During the time the Alaska Fur Seal
company has had the privilege of tak
ing seals from the waters of that terri
tory it has paid over 88,000,000 to the
government, or a sum exceeding by
over S1,000,000 the price paid for the
whole of Alaska with the seal islands
included.
Reports of gold found in the Black
Hills may bring an exodus in that di
rection next year. Gold seekers who
believe in coincidences will recall the
fact that for forty years back every
year that ended in the number 9 has
been celebrated for the discovery of
rich deposits of precious metals. Cal
ifornia in 1849, Pike's Peak in 1859,
Nevada in 18G9, audLeadvillein 1879,
all bear out this statement.
Africa is destined to swallow up a
good deal of the world's surplus en
ergy. Some years ago Gordon went
there to find the Mahdi; then Emin
Bey followed in the hope of finding
Gordon; Stanley, after waiting a year
or so, started out to hunt up Emin
Bey, and now Lieutenant "Wiseman
has begun a search for Stanley. Be
fore very long it will become neces
sary for some daring fellow to look
for Wiseman, and he will, of course,
be followed by another explorer, who
in turn will be sought for by another,
and so on indefinitely. If this sort of
thing is to go on there will be an
endless procession of fellows getting
lost in the jungles of Africa, in their
vain endeavor to reach the other fel
lows who have gone before. The
Dark Continent is an almost bound
less land of mystery, and the fate
of these adventurous explorers
may never be known. They
may fall victims to the African fever,
or be devoured by wild animals, or
perish in a strugglo with their savage
foes. On the other hand, they may
win favor with powerful tribes, and
in that strange land build up great
states and empires. One thing is cer
tain, these numerous expeditions into
the heart of Africa are blazing the
way for civilization. Whatever may
befall these early explorers, nothing
can prevent the final 'subjugation of
Africa by the whites. The continent
will be divided out among the Eu
ropean powers, and at no distant day
it will become one of the most im
portant regions on the globe. Let the
procession of explorers go on. Many
of them may be lost, but others will
follow, and in the end the indomitable
energy of the white man will conquer
and hold this mysterious laud and all
its treasures.
The "Ventnre" Heard From.
The schooner Venture returned
from the far north Sunday, and is an
chored in the bay. Last fapring the
Venture was purchased at Astoria by
John C. Nixon, of Seattle, and fitted
out as a sealer. She carried a large
fish net, and instead of shooting the
seals, her crew would cast the net
and catch them. While in the north
a number of the crew was drowned
and the captain seemed to bo de
moralized, for he placed the schooner
iu charge of an Indian agent, and
struck out in an open boat for Fort
Simpson. Nothing has ever been
heard from him since, and Mr. Nixon
supposed he had been drowned, to
gether with the other members of the
crew, but a tew weeks ago Mr. Harry
Algar went north on the steamer Jios
cowitz with a crew to bring the
schooner down, and on his arrival at
Fort Simpson, he learned that the
rrmaing captain had reached there in
safety.
Wbere he went from there, or what
he deserted the schooner for remains
a mystery. The crew that went north
to bring the Venture down took fish
ing gear with them, and as tho vessel
had several tons of salt on board, they
had no trouble loading her with hali

Encouraging Eeports Prom Panama.
Three Very Offended Chinese Jrandarins.
Portland, Sept. 26. This city
seems to be infested with burglars.
Lodging houses are as yet the only
places entered.
A case of a very unusual character
went to trial before Judge Stearns
this morning, namely that of the
state of Oregon against John Lewis
and Etta Lewis, jointly indicted for
alleged criminal associations at the
Merchant's Hotel, in this city, on the
12th of last July. The female de
fendant is the daughter of Bev. S. M.
Driver, of Walla Walla. The male
defendant is a brother of the woman's
husband. The case was given to the
jury before noon, and that body took
one ballot and then they found John
Lewis guilty. His counsel gave no
nce mai mey wouia move tor a new
trial.
This morning, at 1130. Dennis
Dooley, a farmer, was driving up Sixth
street wnen ins team grew frightened
ana ran away. At the corner of A
street the wagon collided with an
electric light mast and was turned
over, throwing the man out upon the
sidewalk, breaking his left shoulder
blade and producing quite an ugly
scalp wound. He was picked np in
an insensible condition and taken to
St Vincent's hospital, where his in
juries were treated.
TEE rELIOW FEVER.
Jacksonville, Sept. 2G. Only nine
new cases are reported this morning
and one death. This is one of the
brightest and most pleasant days of
the season, cool ana refreshing. The
belief is becoming general that the
epidemic will soon run its course. A
cordon has been thrown around the
city to prevent the ingress of pau
pers.
HEAVT WEATHER.
B03TOK, Sept. 2G. A violent wind
and rain storm is raging along the
whole New England coast this morn
ing. The telegraph wires are down
in all directions. The damage will
be large.
THAT WAS RIGHT.
New York, Sept. 26. Twenty-one
little girls, from 9 to IB years of age,
were brought hero yesterday by Mor
mon elders, from Europe, on route to
Salt Lake City, and were ordered to
day, by Collector Magono, to bo sent
back to Europe.
EXTENSIVE SMUGGLING;.
Ottawa, Sept. 26. Hon. McKenzie
Bowell, minister of customs, has just
returned from British Columbia. Ho
says it is quite evident that a Itera
tive business is being done in
tho manufacture of prepared opium at
Victoria and smuggling it into the
United States along the frontier. It
is imported in tho rough state and
duty is paid so the dominion govern
ment is powerless to remedy the evil.
The importation has increased from
Bix thousand pounds in 18S0 to 105,
000 iu 1887, of which 90 per cent was
smuggled into tho United States.
He thinks tho United States should
send detectives to Victoria to work
the matter up.
ENCOURAGING REPORTS.
Panama, Sept. 26. A well informed
correspondent writes to the Star and
Jlerald: "It is learned that several
contracts on tho canal have been fin
ished, turned over to tho canal com
pany and accepted after inspection.
Facts are stubborn things, and these
irrefutably give the lie to innumera
ble vague floating rumors in circula
tion about tho canal company's shut
ting down work. Of course they are
shutting dowu just as fast as they
can but only at the completion of
their work. Other equally important
sections will also shut down, nnd ere
the outside world suspects it and
whilst it is yet buttonholing itself
and speculating on the gloomy pros
pects of Panama canal work the
cable will flash through Christendom
with the tidings of ships floating over
the isthmus of Panama."
OFrENDED MANDARINS.
Ottawa, Sept. 26. Serious trouble
is threatened by the three Chinese
commissioners brought here in bond,
in a bonded boxcar. They intend to
carry the matter to Lord Salisbury
himself. They are evidently impor
tant personages, and were treated
like common Chinese laborers. They
came from New York, and on their
way west first-class passage was re
fused them. The customs, police
on this side said the law required
them to be treated the same as pack?
ages in bond. They were locked up in
the box car and so brought through.
The man who let them out of the car
incurred a fine of S150. The custom
authorities have apologized and hope
to escape farther ill consequence.
MRS. LANGTRr DISHEARTENED.
London, Sept. 26. Mrs. Langtry,
it is reported, has returned to Paris
disheartened, her husband having re
fused absolutely to see or talk with
her on the subject of a divorce. The
solicitors of both parties met, but Mr.
Langtry was not there. It is report
ed that he is earning a good living
and won't consent to any arrange
ment to hand his wife over to another
man.

CALCUTTA,Sept, 26. The British col
umn under colonel Graham has en
tered the Jelapa Pass. The great
force which opposed them was badly
armed and handled, and easily routed
