It is reported thatH. F.Beecher
has tendered his resignation as cus

The capitol at Salem is now
equipped with a hydraulic passenger
and freight elevator.
Following are the official returns
o the vote ot Virginia: Cleveland,
151,977; Harrison, 150,442; Cleveland's
majority, 1,535. The vote in 1884 was:
Cleveland, 145,497; Blaine, 139,356; to
tal, 284,853; a Democratic loss of
4,800.
Says the Chicago Times, Democrat,
"within the next fonr years the whole
aspect of the field will be changed.
New York will lose its relative im
portance in the electoral college. The
western states will determine the con
test. For some years yet speculation
upon the attitude and the leadership
of parties in 1892 willbe mere groping
in the dark."
At the meeting of the woman suf
frage association in Cincinnati on the
21st inst, a resolution was adopted to
petition state legislatures to grant
women state, municipal and national
suffrage, and to petition congress to
submit a constitutional amendment to
enfranchise women. Also a resolu
tion condemning the recent decision
on woman suffrage by the supreme
court of "Washington territory as un
sound in law and without foundation
in justice.
The 'official count- in California
shows the election of DeHaven in the
first, Biggs in the second, McKenna
in the third, Horrow in the fourth and
Van Dever in the sixth are elected,
while the official returns in the fifth
district are not complete. In tho leg
islature the Bepublicans have sixteen
in the senate, and the Democrats
twenty-two, with a vacancy in the
twelfth district, caused by tho death
of Chandler, Republican. In tho
assembly the Bepublicans have thirty
nine, and the Democrats forty-one;
a Democratic majority on joint ballot
of eight
.
The official returns for Klamath
and Tillamook counties, of this state,
have not yet been received. There
has been a falling off in the vote of
the eastern Oregon and coast counties
on account of neglect, that the first
promises of a greatly increased vote
in the state have not been made good.
The total vote of the state will be a
little less than 62,000, and Harrison's
plurality will be about 6,800, or about
609 less than Hermann's plurality last
June. The prohibition vote so far as
reported is 1,417, and the labor vote
254. These latter figures will proba
bly not be much increased by tho
returns yet to be received.
-- I, m m

Ever since the incorporation of the
Astoria Btfilding and Loan Associa
tion, nineteen months ago, it has
been evident that its projectors pos
sessed sound business sense. The
association immediately upon its
establishment proved to be a most
popular and successful scheme for
investment and improvement in city
property, and the demand for stock
was so great that four series of the
stock were issued in rapid succession
and it became evident that in order
to aocommodate the increased de
mand for its stock it would be neces
sary to increase the capital.
Yesterday the directors of the asso
ciation filed supplementary articles
of incorporation in the county clerk's
office increasing the capital stock of
the association from S400.000 to
800,000, divided into 4,000 shares of
a par value of S200 each.
Some of the successful business
men of the city are manaeincr the
affaire of the association and under
their supervision it will, no donbt, in
the future as in tho past prove a pop
ular means of investment and a great
aid to many desiring to improve their
city property.
