w bb Mamm n m tm u- mt gaUi! gtftoww. ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY. KOVEMBEK 10. 18SJ, Get. Habbison, at this early day, is receiving lots of advice as to how he should compose his cabinet Citizens who had sufficient confidence in the general to cast their vote for him for president should now trust in his in telligence to form a cabinet, which will command the respect of this na tion as well as other nations. The oldest enterprise mentioned in history or known to tradition is only just approaching completion. That is the canal through the isthmus of Corinth, in Greece. History tells us that it was first planned 2,500 years ago, and work was actually begun on it under emperor Nero, over seven hundred years ago. When completed it will bo four miles long and deep enough to float the largest vessels that navigate the adjacent seas. The information comes via Cornell university that a New England gen ius recently discovered a cheap meth od of dissolving zinc by combining it with hydrogen and producing a solu tion called zinc water. "This liquid if applied to certain woods, notably white wood, makes it absolutely fire-proof, and at a low cost The invention is kept secret for the present Only one foreigner Sir Lyon Playf air, the En glish scientist knows of it He is said toconfirm all that is claimed for the invention, adding that the inven tor is a bungling chemist, but that he has a faculty of blundering into the choicest secrets in nature's labora tory." Salem's Street Car Enterprise, fSALEM, Nov. 8. The stockholders of the Salem StreetKailway company met at the council chamber this after, noon and elected the following board of directers: T, H. Hubbard, H. W. Cottier, J. H. Albert, 0. B. Moores and E. J. Hendricks. This evening the directors elect held a meeting at the Capital National bank, qualified and completed the organization of the company by the election of the following efficers: President, K. J. Hendricks, editor of the Statesman; vice president, T. H. Hubbard, cap italist; secretary, 0. B. Moores, of the State Insurance company; treasurer, J. H. Albert, cashier Capital National bank. The required amount of cap ital stock has been subscribed and contracts for the work of construc tion and material will be let immedi ately. A Safe Investment. London Police Completely Baffled. Cabinet Slates The Political Amnscmcnt In New York. Washington, Nov. 9. It i3 believed that general Harrison's private secre tary will be D. L. Alexander, now a resident of Buffalo N. Y. Mr. Alex ander possesses all of Col. Lamont's caution and shrewdness, but is less austere and reserved. He is a lawyer and journalist and lived in Iudiun- apolis until a few years ago, when he became fifth auditor of the treasury, wnicu position ho resigned when Cleveland was elected. He has been with Gen. Harrison in a confidential capacity since the opening of the campaign, and has won the latter's esteem and confidence. HEAVY SNOW SIOB1I. Kansas City, Nov. U. The heaviest snow Btorm ever known here at this season of the year, began at three o'olock this morning, and is still raging with unabated severity. The storm is general all over the state. a fatal accident. Pittsburg, Nov. 9. A fall of slate at Willow Grove coal mines this morn ing, crushed to death Jules Leese and an unknown boy. HE JUMPED TOO FAR. PouaHKEEPSiE, N. Y., Nov. 9. Steve Brodie jumped from the bridge in course of construction over the Hud son river here at six oclock this morn ing. He broke three ribs, and when he reached shore blood was running from his mouth and ears. Brodie shortly afterwards took the train for New York where arrived at 9 o'clock. MAKING CABINETS OX SIiVTES. New York. Nov. 9. The main con sideration of importance at present is as to whether Harrison will not call Blaine to the head of his cabinet As to this point there is great diversity of opinion among Bepublicans here. but the almost unanimous wisu ana hope is, that Blaine may bo let se verely alone. Even his admirers say the new administration would have a better chance without Blaine than with him. Fully a dozen cabinet slates have been promulgated here to day, and taken together, they contain nearly every Bepublioan name of any prominonce in the country. Perhaps only one of the names is certain to be found in the final list, and thai is the name of Col. Jno. O. Now, of Indian apolis, who is regarded as the coming secretary of the treasury. Almost without a doubt Gen. Harrison will put some Indiana man in the cabinet, and Col. New is the first, and only man anyone thinks of. His loug and large experience in the treasury sug gests the appropriateness of placing him at the head of that department John Sherman is almost everywhere mentioned as secretary of state. the IiOndon hoebou. London, Nov. 9. The murder fiend has added another to his list of vic tims. At 11 o'clock this morning the body of a woman cnt into pieces was discovered in a house on Dorset street, Spitalfields. The police are endeavoring 'to trace the murderer with bloodhounds. The remains were mutilated in the same horrible manner as those of the women mur dered in Whitechapel. The appear ance of the remains is ingu ttui, and mutilation wa3 even greater than in the previous cases. The head had been severed from the body and placed beneath one of the arms. The ears and nose cut off, the body dis emboweled and tho flesh torn from the thighs. The womb and other or gans wero missing. Tlje skin had been torn off the head and cheeks; one of the hands had been pushed into the stomach. This victim, like all the others, was a prostitute. She was married, and her husband was a porter. They lived together at spas modic intervals. Her name is be lieved to have been Lizzie Fisher, but to most of tho habitues of the hauuts she visited she was known as Mary Jape. She had a room in tho house where she was murdered and she carried a latch key, and no one knows at what hour she entered the house last night Probably no one saw the man who accompanied her, therefore it is hardly likely that he will ever be identified. Ho might easily have left the house between one and six o'clock this morning without attracting attention. Doc tors who have examine! the remains refuse to make any statement until an inquest is held. Three blood hounds belonging to privato citizens were taken to the place where the body lay and placed on the scent of the murderer, but were unable to keep it for any great distance, and all hope of running tho assassin do-vn with their assistance will have to be abandoned. I haven't the courage to die, sir, Hardly the corage to live ; Can't drink enough, to forget sir. Ain't Chritian enough to forgive. This was the -wail of a man who had endured the tortures of "liver com plaint" and dyspepsia for years ; and he might haveondured them for life, had he not heard that Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery would make him a well man. He gave it a trial and was cured. Once he was hollow-eyed, ema ciated, and slowly tottering toward the temb: but now he is vigorous, robust and healthy. There is nothing that can compare with tho Discovery" as a curative agent for sour stomach, Impure blood and biliousness. Tho worst cases of chronic Nasal Catarrh positively and permanently cured by Dr. Sage's Catarrh Remedy.
