loud
noise fiightened the wcrkmcn,who
fled from the work. The news
soon spread, and a largo number
ol our citizens collected and re
Daired to the scene, and a dozen
or more descended the shalt and
endeavored to account for or dis
cover the source of the sounds,
which were plainly heard on the
top of the ground, but more plainly
when in the well. All agree
that it is the sound of running
water over a shoal, perhaps 100
feet lower down, and must be a
largo stream. Rocks that were
taken from an old excavation still
on the ground show unmistaken
signs of the action of swift-moving
water. The sounds now heard
are unmistakably those of a con
siderable underground river. It
is probable that 20 feet mere of
excavation will have to be made
before it will be definitely known
what is the nature and extent of
the excavation it has created in
this vicinity, and of jvhat value it
ma be as a natural curi
osity or point of interest. The
men now working are pro
tected ajrainst anv sudden fall of
the bottom of the shaft or roof il
the subterranean cavern.
Mr. N. V. Hardin says it is to
him plainly a waterfall of consid
erable size, falling at least ten feet
and removed two hundred feet to
the north of the shaft. Ex-senator
J. G. Black, Mr. Reese, Mr.
Byers, J. E. Jones and others who
descended the shaft, agree that
the sound is that of a large stream
flowing over shoals of frequent
but not great fall, and that is
nearly underneath the shaft and
not to exceed one hundred feet
away, while the' believe twenty
feet at most separate, the bottom
of the shaft from the roof of the
cavern or underground chamber
through which the water passes.
The gentlemen who are bearing
the expense will push the work to
a finish, and we shall soon bo able
to give you more definite informa
tion. Special to Charleston jre?ca
and Courier.

TJ. S. Naval Ordnance
The annual report of commo
dore Sicard, chief of the bureau of
ordnance, to the secretary of the
navy, contains the following esti
mates for the fiscal year ending
June 30, 1889: Fuel, tools, ma
terial, labor, prizes, proofs, batter
ies of a new type for the two ships
now in the service, general arma
ment with secondary batteries and
small arms, 514,150; general re
pairs, 15,000; miscellaneous, $10,-
000; civil establishments at navy
yards, S24,48U; torpedo stations,
70,000; towards the armament of
vessels authorized, 4,077,000; and
for completion of the gun plant at
the Washington naw yards, G25,
000; total, S5,436,130. The high
power steel cannon for the navy
completed to date are two five
inch, 24 six-inch, eight eight-inch,
and three 10-inch. Since the last
report a new design of a six-inch
gun has been completed, and 32 of
these guns are in course of con
struction. Progress in Marine Engineering.
An illustration of the progress
which has characterized marine en
gineering ib found in the fact that
up to 1881 the greatest power put
into one ocean vessel was about
8,000 indicated horse power in the
case of the ships Damlolo,J)uilio,
Inflexible and Admiral Duperre.
I ii loal-ba the Italia and Xiepanto
were being constructed, with the
enormous figure, each of 18,1)00 in
dicated hoise power; and now the
Italian government has in progress
the He Umberto- and Sicilia, and
lastly the Sardegna, the engines
for which, constructed by a Naples
company, are to develop nearly
23,000 indicated horse power.
Among the various features of
note in this remarkable vessel, as
described, arePfour sets of triple
compound engines, two sets of en
gines on each shaft, the vessel ot
course being twin-screw. The
working machinery also comprises
eighteen return tube boilers, hav
ing eacn lour lurnaces, and tnc
working pressure will be 150
pounds to the square inch. The
piston speed is rated at 1 ,020 feet
per minute.
