On April 3, Emma Eliz abeth Smith, a woman of the town, was murdered in Whitechapel. No? 2. On August?, 1888, the body of Martha Tabram, a hawk er, was found on the first floor landing of the George Yard build ings, Commercial street, Spital fields. The head was nearly sev ered from the body, and there were .thirty-two stab wounds, be sides tho usual mutilations. The murder was committed between midnight and dawn. No. 3 Mary Ann Nichols, aged 42, a woman of the lowest class, was killed and mutilated like the rest. Her body was found in tho street in Buck's row, Whitechapel, in the early morning of Friday, August 31. She had evidently been killed somewhere else and her body carried where it was found, for little blood was discov ered where the body lay. No. 4 Just a week after tho killing of the Nichols woman, Annie Chapman, aged 45, another fallen woman, was similarly mur dered and mutilated. Her body was discovered in the back" yard of 29 Hanbury street, 100 yards from the place where the Nichols woman's remains were found. She must have been butchered after 5 a. St., for she was drinking with a man, probably her murderer, at that hour in a public house near by. On the nail 'near the body was written, in chalk: "Fivoj fifteen more, then Igivo myself up." No. 5 On Sunday, September 23, a young woman was murdered at Gateshead, near Newoastlo-on-Tyne, in the north of England. ah toe circumstances, even to tne peculiar mutilation of the body, point to the "Whitechapel fiendcas the murderer. No. G Another Whitechapel woman, Elizabeth Stride, nick named "Hippy Lip Annie," 40 years old, was murdered in Ber- ners street, on Sunday, Septem ber 30, at about 1 a. si. Her throat was cut, but there was no slashing of the remains. The body was warrri when found and and the murderer had been appar ently frightened away. No. t. Fifteen minutes after the discovery of the butchery of "Hippy Lip Annie" the mutilated body, of another victim, a de graded woman of the Whitechapel district, named Catharine iiddowes, was found in the southwest corner of Mitre square. No. 8. On October 2 the high ly decomposed remains of a wo man, shockingly mutilated and fiving evidence of having 4een illed by the Whitechapel mur derer, was found on the site of the projected Metropolitan opera house, on the Thames embank ment. This was evidently one of the "five" to which the fiend re ferred when he chalked the legend over the body of Annie Chapman in Danbury street on September 8. This place is near Charing Cross,' three miles west of the White chapel district. No. 9. The last murder, on November 9, took place in a house in a little lane called Dorset street, near Commercial street, Snital fields. The name of tbe shock ingly mutilated victim was Mary Roily, bhe was a native ot .Lim erick. Comfort Under the Waistband.
