Mas. Clevelahd is worth half a
million and the president a quarter of
a million. It is said that in case the
president is defeated next month
they will spend quite a while travel
ing ahroad and then settle down to
live in New York.
Leavexworth seems to be a place
where they take life easy. There is a
paper there called the Sun, and the
editor of the Sun asked a debtor for
some money. It was refused and the
Sun man pulled out his little knife
and slashed his debtor's throat That
is a new way to collect newspaper
debts, but it makes a mess on the
pavement, and is obviously objection
able. It is believed that there is more
fighting among the Hungarian miners
in the Pennsylvania coal fields every
year than there is between the United
States army and the Indians. If this
be true, wouldn't it be a good idea to
move the Hungarians out to the res
ervations where they could amuse the
Indians and the Indians could make
it pleasant for the Hungarians? This
would give the army a little holiday
at the same time, and everybody
would be pleased.
An enthusiastic prohibitionist was
green enough the other day to try to
tie bishop Foss of the Methodist
church to the third party's chariot
wheels. For an hour he plied him
with the stock arguments of his fac
tion and finally demanded, by way of
"putting on de rousements:" "Now,
bishop, if you saw a mad kdog in the
street, snapping at everybody in his
path and dooming them to a horrible
death, what would you do? "Would
you try to restrain him and capture
him alive? Or would you not rather
shoot him dead?" "Well," said Dr.
Foss, meditatively, but with conclu
sive firmness, "if I had been blazing
away at him for thirty years without
hittine him. I don't know but what
Td try the other plan."

settlements they are well-to-do farm
ers, living in good substantial houses
and owninc lareo herds of cattle. It
is said that you can travel three hun
dred miles through Wisconsin, from
Lacrosse into southern Minnesota and
northern Iowa, from one Scandinavian
farm to another. The magnificence
of opportunity that presents itself in
our country to the Scandinavian
fnlly appreciated.
What, asks the Marine Journal,
would ten millions a year be to this
country if given by congress to help
build up our commercial marine? It
would more than return tho eqniv.dent
in custom dues. It would more than
pay if we could retain in the United
"States twenty out of one hundred and
fifty millions which are yearly carried
out of the country for freights with
out benefits to our citizens. Why
should not American commerce be al
lowed the same opportunities that are
afforded the other industries of the
country, which have reached a devel
opment such as the most far seeing
never dreamed of ? We are not tied
down by foreign subsidized compet
itors on land, and therefore our pro
gress has been marvelous, and so it
would be upon the ocean if the bonds
were once cut which confine our ship
builders. The illiteracy of criminals is illus
trated by Dr. Scouller, of tho Hlinois
reform school, thus: l"While the state
of Illinois has less than 6 per cent
unable to read and-write, the commit
ments to the reform school show near
ly 25 per cent, unable to read and 70
per cent unable to write. "What is
your nationality?" wo asked of a
young man nearly six feet high.
"Don't know." "Are you an Ameri
can?" "Eh?" "Were you born in
America?" "No. I was born in Shel
byville, HI." The criminal, is above
all, selfish and egotistical. He knows
it all He is incapable of being
taught Smartness is his curse. He
is ever ready to sneer at others.
Bragging is ;his unconquerable pro
pensity. Ho commits crime because
he is proud of it Which suggests
that the habit of ignorant egotism in
parents tends to breed in children a
criminal conceit and tendency to do
whatever will make them notorious."
The annual report of Gov. Semple,
of Washington territory, is very long
and comprehensive. He says ho has
no expense account, and had to rely
on the public spirited citizens. The
population is 167,9S2, an increase of
about 24.0CD the past year. The taxa
ble property is valued at 884,C21,182,
being an increase of 65,000,000 in ten
years. The financial condition of the
territory is most prosperous, and al
though the penitentiary and other
buildings have been erected the past
year the treasury is but a little be
hind. Nearly 600,000 acres of land
have been entered by settlers during
the past year. During the year indi
vidual owners and railroads have sold
over 1,000,000 acres, and much more
would have been settled had it been
surveyed. There are 1,197 miles of
railroad now there, and moro in the
course of construction. All the in
dustries from cattle raising to mining
are in a most prosperous state, and
employes get good wages.

Wood unmanufactured, and wives who
have been divorced from their husbands
are exempted from further duty.
The duty is taken off beeswax, though
bees themselves will continue to be pro
tected as usual, by their stingers.
Steel sheets come in free, thouch if you
steal sheets off the line and are caught at
it a tax will be imposed. Washerwomen
who iron sheets are clamoring for a tariff
on Chinese importations, which they
ought to have.
There is no duty on plaster of Pans
when you wear the plaster for a weak
back, or wear it for two weeks back,
either.
Castor oil paya forty cents a gallon,
though you may have to pay your boy a
dollar for every spoonful be takes.
Bioarbonate of soda pays three-fourths
of one cent a pound, which will not make
mncn Qlnerence, except ior inoso wuo
are compelled to bicarbonate in large
quantities.
Many medical preparations pay twenty
per centum ad valorem. You may rely
on the druggiet to ad valorem should the
custom house neglect to do so, and you
will be lucky if he doesn't add 200 per
cent, besides.

Emancipation Proclamation will come in
free under the provisions of the Mills
Bill.
Mustard comes in at six cents a pound.
It will receive honorable mention when
mustard out, according to its strength
and services.
Tramrjs and anarchists will be inter
ested to know that soap is on the free
list.
Bags come in free, but the foreign
paupers who come in them will havo to
settle with the Castle Garden ring.
There is no duty on vegetables m their
natural state, whether that state be Mas
sachusetts or Texas.
Needles come in free rather too free
considering the number of women who
have made pin-cushiugs of themselves.
A tax on the needles that are at this mo
ment meandering about in human flesh
trying to find an outlet, would produce
considerable revenue in itself.
Manufacturers of pure ground coffee
will be interested to know that there is
no duty on chicory or dandelion root.
The tax on razors will be thirty-flvo per
cent., notwithstanding the efforts of our
barbers to shave it down.
Baw human hair cornea duty free, but
when it is cooked with hash it will tax a
man severely.
Lead in pigs, lead in bars and led by
the nose, two and one-fourth cents per
pound.
Hollow ware, inoluding telephones, two
and one-half cents per pound. You can
import a hollow cough for nothing.
Dogs cannot be imported free. What
the charge is per pound depends on where
the pound is located.
Dates are free, so that a woman past
thirty can tell the date of her birth or
not, jest as Bhe pleases.
Dyeing material, except doctors' drugs,
free.
You don't have to nnti money when you
import antimony.
Walking sticks can be brought from the
other side for twenty per cent. Sticks
who carry them come in free.
Tho duty on brooms is twenty per cent..
and hen-pecked husbands will wish it
was advanced to a point that was pro
hibitory. A foreign blanket must pay forty per

Wives are disposed to complain be
cause "hubs" are free.
German lookinc-class plate is duty free,
German looking lasses will bo glad of
this.
Paris green, twelve and one-half per
cent., though if you go to Pari3 green it
will cost you more than that beforo you
got away.
If you are protected by a foreign um
brella it will be thirty per cent.
Lead pigs two and one-fourth per cent.,
though a man who has ever led pigs
would consider that altogether too low,
Copper clippings, one cent a pound.
Newspaper clippings are gauged by tho
price of old paper.
! Watches, twenty-five per cent., except
the Watch on tne iimne, which couldn't
be imported at any price.
Little boys are expected to kick because
shingles are on the free list.
Beady-made clothing pays forty-five
percent. This won't make any difference
to the man who cheats the tailor.
Paper hangings, twenty-five per cent.
But there won't be any hangings in New
York after this year, not even on paper.
Tar is free, and in sections where lynch
law prevails feathers will be thrown in
free, also.

building in Oregon in the next few
