What an Old Stager Has to Say About
Them.
To us old-timers on the road
nothing is so amusing as the
"chippy" drummer. We can al
ways tell him at sight. He may
look as fly as a thoroughbred, but
his baggage gives him away. Be
comes on his first trip with a trunk
full of clothing, and when he gets
on a car he is loaded down worse
than an old maid who is going
sixty miles. He is sure to have
two valises and a satchel with a
strap hanging from his shoulder.
A hat box, two canes (one for
every day wear and the otherfor
Sunday), an umbrella, three rail
way guides, a half dozen Rand &
McNally state maps, a silk travel
ing bag, a new novel, a pair of
slippers, a rubber coat, a mohair
duster, a flask and a pipe, are a
few of the things which he sur
rounds himself with. We kno?
him because he kicks at every
thing. The road Is rough or
crooked, or the time is slow. He
notifies the conductor of the Pull
man before he leaves the depot of
bis intention to report him. He
discourses for an hour upon the
extortion of the baggage master.
When he gets off at a station he
refuses to pay fifty cents to the
omnibus man and walks to the
hotel, and swears later when re
quired to pay a drayman seventy
five cents lor hanling his baggage
from the depot. He asks for the
best room in the hotel and does
not get it. Meet that same fel
low four years later and he has
dropped all his valises except one
small one, and he no- longer trav
els with canes, umbrellas, slippers,
railway guides, maps, rubber coat
and all that. One side of his
valise will contain his samples,
and all the clothing he will need
for a two months' trip on the other
side. He carries two suits of
under olothing, two white shirts
and a change of socks. When
the train is sidetracked while the
road is being cleared of a freight
wreck, he takes a nap. Wrhen he
goes into a hotel the clerk recog
nizes him as one of the boys and
gives him the best the house
affords, and then he takes a hand
in having fun with the "chippies"
himself. Chicago Drummer in
Globe-Democrat.
Children
Often need some safe cathartic and ton
ic sicknessor to relieve colic, headache,
sickstomach.lndigestion.dysenteryand
the complaints incidental to chidnood.
Let the children take Simmons Liver
Regulator and keep well. It is purely
vegetable, not unpleasant to the taste
and safe to take alone or in connection
with other medicine.
A Picturesque Georgia Lie.
The story is told by a resident
near Rocky Ford that while the
recent flood was at the highest
point in the Ogeechee he was nav
igated around in a batteau looking
after some hogs he had in the
swamp. His attention was attract
edto the peculiar actions of a man,
who was seen to climb upon a
fence, the top of which was just
peeping out of the water, and then
dive again, repeating this time and
again. On approaching nearer he
discovered that it was one of his
neighbors, that worthy old gentle
man, Mr. Henry Brigdon. He
would dive off the fence, and for
twenty yards the bubbles would
rise to the top of the water as
though a huge alligator was mak
ing his way along the bottom, and
then he "would rise and swim back
deposit something in a sack fast
ened to the fence. On inquiry he
found that old friend Brigdon was
picking cottonr having ajfield ot it
there completely hid by the Hood
Sylvania Telephone.

A little negro boy thirteen years
old has been preaching before
crowds in Perry county, Ga., and
astonishing every one with his elo
quence and his knowledge of the
Scriptures. Frequently an audi
ence of 1,500 people has listened
to his discourses and wondered at
the maturity of thought shown in
his sermons.
"Our blacks," said Mrs. J. R.
Reid, a native of New South
Wales, "are different in type from
the African. Their hair stands up
wiry and bushy, like that of the
Circassian women in your dime
museums. In the bush they wear
no clothes, but when they come in
town the authorities compel them
to be clad. The women object
strenuously to clothing. If you
give a woman a gown she will sel
dom put but one arm in a sleeve,
letting the garment hang from her
shoulders and displaying one side
of her bosom. The blacks find an
abundance of food, and there is
thus no incentive fo'r them to" ac
cept civilization and -learn to
work. The country swarms with
kangaroos, walvarbies (an animal
similar to the kansraroo), rabbits
and birds. Then the blacks make
a large part of their diet of snakes
and, worms. Worms they eat
raw, just as they dig them from
the earth. .They eat snakes of all
kinds.
"The blacks are not prolific, a
couple seldom having three chil
dren. The ,women, rf course, are
brutally abused.fcy the males, and
kept in the most dfgjjMJed state of
servitude. When a bllSk wants a
wife he falls upjma young woman,
chokes her so sbp qJonot cry out,
and runs with'begmto the brush.
There he must stay with her for
three or four months. He cannot
return to his own tribe till the ex
piration of this period. When he
does take her back, if she utters
no complaint of hunger against
him that is, if she does not show
that he has utterly failed to supply
her with sufficient worms, kanga
roo meat and snakes he can keep
her. But for a year he must stay
out of the way of her tribe, for if
they catch him they will kill him
and take the young woman back.
The vsign of the married state
adopted"b"ythe woman is the pull
ing out of one front tooth. When
the male becomes a Benedict he
indicates the joyful fact by cutting
off the little finger of 'his right
hand at the first joint. They live
in low skin covered huts, and I
think in every respect are beneath
the North American Indian in in
telligence." Children Cry tor Pitcher's Castoria

W. B. Bradford, agent for eight
years among the Piutes and
Apaches in New Mexico, is a firm
believer in the doctrine that "the
only good Indian is a dead Indian."
He thinks it useless to spend
money on them for education.

eastern schools more full of the
devil than ever, and it is not long
before they are as degraded as
