The Brain Should Best While The Stomach Digests The Pood There is a widespread supersti tion, cherished by the great ma jority of the people, that to sleep immediately after they have taken food is to endanger health, to favor the onset of apoplexy, etc., a su perstition based on the assumption that during sleep the brain is nor mally congested. There is, no doubt, such a thing as congestive sleep, but during normal sleep the brain is anaemic. When a person has taken a fairly abundant lunch or dinner the stomach demands a special influx of blood wherewith to accomplish its work of diges tion ;.zr organ can more easily comply with that demand than the brain, which, when in full activity, is suffused with a maximum amount of the vital fluid- But a derivation of blood from the brain to the stomach can only take pMace, except in exceptionally full blooded and vigorous persons, on the condition that the cerebral functions be meanwhile partially or wholly suspended. Hence many people after taking dinner feel indisposed for mental action and not a few long for sleep. The already partially anremic brain would fain yield up to the stomach a still further supply of blood, and yield itself up to refreshing sleep. Doing so it gains new strength; meanwhile digestion proceeds en ergetically, and soon body and mind are again equipped to con tinue in full force the battle of life. But superstition the child ot ignor ance, intervenes, declares that sleep during digestion is danger ous, admonishes the would-be sleepers to struggle against their perilous iuclinafion, and, though telling them that after dinner they may sit awhile, assures them of the adage, "After supper walk a mile." The millions of its victims con tinue, therefore, the strife to which it condemns them and ignore the suggestions offered to them by the lower animals, who have always practiced the lessons of sound physiology by sleeping after feed ing whenever they are allowed to do so. Hence the human brain and human stomach of such vic tims contend with each other during the digestive process. The brain, impelled by superstition, strives to work and demand blood to work with, while the stomach stimulated by its contents strives to carry on its marvelous chemis try demands an ample suppy of blood for the purpose. The result of the struggle is that neither is able to do its work well. The brain is enfeebled by being denied its natural rest during the digest ive process, and the healthy func tion of the stomach degenerates into dyspepsia. Westminster Re view. Mr. W. A. Eldridge, agent of the Red Star line steamers, has a bright little son named Bruce. Some time since Master Bruce took a fancy for a drum, and Mr. El dridge, to gratify the little fellow, purchased one for him. Mrs. El dridge is exceedingly fond of music, but the thumping of the drum in the house was a kind of music that was too rugged for her. She induced Bruce to go into the yard, where he might beat the drum to his heart's content. Bruce donned a wide-awake cap three sizes too large and a red oilcloth cape, and soon the rub a-dub-dub was going on cheerily. Thinking Bruce was perfectly safe and hav ing a royal good time, Mrs. El dridge directed her attention to household duties. After a while she listened for the. sound of the drum, but the noise had ceased. Mrs. Eldridge then hastened to the yard, where she found the gate open and Bruce and his drum gone. She was greatly frightened and sent messengers out to find her boy, but they returned without him. Mr. Eldridge was absent, but Mrs. Eldridge had a diligent search kept up. She had almost despaired of seeing Bruce again, but late in the afternoon the little daughter of a friend brought the young drummer home and he was as happy as as a bird. The little girl said that Bruce had come to their home with a tramp and after beating the drum entered the house and held out his hat for a penny. The tramp, see ing that Bruce was recognized, made a hasty retreat. ""Where were you, Bruce?" asked Mrs. Eldridge. "Playing monkey," said he. "Playing monkey?" " Yes, I'd beat the drum and then do like the monkev with the organ grinders take off my hat and ask for pennies." "And what would you do with the money?" "Give it to the man; that's the way the monkey does." "Well,"remarked Mrs. Eldridge, "the next time I let you go to drum in the yard I shall sec to it that you do notgoon a monkey advpn ture with a tramp." "I ho tramp who had coaxed Bruce away reaped a rich harvest of pennies by the help of the drummer with the wide-awake cap and flaming red cape Toledo Blade. PRICE BAKING POWDER CO., NEW YORK. CHICAGO. ST. LOUIS. ,UU- WEIGHT CSEAM Baking Alvin Olark Says He Hopes to Make a Pive-p6ot liens. Boston, Oct. 8. A letter has been received here by Alvin Clark, manufacturer of the great Lick telescope in California, from the president of the university of southern California, at Los Ange les, asking for information as to a forty-inch lens and intimating that an order for a tele3copeto eclipse the Lick observatory would soon be sent -' iAJU "Clark, 'when asked if he could make a lens four inches larger than the Lick telescope, said: "Certainly I can, if I can get glass of the proper size. There will be no trouble lif making a lens forty inches in diameter. I will make a five-footer if my life is spared long enough. But it would take about one man's lifetime to make such a lens. Its increased magnifying power would be in proportion to its in creased size." This forty -inch lens would be one-ninth larger than the Lick observatory lens and would make objects appear nine times larger. If a lens five feet in diam eter is secured it will bring the moon so close that we can see ev ery cranny on its surface. ' It would revolutionize astronomical researches. , "I have received no less than three letters from different colleges asking if I could make a forty-inch lens. I have written to all those persons that I was ready to accept any and all orders for a forty-inch lens. A larger telescope would cost a good deal moro than that at the Lick observatory on account of greater risk. The Lick tele scope cost $100,000, and the lenses alone cost 857,000. A forty-inch telescope, I should say at a rough guess, would cost between 400, 000 -'and? $500,000. A million would be a small figure for a five foot lens."
