Dr. Kinney Interviews The Southern Pacific People At San Francisco. A reporter of the Oregonian met at the Holton house last eve ning, Dr. Aug. Kinney, of Astoria, who has just returned from a trip to San Francisco. The doctor was called to the Golden Gate by the dangerous ill ness of a sister, but whose recovery enables him to return. He does not allow the practice of his pro fession to interfere with his duties regarding public enterprises. Dr. Kinney has always manifested a great interest in the project of a railroad for Astoria, and on being asked a he had any new informa tion on that question replied: "While I was in San Francisco I took occasion to call on the resi dent officers of the Southern Pa cific railroad, and lay before them tho advantages of building a line from Forest Grove or Cornelius through the Nebalem country to Astoria. In my opinion, either the products of the great coal fields or the timber supply of this rich sec tion, unsupported by the other, would guarantee a profitable in vestment for such a road. These valuable products cannot be mar keted without a railroad, and so far as I know, no railroadman who has looked into the matter doubts the judiciousness of such an enter prise. "What success did your efforts meet?" "I regret to say that so far as I could judge, little encouragement could be derived from their ex pressions on the subject. Know ing the taciturn nature of railroad officials, however, I am not dis posed to regard my mission as wholly fruitless." "What efforts are Astoria oeo- ple making, if any, for a railroad to their place?" "Their movement, as you know, has taken the direction of a pro posed line southward from Astoria along the ocean towards Tillamook and iaquina bay. The amount raised so far is enough to com plete a road as far as Seaside. It is possible that the Oregon Pacific will build northward along the ocean to a junction with the As toria line. I am informed that this project has met with favor in Oregon Pacific circles." "Do you think there is any chance of the Northern's building into Astoria?" "I do not think there is at pres ent. My reason for so thinking is that I am satisfied that there is an agreement between the Oregon Railway & Navigation company and the Northern Pacific, by which the latter is bound to abstain from such an extension. There is no other way of accounting for their neglect to do so; for from Hun ter's Point to Astoria is only fifty five miles, and considering the im mense summer travel and the traf fic of the lower Columbia which would fall into their hands, there can be no doubt of the profit which the extension would yield." "Perhaps the Oregon Railway & Navigation company contem plate such a step." "In my opinion they do not; nor will they as long as the whole island traffic of Astoria is swllowed up by their boats. They filed ar ticles, it is true, some time ago, looking towards such a road, but nothing of a practical nature lias come of it yet. "Probably the only solution of the necessity, then, is an independ ent road?" "I think so; and if an independ ent company, showing evidence of its ability to carry forward its part of the agreement should propose to build a railroad from Astoria to a railroad connection to the east ward Hunter's point, or near Forest Grove, for instance it could obtain a well-secured condi tional subsidy of $150,000 in less than two weeks' time. There is enough business now in sight for such a road to make it a better paying line than any equal ex tent of railway line in Oregon." Oregonian, 21. An Excellent Medicine. Z. E. llAitnisox, 51. D., Gordonsvilie, Va. Mothers And Eebellious Boys. "Maybe you think," says a bach elor cynic, "that mothers break their hearts over children who are holy terrors. But you are wrong. As a matter of fact they are proud of the misdeeds of their small chil dren. They are proud of terrors. They are always afraid their chil dren will be goody-goody milk sops. Don't you know that a woman secretly likes a spice ot wickedness in her offspring that is, until they grow up. Of course, she'll spank h4r boy for fighting with another boy, but she'll spank him twice as hard if he has been licked as she will if ho had the best of it. I believe the tenderest mother in the world likes to be rebelled against sometimes. It shows spirit, and a mother's aw fully proud of spirited children. If she was sure her boy would not get hurt she wduld like to go out and see him fight another boy. Ihey're queer things, women. The proposition that all tho world loves a lover probably does not hold good in Jacksonville now, This whole yellow fever business is a love affair. McL ormick, the man who brought the yellow fever to Jacksonville, is a lover. His sweetheart was in Tampa, and Tampa was isolated on account of yellow fever. But vellow fever or no yellow fever, McCormick wanted to see his girl; so he man aged to pass the cordon and steal an interview with his love. Then he came back to Jacksonville and brought yellow fever with him. Surgeon-General Hamilton is au thority for this short history of the spread of yellow fever. It is an other confirmation of the wisdom of the sage who once declared there was a woman at the bottom of every mischief. The editor had written "bullish," but the good old deacon laid the paper right down and went to the tele phone and said'to his breker: "Sell me out at once for whatever you can get. I Iiavo been expecting something like this for a long time, and I don't propose to have old Satan walk in on me." Wall Stmt Nacs. "I saw you again with young Dndcly, last evening, Miss Smarte. It begins to look serious." "Oh, not at all. I really don't care any thing for him any more than for anybody else; but then it is such a convenience to have him with me -when one wants a horse car.
