A round trip every nine days will be the quota of work for each San Francisco passenger steamer. This will be tough on tho Geo. W. Elder, if she continue on this route. The editor of tho Port Townsend Argus is a candidate for the Wash ington territory legislature, a great and singular waste of good material in an effort at insignificant success. Accidents aro becoming too fre quent on tho N. P., O. S. L., and O. K. & N. railroad lines. The latest were an accident near Pocatello, Ida ho, last Friday, wherein five men were killed. The Newi reports the sale of Jacob Kamm'a boat, tho Undine, to go over on tho Sound, taking the place of the Fleetwood, between Seattle and Olympia, thus joining tho hun dred otherOolnmbia river steamboats now in northern waters. The Scattlo Poit-Intelligencer has beeu sued for 515,000 for alleged libel Damages ngainst a solid paper like tho Post-Intelligent er wonld amount to somothing and could be collected, which is probably one of the weighty reasons for bringing suit. An apparent cripple has been peiL dling pencils for some days. Yestor day chief Barry undertook to inter view him wnen tho fellow recovered the complete use of his limbs and skipped oil with the utmost agility. It beats the mind cure, so it does. Tt ;. The tug Co lumbia and the steam launch Jionita failed to pass inspection. The Co lumbia will go to San Francisco and have new boilers pnt in. The Tacoma Ledger states that the noo'a TTnrhnrrnilrnnil is nn nssnrod fact) that Geo. They wear bine flannel skirts and white blouses, and have vowed to re main maidens until Harrison is elect ed. In the samo town seventy-five young men have sworn never to marry until Cleveland is elected. Tho rest of the people of the town are mad to think there are 150 idiots in city! There are 252 men no woman in the state penitentiary. Bo soon as the circuit courts now in session through out the state run their grist through the number will bo increased. Near ly all the convicts are employed mat mg stoves, sixty a day being com pleted. Herbert F. Beocher, custom house inspector for this northwest coast, was in Astoria Sunday, inspecting the accounts in tho custom house. He found everything O. K, and com plimented collector Hobson and dep uties Higgins and Ferguson on the manner in which the office was con ducted. Again reports come from the vicin ity of Saddle Mountain of silver ore ledges and finds of gold. Many are positive that free milling ore showing both gold and silver, in paying quan tities, can ue minea mere. A good coai mine uncovered in that vicinity would beat in value either a gold or silver mine. J. W. Clemens of Wahkiakum county, who was nominated for rep resentative by the Republicans of that district, states that he declines the nomination to that position. As soon as the central committees from the several counties can communi cate with one another the vacancy will be supplied. The Lewis and Clarke Lumber and Manufacturing company have nearly 4 miles of tramway laid from the mill, which is about two-and-a-half miles east of the Seaside house, and another half mile will bring the road to Stave bolt landing, on Lewis and Clarke's. White resulted in a victory for the former. Tho race was for 31,000 a side and was ot interest, being be lieved to decide the superiority of one style of boat over the other. Frank Bruno, whom every one within hailing distance of the police court is well acquainted with, has fallen from grace. Sometime ago he braced up and staid sober for a SDace ot periods, but he has got down again. Yesterday Judge Jewett threatened to send him to tho insane asylum for ten years if he didn't quit fooling with intoxicants. Frank seems to have taken a contract to drink all the whisky up, and is in a good way now to travel with some temperance lec tnrer as a horrible example. The British ship Wasdalehns sailed from San Francisco for Liverpool with a cargo of enormous value, the total aggregating S407.000. Of th s 8348.000 is salmon. Tho shippers are as follews: D. L. This was the largest salmon shipment over sent out of San Fran cisco, and is only excelled in size by that of the Wallacetown, which loaded and took to Liverpool 70.000 cases from Astoria, and a few others. S. M. Johnson, of East Portland, wants that city lo pay him S30 for attendance upon a smnll pox patient last July. S. M. holds a strong hand and is going to play it for all it is worth. The small pox patient died, Johnson helped bury the cadaver. and says if tho city doesn't come up with the S30 he'll tell where ho bur ied the defunct, thus opening tho way for a suit ngainst the city for dam ages by the owner of the land. What n surprise party it wouldj bo for a man to buy a lot in East Portland, and digging for a cistern come across the remains of tho deceased! When the two houses of congress were called to order at noon yester day the session had become the long est by twenty-four hours in Ameri can history. The longest preceding session was that of 1850, the year of the Missouri compromise, which was adjourned at noon September 30. Constructively tho session of 1850, following tho impeachment proceed ings against president Johnson, was longer, the adjournment having taken place November 10, but as a matter of fact congress took a six weeks' rest from July 27 and never after wards had a quorum or attempted to transact business. MoCormac, a patient at the insane asylum, entered the room of an at tendant and asked for a sheet of pa per. While the attendant's baok was turned McCormao took a razor, hang ing in a case on the walL Two hours later he entered the water closet, say ing as he opened the door, "Send for a doctor." He closed the door, sat down in the closet and cut his throat from ear to ear. He made four or five gashes. Another patient was within three feet of him when the deed was committed. McCormao had been in the asylum three years. He was formerly a law yer at Portland, and subsequently at Astoria. His remains will be shipped to Eugene City on Wednesday for burial. The suicide's father is Rev. J. A. McCormao, of Astoria. The above dispatch will be a shock to many who knew the young man, who was at one time city attorney, but subsequently exhibited such strong symptoms of insanity as to ne cessitate his removal to the asylum. His father was at Gray's river when the news arrived. A messenger was sent for him by boat, but it is doubt ful if he will arrive before to-day. PERSONAL MENTION. Jno. Bryce, Jr., is in the city. Hon. T. A. McBride goes to Port' land this evening. Death of J. T. Borcheri . J. T. Borohers of Knappton, W. T., tell off the new wharf at the Knapp ton mill at eight o'clock last Sunday evening and was drowned. His cries for help were heard but it was im possible, in the darkness to locate him, and his body was not recovered till yesterday morning. Deoeased was well known here, where for many years he was in business. About a week ago his house near Knappton burned down, he and his wife losing nearly everything they possessed. Mr. and Mrs. Leo. Mansur and other charitable neighbors, stirred them selves and succeeded in scouring olothing and shelter for the old couple, and a new house was roady to be roofed, it being their intention to move in to-day. Their son Henry Borchers, at Portland, as tele graphed to yesterday. The funeral will be at Knappton, to-day. "Gets There Just the Same." An eastern exchange says: An in telligent waiter at ono of the city ho tels thus sizes up his guests by their manner of asking for the bill of fare. He says the young lawyer will ask for "the briefs," in an apparently forget ful way; the ball-player wants to seo the "score card"; the drummer asks for the "bill ot goods"; the actor calls for the "play bill"; the merchant calls for the "inventory"; the dancing-master for the ''programme"; the old law yer requests the "bill of particulars"; tho horseman the "list of entries"; tho singer wants the "score." and the ship captain tho "clearance papers"; the regular tourist calls for the "menu." arid the printer for tho "take"; the druggist absently asks for Hie "prescription"; the railroad man wants to see your "orders," and tho parson the "creed"; the common boarder asks for the "card," and I ho doc I or for tho "symptoms." (Jut here the average Ban Francis can does not find it necessary to ad vertise his business thus, ho ho sim ply asks for the "bill," but he "gots there just the same." S. F. Call. AVnuted. What is this "nervous trouble" with which so many seem now to be af flicted? If you will remember a few years ago the word Malaria was com paratively unknown, to-day it is as common as any word in the English language, yet. this word covers only the meaning of another word used by our forefathers in times past. So it is with nervous diseases, as they and Malaria are intended to cover what our grandfathers called Billiousness, and all are caused by troubles that arise from a diseased condition of the Liver which in performing its func tions finding it cannot dispose ot the bile through the ordinary channel is compelled to pass it off through the system, causing nervous troubles, Malaria, Bilious Fever, etc You who nr6 suffering can well appreciate a cure. We recommend Green's Au gust Flower. Its cures aro mar velous. Thirteen boats of the Empire can nery took eyu hsli one night last week. The fishermen up Coos river are also doing well.
