The Value Of Eeputation.
Reputation is the opinion of the
world about a man. Character is
the fact itself, but reputation is
what we fhink about that fact.
Reputation thus becomes a factor
in the business world, and has a
money value which can be in
creased or lost.
Judicious advertising is a help.
No storekeeper who depends upon
simple, fair dealing atone ran
make a very great or sudden suc
cess. He is an honest a man, but
the people do not know it. Hence,
he must use all legitimate means to
acquaint them with that fact. If
he is a judge ot the articles of his
trade, so that his customers can
rely upon his selections, he must
convince customers of his sqperior
knowledge before it will net him a
return. But once his reputation
is established, built up by slow
degrees, so "that his neighbors one
by one yield their judgment to the
growing opinion of our retailer's
abilities then this neighborhood or
state opinion becomes a valuable'
jroperty, as much so as a house or
ot. This is so true that a-mere
label is often enough to secure for
the goods it covers a much higher
price than for other articles possi
bly of as good, or it may be of
even better quality. Grocers and
consumers can better afford the
higher price with the implied war
rant of its reputation, than accept
another brand at less price, but
upon which a lack of reputation
casts a doubt.
Thus a reputation is worth striv
ing for, and when aohieved, is the
foundation for prosperity. It is
one of the rewards offered by the
world for hard work and continued
fair dealing, which even from a
money point of view are seen to
pay. Let no retailer get discour
aged because trade increases but
slowly. Everything valuable costs
effort and time, and the Tesult is
woitb all it costs. A. fine reputa
tion once established is honorable
to a merchant and brings too, its
pecuniary rewards.
The secret of success istwo-fold
first, a foundation of good quali
ties upon which a good reputation
can be built, and second, the using
of all legitimate and persistent
means to extend tho knowledge of
such good qualities as far as pos
sible. DO NOT SCTFER AST 10XCEK.
Tired feeling, dull headache, pains in
various parts of tho body, sinking at
the pit of tho stomach, loss of appetite,
feverishness, pimples or sores, are all
positive evidence of poisoned blood.
No matter how it became poisoned it
must be. purified to avoid death. Acker's
English Blood Elixir has never failed to
remove scrofulous or 'syphilitic poisons.
Sold under positive guarantee by J.W.
Conn, Druggist
In ono of our New England
towns one small boy met another
by the roadside whom ho saw eat
ing something taken from his pock
et. The following was the con cen con
versateon: "What yer eatin'?"
"Plums." "Where d'yer git 'em?"
"Down here." "Where, -ofFm
Smith's tree?" "No, picked 'em
up ofFm er ground." "Did yer
ask him 'fyer might have 'm?"
"Didn't this time, but I did th' other
time." "Don't yer know it's steal
in'?" "No." "Well, 'tis. If yer
don't ask 'im every "time it's just
the same as stealin'." (After short
pause) "Gim'me one."
rAKE.NTS CftnilXAIXY LIABLE,
More than half of all deaths occur
before six years of ace. An army of in
nocent, lovely children are swept need
lessly away each year. Parents are
criminally responsible for this. The
death rate of children in England is less
than half this. Acker's English Baby
Soother lias done more to bring this
about than all other causes combined.
i ou cannot afford to bo without it.
