On the bank of the Octoraro creek at White Bock, Lancaster county, stands a large hollow tree. Ed Platz, trackman on the Peach Bottom Narrow Guage railroad, is only 19 years old, but he is seven feet high. He loves to fish, and does whenever he gets the chance. The other day he got into a canoe which was chained to the big hol low tree, and was soon absorbed in his favorite sport. Ho had fished a short time when he heard a loud but musical sound behind him. Looking around, he saw a large black ball emerging from the hollow in the tree. The ball moved swiftly forward, and, with out ado, settled on the Octoraro giant's head. He knew then that he had been selected by a swarm of bees to hive on, and he slid out of the canoe into the water. The creek was not deep enough for a dive, so the giant had to hold hitn self beneath the water by the bot tom. The bees did not go down with him, but when he was finally forced to raise his head to the sur face to get wind he found a snug bunch of bees waiting for him and he had to go down again. He crawled along the bottom until he had to have more wind, and he stuck his head ont again, The bunch of bees were saunter ing by, and seeing the head, dip ped at it again. Down to the bottom went the giant again, and dragged himself along the bottom until he had to have breath or die, and he lifted his head once more. The bunch of bees was gone, and the Octoraro giant came out on shore. After he had breathed enough he went to the hollow tree and found a store of honey there, so large that two patent pails were required to carry it home. Southern Antidote -For Malaria: It is Generally known that Simmons Liver Regulator is relied upon to secure immunity from all malarial disorders. Tnls is proven by its popularity, and anyone who has lived in the south has seen its curative effects and the protec tion it gives against this weakening and dangerous malady. It acts more promptly than calomel or quinine, with out any of their injurious consequences. Wasn't so Fat After All. Now another question is im ported into this canvass, and that is, whether the Democratic party is in favor of free trade or "ag'in it." Their attitude on this Ques tion before and since the Oregon election reminds one of the storv of the man who went to a tanner to sell a dog's skin and by way of enhancing its value told the tanner that the dog whose skin he offered was the d dest fattest dog that ever was killed; "but," said, the' tanner, "we don't buy the skins of fat doers, thev don't mslte frond leather." "Well," said the seller, ruminating for a moment Tipon his blunder, "he was not "so d d fat after all." So the Democratic party camot out before our state election with drums beating and banners flying in favor of free iraae, out alter the election they were not so very much for free trade after all. From Son. Geo. S, 'Williams' speech at the Port land Republican Demonstration, Oct. 12. Liberated from Their Fetters By the helpful, genial action of that most beneficent of aperients, Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, the bowels soon throw off the burden that paralyzed and weakened them, and re sume their normal freedom of action. The action of the Bitters, unlike that of average purgatives, involves no griping ordrenchlng. It It did It would, like them, be valueless fnr ordinary use. There is nothing ungentle or uunaiunu aueuuing lis operation, upon me liver, no less than the bowels. Its action Is most benign, promoting a healthful bilious secretion, and directing out of the wrong and into the right channel. Conjointly with costlveness. other bilious symptoms disap pear when it Is systematically used, and the stomach Is strengthened as well as regulated by It. Malailal complaints, rheumatism, de bility, nervousness and kidney troubles are completely relieved by It. Sleep and appe tite are Invariably promoted by It. Arthur Quill, in Denver JNeios, says. Cowboy wages are not now nearly as good as they were in early days. Formerly a good hand would get $50 a month and board, while a new hand would get 35 to $40. Now top wages are from $30 to $35, and new hands from $20 to $25. The days for raising cattle on the same extensive scale as formerly are drawing to a close, consequent on the settling up of the country. The bulk of the cat tle in northwestern Texas to-day is held in large pastures, and the same will be the case all over the range country before long. Sak Feancisco, Oct. 13. Charles E. Beach was this after noon found guilty of subornation of perjury in the United States district court. Beach is a heavy land owner of Humbolt county, and for a number of years previ ous to March, 1888, he is alleged to have paid men in that county $50 each for swearing on govern ment timber land, under pretense that they were going to live on said land, but really for the pur pose of surrendering their right to him, by which means, it is claimed, he has come, into possession of large amount of valuable timber land. Judge Hoffman ordered Beach to appear for sentence No vember 12th. CAEELESS MOTHEKS. Many mothers have permitted their chidren to die before their eyes when they might have been saed. Greenberg.of the Russian steamer Alexander IT, which arrived to day from Petropaulovski, Siberia, reports the siezure of the British schooner Aurana for illegal seal ing by a Russian war vessel. We hold positive proof that Acker's English Blood Elixir cures' all blood poisons where cheap sarsaparillas and so-called purifiers fail. Knowing this, we will sell it to all who call at our store on a positive guarantee. J. V. Conn, Druggist. Bumor Officially Denied. San Fbancisco, Oct. 12. CoU onel J. M. Donahue, who has just returned from the east, denies that the San Francisco & North Pacific Coast railroad has been sold to the Union Pacific, as has been frequently rumored since his departure. He says bonds have been floated to aid in the comple tion of the road into Mendocino county. UaSPEPSIA, DESFAIK, UEATK. These are the actual steps which fol low indigestion. Acker's English l)js pepsia Tablets wili both check and cure this most fearful of diseases. Guaran teed by J. W. Conn, Druggist. General Schofield will remove to "Washington in a few weeks, and he will probably take up his quarters at the Ebbitt house. He gets no increase whatever of pay or allowances, and the actual salary of $7,500 hardly allows the head of the army to live as he would be obliged to do if he kept house and entertained. HOW DOCTORS CONQUER DEATH. Doctor Walter K. Hammond says : "Af ter a long experience I have come to the conclusion that two-thirds of all deaths from coughs, pneumonia and consumption, might be avoided if Ack er's English Cough Iteniedy were only carefully used in time." This wonder ful Remedy is sold under a posit ne guarantee by J. W. Conn, Druggist. The reports of the Hydrographic bureau at Washington declare that the sailing tonnage of the world is nearly double that of steam, and that this relative proportion is likely to be maintained. UETTER THAN BLOODY BATTLES. General Wheatcroft Nelson, sajs:'ily experience in the English array as well as in America, convinces methatnofA tng so thoroughly puriGess the blood or adds to health, vigor and life as Ack er's English Blood Elixir." This great Ilemedyis sold underapositne guar antee by J. W. Conn, Druggist The British empire continues to increase. A farmer at Hood river shipped sixty sacks of potatoes weighing about 100 pounds each to this city a few days ago. The potatoes sold here for forty cents per hun dred pounds, the top price. The freight was thirty cents per hun dred, the drayage two cents and commission two cents, which with six cents for the sacks, consumed the entire proceeds of the sale, leaving the farmer not a cent for his seed, the labor of plantiner, cul tivating, harvesting and shipping which, as any one knows who has hoed, dug and picked up potatoes is no trifling matter. This is not right, and whether the wrong is in the railway company charging $-18 per ton for freight, or in the pota toes bringing such a low price is what is puzzling the poor farmer. It is pretty tough to work all sum mer and after sending one's crop to market not get a cent for it and have no potatoes either. Oregonian. Sweet Oil in Scarlet Pever. A physician tells of a simple and effectual treatment for scarlet fe ver. It is the application to the whole body of warm sweet oil, well rubbed in. He says: "There is something curious in its imme diate good effect. Almost twenty years ago I had five patients in one family sick with the anginos'e or throat variety of scarlet fever, and had them all brought into one room for convenience sake and seclusion. Five little heads re turned my greeting every time a visit was made, and all .clamored loudly for the oil bath. It was plentifully used, then a woolen nightgown put on, and nothing else done. No medicine was giv en, and but little food was needed to supplement absorbed oilT And in recovery-there was an absence oT usual complications, so that in my western town oil baths came to be used with excellent re sult." Its superior excellence Droven in millions oi homes lor more than a quarter of a cent ury. It is used by the United States Gov ernment.
