Host Familiar Masculine Habit.
Men generally cross their legs
when there is least pressure on
their minds. You will never find
a man actually engaged in busi
ness with his legs crossed. The
limbs at those times are straighter
than at any other, because the
mind and body work together. A
man engaged in auditing accounts
will never cross his legs, neither
will a man who is writing an arti
cle, or who is employed in any
manner where his brain is actually
engaged. When at work in a sit
ting posture the limbs naturally
extend to the floor in a perfectly
straight line. A man may cross
his legs if he is sitting in an office
chair discussing some proposition
with another man, but the instant
he becomes really in earnest and
perceives something to be gained
his limbs uncross quick as a flash,
he bends forward towards his
neighbor and begins to use his
hands. This is a phase that I be
lieve you will always observe.
Men often cross their legs at
public meeting, because they go
there to listen or to be entertained;
they are not the factors in the per
formance, and they naturally place
themselves in the most comforta
ble position known to them
namely, leanimr well back in their
chairs and crossing their legs. A
man always crosses his legs when
he reads a newspaper, but is more
apt lo to lie down "when he reads
a book. He reads a paper, of
course, to inform himself, but at
the same time the perusal of its
contents is recreation to him, and
his body again seeks its position
of relaxation. When a man is
reading a newspaper and waiting
for his breakfast his legs are al
ways crossed, bnt as soon as tho
breakfast is brought to him he puts
tho paper aside, straightens- out
his legs and goes to work that is,
begins to eat, his mind now turn
ing on the duties of the day bo

The pauper firrures in London
are interesting. The last week in
September showed 92,528 paupers
receiving indoor and outdoor re
lief.' This, out of an enumerated
population in 1881 of 3,S15,C;00,
shows an increase of 2,305 over
the corresponding week in 18S7,
of 4,924 more than in 18SG and
G.609 more than in 1885.

How to Develop the Lungs.
The exercise which I have found
of most value in developing the
lungs may be described as follews:
Standing erect as possible, with
shoulders thrown back find chest
forward, the arms hanging close to
the bod'; the head up with lips
firmly closed, inhalation is to be
taken as slowly as may be; at the-
same time the extended arms are
to be gradually raised, the back of
the hands upward, until they
closely approach each other above
the head. The movement should
be so regulated that tho arms wilt"
be extended directly over the head
at the moment the lungs are com
pletely filled. The position should
be maintained from five to thirty
seconds before the reverse process
is begun. As the arms are grad
ually lowered the breath is exhaled
slowly, so the lungs shall be as
nearly freed from breath as possi
ble at the time the arms again
reach the first position at the side.
By these movements the greatest
expansion possible is reached, for
upon inspiration the weight of the
shoulders and pectoral muscles is
lifted, allowing the thorax to ex
pand fully, while upon exhalation
in lowering the arms we utilize
the additional force of this pressure
upon the upper thoral to render
expiration as complete a? possible.
These deep respirations should be
repeated flye or six times, and the
exercise gono through with several
times a day. It is hardly neces
sary to remark that the clothing
must in no way interfere with the
exercise. In some cases this ex
ercise is tnoYo advantageous when
lying flat on the back instead of
standing. In this position the in
spiratory muscles become rapidly
strengthened by opposing the addi
tional pressure exerted by the ab
dominal organs against the ex
panding lungs. And, on the othpr
hand, expiration is more perfect
and full on account of the pres
sure of these organs. This is an
exercise now advocated by several
leading vocal teachers of Europe.
