ASTOBIA. OREGON:
WEDNESDAY
JJOVEMBEB21. 18S8.
The Augusta, Ga., Chronicle of the
19th, publishes a letter from Gen.
Harrison to its editor, declining at
the time to comply with its request
to write something on what is com
monly called "the southern question."
The letter concludes as follews:
"What I have said during the cam
paign is accessible to you, and when
the appointed time arrives I shall not
hesitate to express such views as I
hold, and shall hold all my views sub
ject to modification upon farther con'
sideration." The general's remarks
prove him to be a very discreet man.

The New York World of the 19th
insi, prints dispatches from editors
all over the south, in answer to a
query how the new south accepts the
result of the election, and if bour
bonism and sectionalism are dead and
buried. The replies, except in a few
instances, are iu substance that
southern Democrats have no welcome
for a Republican administration,
whether under Harrison or any other
man. The most of them declaring
that if the principle of protection is
admitted to be right, the Democratic
party must be admitted to be wrong.
and that they are not prepared to do;
that the only hope of the south is in
remaining solid; that sectionalism
will remain alive just so far as malig
nants of the north vitalize it by their
libels upon and misrepresentations of
the south. In a few instances there
is a desire and hope expressed to see
Harrison's administration prove to be
one that the pouth will be able to en
dorse.

London, Nov. 20. The Parnell
commission is sitting. Attorney gen
eral Webster, counsel Tor the Times,
complained of the difficulty experi
enced in bringing witnesses from
county Kerry, He called the judges'
attention to an article in the Kerry
Sentinel, Edward Harrington's paper,
which stated, that the judges com
posing the Parnell commission are
showing signs of measles now. al
though at the opening of the'inquiry
they appeared to be spotless. The
judges were the creatures of a con
spiracy, entered into by the govern
ment and the Times, and were mani
festly united in their prejudice.
une attorney general appealed to
tne court to tace action in the mat
ter, as such publications tended to
defeat justice, and amounted to the
grossest contempt.
Keid in behalf of Harrington, com
plained that no notice of a charge of
this character having been given, it
was absolutely impossible to make
answer at present. Ho asked that
the matter be adjourned until to-morrow.
Presiding justice Hammen and
the attorney general ocreed to this
and the matter stood over. i
Examination of witness was tLcu j
resumed. Farmer Culloty, of Castle
island, county Kerry, testified that
because he served notice on tenants
in 1882, two men visited him, and one
of them struck him with a spade.
The other shot him on the leg. The
leg had to bo amputated. On cross
examination he said the quarters of
the nearest branch was six miles dis
tant from the farm. He considered
rents throughout Kerry too -high.
He denied that the two men who at
tacked him wore relatives of a servant
girl whom he had wronged.
A great amount of political engineer
ing will be done by friends of candidates
to secure for tlieir man the first place on
the ticket, and the best man will prob
ably secure the coveted place. Then if
indorsed by the majority of the people,
the election is assured. Electric Bitters
lias been put to the front, its merits
missed rnion. has been indorsed, and
unanimously given the first place
among remedies peculiarly adapted to
theielief and cure of all Diseases of
Kidneys, Liver and Stomach. Klectric

" I unhesitatingly add my
testimony to the great bene

was afflicted for several
years with disordered Liver,
which resulted in a severe
attack of Jaundice. I had
good medical attendance, but
it failed to restore me to
the enjoyment of my for
mer health. I then tried
the most renowned physi
cians of Louisville, Ely., but
all to no purpose, where
upon I was induced to try
Simmons Liver Regulator.
I found immediate benefit
from its use, and it ulti
mately restored me to the
full enjoyment of health."

company, to-day purchased from

fourths interest in his street railway
system. Bennett has expended $25,

franohise over all the principal streets
of the city, most of which he already
occupies. Villard and Oakes pay
8100,000 for their interest. The com
