" "Wages in 1800.
- The condition of the wage class
of that day (1800 A. D.) may be
well examined; it is still of in
struction for social agitators. In
the great cities unskilled work
men were hired by the day,
bought their own food and found
their own lodgings. But in the
country, on the farms, or wherever
a hand was employed on some
public work, they were fed and
lodged by the employer and given
a few dollars a month. On the
Pennsylvania canals the diggers ate
the coarsest diet, were housed in
the rudest sheds' and paid &G n
month from May to November,
and S5 a month from November
to May. Hod carriers and mortar
mixers, diggeis and choppers,who,
from 1793 to 1800, labored on the
public buildings and i-ut the tiei't?
and avenues of "Washington chy,
received S70 a year, or, if ihey
wished, $G0for afl the work ihcy
could perform fiom March 1st to
December 20ih. The hours of
work were invariably Ironi sunrise
to sunset. Wages at Albany and
New York were three shilling-, or
as' money then went, 40 cents a
day; at Lancaster SS to $10 a
month; elsewhere in Pennsylva
nia workmen were content with 5G
in summpr and 3 in winter. At
Baltimore men were jlad I i be
hired at IS pence a day. Xi-ne by
the month a-ked inoie tli.ui j'fi.
At Fredericksburg the price of
labor was from o to 7. In Vir
ginia white men employed by the
year were given jCIG currency;
slaves when hired iere clothed
and their masters paid X'l a month.
A pound Virginia money was in
federal money 3.33. The aver
age rate ol wages the land over
was, therefore, 05 a ear with
fooil and perhaps lodging. Out of
this small sum the workman must,
with his wife's help, maintain his
family. JIcMaster's Hisfori of

That "poor back" is held responsible for more than its share of the sufferings cf

Such has been the recent progress tn our branch of industrr that we arc now able to affirm that the
Tames Means' 5 1 Shoe 13 la every respect equal to the shoes which only a few ears ago were retailed at eliht
jr ton dollars. If you will try on a pair you will bo convinced that we do not exaggerate. Ours are the
irlglnal $3 and $1 Shoes, and those who lmltato our system of business are unable to compete with us la
quality of factory products. In oar lines wo aro the largest manufacturers In the United States.
One of our traveling salesmen who Is now visiting the shoe retailers of tho Pacific, Coast and Hocky
tlountaln Region writes from there as follows :
"I am more than satisfied with the results of my trip. 1 nave thru far succeeded in placlngour foil
Jne In tho hands of 'A No. 1' dealers In every point I have visited." lie goes on to say. "This is a
splendid region for as to sell shoes In, because most of tho retailers ore charging their customers at
retail about double tho prices which the shoes havo cost at wholesale. The consequence Is that the
people who wear shoes nro paying six or seven dollars a pair for shoes which ore not worth as much as oar
JAMES MEANS' 83 and 84 SHOES. Our shoes with their very low retail prices stamped on the
soles of every pair are breaking down the high prices which have hitherto ruled In the retail markets here,
ind when a retailer puts a full lino of goods la his stock they at onco begin to go off like hot cakes, so great
U the demand for them." -
Now, kind reader. Just stop and consider what the above signifies so for as you aro concerned. It
assures yoa that If you keep on buying shoos bearing no manufacturers' name or flxed retail price stamped
an the soles, you cannot tell what you are getting and your retailer Is probably making you pay double
what your shoes have cost him. Now, can you afford to do this while we aro protecting you by stamplni
surname and thenxed retail prlco upon tne soles of our shoes before they leave our factory so that you
;annot bo made to pay more for your shoes than they ore worth ?
Shoes from our celebrnted factory aro Bold by wlde-nvrnUo retailer in nil parti ot
