CHIEF JUSTICE FULLER.
Coremony of Administering The Oath
Yesterday.
The
Street Car Trouble In Chicaso
Mormons in Mexico.
Washington, Oct. a Chief justice
Fuller took the oath of office and as
sumed the active duties of his posi
tion to-day. An hour before tho time
for opening the courts, the narrow
space allotted to the general public
in the conrt chamber, was crowded
by men and women. Among people
of note present was jndge Thnrman,
who was conducted to a seat within
tho space reserved for the marshal,
and who became the conspicuous cen
ter of attraction daring the half-hour
preceding the entry of the justices.
The chief justice arrived. at the capi-
ioi at nan-past eleven, and proceeded
to his jrivate office in the court room,
where ho took the oath of allegiance
in presence of the associate justices,
the oath being administered by the
senior member of the court, associate
justice Miller. At 12 o'clock, the as
sociate justices entered tho room in
procession, justices Gray and Mat
thews being absent As usual, the chief
justice was also wearing the robe of
omce. no was escorted to a place at
the clerk's desk and the clerk read
his commission, after which jndge
Fuller arose and holding a Bible in
one hand read from manuscript the
oath of office as follews:
"I Mellville Weston Fuller do sol
emnly swear or affirm that I will ad
minister justice without respect to
any person and do equal right to poor
and to rich, and that I will faithfully
and impartially, discharge and per
form, all duties incumbent on mo as
chief justice of tho United States, ac
cording to the best of my abilities
and understanding, agreenbly to tho
constitution and law of the United
States. So help mo God."
His voice was clear, and his enun
ciation firm and distinct at the begin
ning, but before the end was reached,
a marked tremor was manifest Tho
chief justice was now escorted to be
hind the bar. and to his official seat
in the center. Again tho court and
the assemblage arose; this time with
out any other summons than a wave
of tho hand by tho clerk.. Justice
Miller took the hand of the chief jus
tice nnd with a smile of welcome nd-
dressed him in a low voice ns follews:
"I welcome you in behalf of this
court, as one of its members and its
chief justice."
Tho chief justice bowed, took his
seat and proceeded to hear applica
tions for admission to tho bar. At
the conclusion of the ceremony the
court adjourned, in order that the
members might pay their respects to
the president of tho United States.
THE STREET CARS NOT MOLESTED.
Chicago, Oct. 8. Cars were started
this morning over the the north side
lines at 730 o'clock. The cars were
drawn by horses and manned by about
a dozen policemen each, and left tho
city limits and other car barns, des
tined for the business center. The
cars were not molested by strikers
and on-lookers gathered around
barns. The down trip was made suc
cessfully, without any mishaps to
speak of, although the cars were some
what hampered by tho crowd of vehi
cles which took up tho tracks. Com
paratively few people rode in them.
mormons in MEXICO.
New York, Oct 8. A city of Mex
ico special says: Henry Erving,
representative of tho Mormon colo
nies in tho state of Chihuahua, de
nies the report that tho Mormon
church bought four hundred million
acres of land in that state, formerly
tho property of the Zuni Indians.
He nlso denies tho chargo that the
Mormons here now number only 150
families, occupying 200,000 acres of
land. In Chihuahua there is much
disbussion in the press regarding
Mormon immigration and the gen
eral sentiment is adverse to it.

WnAT SHERMAN THINKS.
New York, Oct 8. Blakely Hall's
Washington special to tho Sun con
tains an interview witu. Senator buer
man, who said ho did not think Can
ada was ready for annexation, nor
that tho president's retaliation mes
sage would help oither annexation or
a commercial union; it would rnther
create hostility. Sherman believed a
political union was tho inevitable
destiny. If tho retaliatory measure
was carried ont tho results would bo
unpleasant England was a great
free trade country; Canada and tho
United States cannot be frco trade
countries. That very trouble will
make it difficult for England to con
sent to our union with Canada.
Thero can bo no such thing as a
partial acquisition of Canada. Sher
man thought retaliation measures
should never have been authorized.
Should Canada in turn resort to re
taliation measures, it would stop
their trade. Union would bo more
valuable to them than to tho United
States. The senator seemed to think
annexation necessary or was inevit
able. SOME MORE SUITS.
