"Penelope, can't you say some thing to soften the blow?" im plored the young man. "Oh, Philip, Philip! What can I say? It is all over between us." "That doesn't soften it any," re joined Philip; "that's what you said before." And the unhappy youth looked mournfully at a ten-dollar volume of poems he had presented her a few months before, and heaved a sip-h so deep, so profound, that it made his shoes perceptibly tighter. "Penelope," hecontinued, "when a young man builds all his hopes on the promise of a young woman and that young woman deliber ately goes back on that promise, it knocks the props as it were, out from under bis hopes, and they come down, kerswash! You may have a perception some time, Pen elope," he added with increasing gloom, "of the feelings of a human being standing by a wreck of this kind and looking at the debris of his own happiness." "I couldn't help it, Philip," she replied, "I have become satisfied that wo were not made for each other. 'We should not be happy together. "We " "Is it because I am a mug wump?" he demanded. "No, Philip, it is not that, I think with proper nursing, you would recover from that in time. Neither have I any objection to your personal appearance, your position in society, your habits " "My habits!" he ejaculated. "I hope not. Penelope Witherspoon, 1 never in my life took a drink of anything intoxicating, never chewed tobacco, never smoked a cigar, never went to a circus, and never was in a ball-room. I don't drink tea or coffee, eat peanuts, chew gum, read novels, swear, gamble, lie, use snuff, play check ers, sit up late at night, goto thea ters, eat between meals, nor read Amelie Rives. I never kissed a young woman in my life " "So far as my experience goes," asserted Penelope, retrospectively, "I can certify that you have not. Philip," she added, with a glow of tender womanly sympathy on her face, ''you asked me to say some thing to soften the blow. I think I can foresee a great future for you. Your habits have fitted you for a shinintr career." "In what capacity, may I ask?" "As a SoOO-a-week freak in a dime museum." Chicago Tri bune. Killed in a Logging Damp. From Mr. Noah Taylor, who was in town Wednesday, wo learn of averysad accident which caused the death of a young man named McCloud, in Leavitt & Clemens' logging camp, Tuesday afternoon. The young man had begun work in the camp the morning of his death, being employed as skid greaser and log roller. No one was present when he was killed, but it is supposed that in rolling a log into the slide, he failed to loosen the jack, and was car ried along with the log ome distance. When found his head was terribly mangled, he hav ing been killed instantly. He had friends in the upper part of the county, who were informed of the sad affair, and who attended to his burial Wednesday afternoon, in Ford's cemetery. The young man came from Wisconsin last spring, having been employed in Weather wax's camp since April. He was highly respected by all who knew him. Ho was about 20 years of age. Chehaiis Vidette, 5. How She Softened The The Unhappy Youth Victoria, B. C, Oct. 7. The steamer Cariboo J?ly,C&pt. Myers, from Skeena river for Victoria, went ashore in . Granville channel on Sunday night last at 11 o'clock. Mate Roberts, certified as master, was in charge of the steamer. The night was bright and the pas sage is a clear run for fifty miles, and the accident is due to culpa ble negligence. The steamer went on at extreme high tide, and as soon as the tide ebbed the stern filled with water and the deck cargo floated about. She was loaded with 3,500 cases of salmon from the Windsor Canning com pany. The passengers and crew got safely ashore, and were picked up by the steamer Quictetej from Alaska and landed here this morn ing. The steamer was valued at $18,000. There is no insurance, and probably she will be a total loss. The cargo was insured. The schooner Favorite, the last of the sealing fleet, arrived this morning with 2,350 seals. The World this morning prints the follewing: It has just transpired through friends in Milan that Laura Schei mer, a beautiful native of Boston, 28 years old, baa been imprisoned in the Sultan's harem with thirteen other women. She is an opera singer and trav eled through the United States under Strakosch's management. She became infatuated with the English tenor' Byron, with whom she went to Europe. Her friends say he married her, but their life was an unhappy one for her. Last winter the American colony at Milan heard that she had be come an inmate of the harem, and was the sultan's favorite. Accord- ling to the story, the sultan is be lieved to have become incensed at the attempt of. the American min ister to Turkey, who tried, on ac count of Laura's friends, to get the woman out of her captivity, so one night poison was placed in the ice cream furnished the occupants ot the imperial seraglio. Fourteen poor women, including the American girl, were found dead in the morning, and the bodies of the victims were hurried away to nameless graves. The story is full' believed in Milan.
