ClimCryfePlteMCaM ST0BT OF THE ".AFTON" Providential Eseapa of The Crew to Two Ship's Boats. In conversation yesterday with Capt Gilmour of the Assel, he gave us some particulars of the loss of the bark Afton then under his command, which in many points perhaps has never been parallelled. In Marob. last year, in a dense fog, the Afton bound for San Diego, CaL, struck on a coral reef off the island of Liaianski, about 800 miles west of Honolulu, S. I. The ship floated off the reef, but in suoh a leaky condi tion it became necessary to abandon her. The ship's company all told, numbered nineteen. They took the two best boats, and with the captain in charge of one and the mate the other, they left the ship to her fate. The wind not favoring their course to Honolulu, they were compelled to take the trade winds in the opposite direction. For 29 days they sailed on and on, and strange to relate, dur ing all this time they made 3,000 miles, the two boats never parting company till -they both landed at Guan, one ot the Ladrone islands. About three weeks after leaving the vessel, the mate, standing up to take off hia coat, by a sudden lurch of the boat fell overboard, he sank and was never seeu to rise to the surface. The shipwrecked mariner suffered greatly from thirst in this tropical olimate, and for some time before reaohing land, their allowance was reduced to a pint of water a day each. Each boat had been supplied with three bags of hard bread, and by ju dicious management lasted them till they landed. How Ken Sir. If we know all the methods of ap proach adopted by an enemy we are the better enabled to ward off the danger and pospone the moment when surrender becomes inevitable. In many instances the inherent strength of the body suffices to enable it to op pose the tendency toward death. Many however have lost these forces to such an extent that there is little or no help. In other cases a little aid to the weakened Lungs will make all the difference between sudden death and many years of useful life. By mutual arrangement among sev eral of the pastors ot the churches in this city, Thanksgiving service will be held at eleven o'clock this morn ing, in -the Presbyterian church. Bev. A. Leltoy, the eloquent pastor of the Baptist church, has been se lected to preach the Thanksgiving sermon. It has been customary at this annual service to take up a col lection for some benevolent purpose; on this occasion it will be donated to the Astoria Yonng Mon's Chritstinn Association, and will be worthily be stowed, as all the work of this associ ation ot yonng men, is benevolent work. Its comfortable reading room, well equipped gymnasium, organized classes for useful instruction, and other commendatory features; all cost money to support, and are all open to young men, at their; extremo minimum cost, and in addition calls for temporary financial assistance from worthy young" men seeking em ployment, is of common occurrence, the society therefore, is eminently deserving of pecuniary support from this community.
