A PATHETIC BOEDER PUBERAL- It was a touching sight to see how the boys stood around the dead body of Briggs and endeav ored to hide their emotion and failed. The tears ran down the face of Arkansaw Bob like rain off the gable and of a corn-crib, and Ted Williams and Jim Henderson and several more bowed their heads, while their forms shook with sobs they would not allow to es cape. The boys dug a grave on the banks of the Brazos river, and that night as the clouds drifted away and the moonlight fell upon the snow-covered ground and sparkled the ice laden limbs of the forest trees, we laid poor Briggs down in his narrow resting place. The only requiem that was sung was the roar of the turbid Brazos as it surged along on its way to the sea a mass sung by nature. When the grave had been filled Jim Henderson said: "I think we ought to have some kind of service. It ain't right, by a darn sight, to go away without sayin' somethin' over the grave any you fellows got a Bible?" No one had a Bible, nor had any one seen one in a number of years. "Well, suppose some one says a sort of prayer?" The boys scratched their heads, glanced at one another for a moment, and then looked away off into the woods. Finally some one whispered, "Sish! Arkansaw Bob's goin' to pray," and he did. "0 Lord," he said, "I guess in your opinion I'm pretty tough, but! ain't askin' nuthin for my self its for Briggs. He is dead now, but was as white a man as ever walked. He never did no man a hurt, and he" had a heart in him as big as a mule, and no one as I've heard ever said a word agin him. I don't kuow as what I say will have much influence, but Briggs stood well with us down here, and although I don't know much about his career, or his history,, or his family, he was a man you could bank on every clatter, ne gave a sick Mexican $4.50 once for medicine, and then turned right round and nursed him through a fever, but the in fernal Greaser hadn't been well more'n two days before he stole Briggs' saddlebags. Ah! Lord, there ain't any preacher nowhere 'round here, or we'd had him to say something more p'inted to you than I can say it. I never pottered any with the Bible, and can't just now remember a hymn song, but I'm a man of my word I mean what I say and Briggs, if he gets a chance, will make as good a rec ord in heaven as any one who ever got there. He had away down in his heart, something that was square and as true as steel, and, O Lord! you-musn'tgo back on that kind of a man, 'cause they're too skeerce in these parts. Amen." The prayer was as rough as Bob, but no more sincere, as was evidenced by his tearful eye and trembling lip. After the prayer the boys ranged themselves on one side of the grave, and, drawing their six-shooters., fired a salute over their dead comrade, and while the sharp reports were still echoing througt- the forest they turned and left the scene. Sore Throat Is particularly favorable to the contrac tion of Diphtheria. Heed the warning, and use Daruys Prophylactic Fluid. It at once allays the inflammation of the throat, subdues the pain and gives per manent relief. It promptly and effectu ally destroys all contagion and diphthe ritic germs. It Is a safeguard against Diphtheria, and should be used on the first symptoms of sore throat as a gargle. Do not forget to take care of the tools and farm machinery as you cease to use them for the sea son. They represent money and you can not afford to let them be ruined for want of care. J. W. Conn, Druggist. A Pew Figures. New York, Oct. 23. Joel Er hardt, the Republican candidate for mayor ot New York, spent two hours at his headquarters figuring on the election. These are his de de ducteons: At the election of 1886 for may or the vote was as follews: Hew itt, 90,552; George, 68,110; Roose velt, 60,435. Total, 219,097. The vote of the Republican can didate on the state ticket, Daniels vs. Peckham, for the court ot ap peals in 1886 was 78,986, showing that 18,551 Republicans voted for Hewitt fearing the election of George, to show that Roosevelt would have been elected if he had received the full Republican vote. Deduct from Hewitt's vote 18,551 for the Republican votes he re ceived and add them to Roosevelt, it would have resulted as follews: United Democratic vote for Hew itt, 72,001; Labor vote for George, 68,110; Republican vote, if it all had been polled, for Roosevelt, YS.ySli. Total, 219,097. The lie publican plurality would have been 6985. Add to the vote of 1886 for ad ditional registration this year, 18 per cent, the vote would stand as follows, dividing the increase and gains between each party propor prepor proper tionately: County Democracy, La bor and Tammany, 165,330; Re publican, 93,204; total, 258,534. Estimate the division of this vote as follows : Coogan, 30,000; Hew itt, 45 per cent, of the balance 60, 898; Grant 55 per cent, of the bal ance, 74,432; Erhardt, 93,504; total, 25S.534. On this basis Er hardt would have a plurality of 18,772. in addition to this Erhardt thinks 20,000 votes may be relied upon from independent Democrats and laborers, who are utterly op posed to the rule of Tammany hall. A couple spent their honeymoon at Bar Harbor. They met first on a steamer on the Atlantic ocean; he proposed in .Sweden; was ac cepted in Russia; obtained her father's permission in Enn-land: the marriage settlements were arawn un in tnis eeuntrv: tnev were married in Algiers, and good-1 ness knows where they are now and will bo to-morrow. - " Children Cry for Pitcher's -Castoria When Baby was sick, we gave her Castoria. Journalism, as a profession, is a creation of the last half century; as a great profession, it is no older than the telegraph. But to-day it is the supreme power of the world. Fifty yeats ago the orators ruled America; to-day it is ruled by the editors. This sway will become far more absolute than any of us can realize. See what has already been done. We have put a news paper into the hands of every man who can read in the United States. For a mere trifle the news of the whole world is spread out before him day after day. Can any other human agency do as much? "What is the ambition of the orator now? Not to make bis speeches but to get them published. Mr. Conk ling and Mr. Evarts cared very little for the andiences their voices reached, for behind the few people there they beheld the millions of readers of the daily press.
