Guiana Toads That Swallow Burning Ooala With Great Eelish. Chicago Tribune. The author of "Canoe and Camp Life in British Guiana" is respon sible for a remarkable toad story. One of his men was Alexander Paulie, who had seen a good deal of brush life, was acquainted with the habits of many birds and quad rupeds, and about animals, especi ally tigers, could tell wonderful tales. "His stories of tho fabulous 'water mules' and 'water monkeys' prepared me to accept just as much of his stories as I liked, so that one night in camp, when he asked me if I had ever seen a toad eat fire, I conscientiously replied in the negative and added that I did not believe that any one else had seen them do so either. He said that when he next saw a toad he would show me that it could swallow a live coal without any apparent inconvenience. "When, therefore, one evening in an open-sided house on the upper Demerara, a number of common toads came hopping about on its clay floor Paulie said he would prove his words. He got i few small live coals about the size of a dice from the wood fire and threw them upon the ground in front of a toad, while I closely watched the result. "The toad hopped up to one of the red-hot pieces of wood ember, leaned forward, darted out its tongue, to which the coal adhered, and drawing it in hastily swal lowed the tempting morsel, seem ingly to its entire satisfaction. It remained stationary for a short space of time and then hopped merrily away. "Paulie then informed me that though redhot wood ember did not hurt these creatures, a piece of red hot nail was too much for them. He made the experiment once with a short piece of red hot nail, which the unsuspecting toad swallowed, but the iron burnt its way out, and tho toad went into convulsions which terminated in its death." A labor committee will be sent to tho Connecticut legislature at its next session, to make requests in the interest of labor. The com mittee will ask among other things to have Labor day made a legal holiday in that state. The citizens of Dijon boast that they have the oldest poplar tree in France, but just how old it is no one knows. It is 122 feet high, 45 feet in circumference at the base, and 23 feet in circumference 15 feet from the base. Y. O. TuRgle, LaGranrje, Ga , writing about Darbys Prophylactic Fluid, says: "It is a priceless jewel as a disinfectant and deodorizer. My wife states for tho benefit of young mothers that it is a valuable adjunct to the nursery." It is equally so to parents travelling with children. lv ot only is the fluid invalu able as a deodorizer, but a few drops added to the water in battiirjc will re move nil eruptions from the skin, chaf ing, etc., anu greatly rciresn ana soot ne. "Beer wagon drivers eat less and drink more than any class of people living." The speaker was a big brewer apd knew what he was talking fabout. "Yes," he continued, "the wagon drivers drink beer so . frequently and so continuously that they are almost constantly in a drowsy condition. They drink mechanically, whether they want it or not, and I never knew one to refuse an invitation to have more. They seem to think it is their duty to swill all the beer they can put down. They get into the habit at the brewery. Every brewery has what is called a tap room, which is nothing more nor less than a free bar. Beer is al ways on tap there, and the em ployes have free access to it, with the privilege of helping themselves whenever they please. Whenever a breweryman goes to the taproom for beer he never drinks fewer than two "glasses. These are turned off in the twinkling of an eye. The men drink so much that they lose their natural inclination to eat like other people. They seldom eat a hearty meal, a bi e now and again between drinks be ing sufficient to appease the appe tite. There are few brewerymen who drink less than a hundred glasses of beer aday, and I know of some who never go to bed with out taking in that number and twenty-five more." Old Sergeant Subers relates the following as strictly true, and says it can be vouched for by forty of the most influential citizens of East Macen: Out on the plantation of Mr J. tr. hvans, near Macon, there are a great many moccasins, especially about tho mill pond. One little pond near the mill is a favorite re sort, and they congregate in great numbers about it. It is supplied by the rains, and last summer, during the protracted draught, it went almost dry, with a great number of snakes to mourn-the loss of the water. The snakes did not like to be evicted by the dry weather, so they crawled out in a single file from the little pond that lay below tho level of tho mill pond. When the first snake, or leader, had reached the water of the mill pond a halt was called, and each snake proceeded to swal low the tail of the snake in front of him, until each mouth was filled with a tail, and then every snake in the long line proceeded to shed its skin and crawl out. The shed skins formed a long length of hose, which, acting like a syphon, drew water from the mill pond and filled the little pond, and, what is better. kep: it full all summer. 3l'aron Telegraph.
