tflpMgMMmi,J,. HI Llllll OJ m Sails gtffoto. ASTOBIA. OBEGON: TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 18. 1883. John P. Irish, editor of the S. Fm Alta, lias declined a congressional nomination. Sensible man. Why should lie want to step down into congress! The opposition to Powderly is en deavoring to make Mm commit him self in the present political contest A series of questions have been sent to him. He is accused of having an eye to the commissionership of the department of labor if Cleveland is elected. ALosfDOji preacher placarded the city with notices that he would preach in Spurgeon's tabernacle on the subject: ",-;-:--?-!-." There was a large congregation, to whom he announced the text, "Stand thou still awhile," and then said his subject was "The Pauses of Life." JonN McCune, the largest single oil producer in the world, landed at Castle Garden less than twenty-five years ago with scarcely a dollar in his pocket He drifted into the oil comr try, became an oil-well driller, and his estate is now worth 310,000,000. There is no chance for a poor man in this country. The postmaster at Carthage, O., is in a quandary. He is at a loss to know whether he had better pay the assess ment made on him or resign. The Carthage postoffico pays 'the munifi cent sum of 375 per annum, and the committee have notified the post master that he has been assessed 3100 for campaign purposes. The Chinese are peculiarly nerve less people. An observer in China notices that the Chinaman is able to sleep anywhere, upon a brick for a pillow or upon a bed of stalks. "It would be easy to raise in China an array of 1,000,000 men nay of 10,000, 000 tested by competitive examina tion as to their capacity to go to sleep across three wheelbarrows, head downward like a spider, their mouths wide open, and a fly inside." Miss Emma Pelch, of Danvers, Mass., was taken ill some months ago, and from the fact that her mother died from cancer, she became pos sessed with the idea that her sickness was from the same cause. Her phy sicians could find no indication of cancer, but she claimed that she had one, and located it She refused food saying it distressed her. At her desire after she died, an autopsy was held, and no cancer could be found. It was decided that her disease was purely sympathetic. Great Goneness. Ilwaco. Sept. 16, '8a The turbulent waves beat a solemn requium upon the sandy shores of north beach; gone are the cloudless days, gone are the bright-eyed maid ens, whose merry laugh floated on the summer air like chimes of silver bells, gone are tho mirth and glad ness, the fairy figures, the happy life of youth and beauty. The pale moon shines on . the scenes of departed pleasures with a radiance that suits well the melancholy scene. Here be neath this nodding evergreen love's old, old story was told anew the heart-beats quickening to the lisping words of cupid; here, too, proudest hopes were smothered with a word. Beside yon decaying stump, glisten ing in the moonlight, lies a mass of broken crockery reminders of former usefulness; near this winding path reposing in pathetic solitude is a tiny boot, well worn and the buttons gone the arched instep tells of its own er's pride; it perhaps has peeped from the drapery of a wedding gown and parried its lovely wearer o'er the pol ished floor, impelled by strains of sweet music. Its mission has been performed, and now with the dew glistening upon its shapely form, dis carded in this lonesome place it rests, a forgotten and nseloss thing. The sadness of departed glory has full sway; the moon, now sinking in the trreat beyond, sheds a parting ray on the goneness that everywhere is seen. Not Goxe. Don't Experiment. The sensational pre3S is the result of a misconception of what constitutes news. Charles Dudley "Warner says it has grown nP by giving notoriety to mean persons and mean events. That is a perfect defi nition of sensational journalism. Take one day's "news" in one of onr local or er gans: A hysterical woman who pretends to enter heaven in a trance, an elope ment, an interrupted bigamy, an actual bigamy, an adultery, another elopement, an abduction and seduction case, a case of marital infidelity, and a dime-novel biography of a "bandit chief," all tricked out in turgid and polysyllabic composi tion and under lickerish lines of displav headings, take up seven-eighths of the first page. If necessary to mention any of it es "news," it all should have been put in one-eighth of the space. But it is elaborated, padded, bloated into undue proportions, and told in a style intended to attract by its snggestiveness. Of such is sensational journalism wherever prac ticed. Its excuse is that it finds readers. If the haunts of vice in its most hideous form were compelled to plead they could make the same excuse, that they have patrons. But if the tastes of the com munity shall finally fall to the level of those who demand feculent sensational ism in the press, its practices will soon decline to the level of the patrons of vice. The press has great power. But power is retained only by nsing it wisely. When a newspaper has the power to compel a business man to patronizo it, becaus3 if refused it can attack and ruin his busi ness, and it uses that power, it distinctly ranks itself with the thief, tho burglar and tho pickpocket. These would not stoal the property of others if it were voluntarily surrendered on demand. But its owners resist such n demand and so tho thieves steal. A business man in this city recently bad such an experience with one of our sensational newspapers, and he frankly says that next time a de mand for patronage is made he will ac cede to it or quit business, for this ex perience cost mm between three thous and and five thousand dollars to savo his business from ruin, in consequence of sensational publications mado about him in tho paper which had unsuccessfully solicitedins advertising patronage. If n member of tho Stock, Produce or Mer chants' Exchange were guilty of black mailing like that, ho would bo expelled. Then why should it be tolerated in a newspaper which must depend upon mer cantile patronago for its support V In another direction the habit of sen sationalism is working a debauchery in journalism. Tho tendency is strong to ward treating every person and every event in the corrupted style that is used in giving notoriety to mean persons and mean events. Depth and elevation are banished, and tho fashion is flippancy and the style superficial. Virtuous wom en and modest, who become properly the subjects of IcRitimato notice in the press, by roason of participation in edu cational, religious or other movements, are usually introduced to tho reader bv some young squirt's comment upon their abundance or tneir laci; ot animal charms." His ideas of contour and com plexion are either fired or dissatisfied, and bis paper demands that tho conclu sions of his lascivious physical survey shall bo set forth in a way to excite tho derision or set running tho slaver of rheumy rakes or ambitious young men who earnestly aspire to be blackguards. This downward tendency of sectionalism levels all ranks of conduct to the plane of the mean, to tho ground floor of un govemed passion, of lives that aro void of a high motive, and whero pare thoughts aro unthinkable. It is useless to arguo that all this is necessary to warn people of the consequences of vice. It allures and is no warning. As well might ono say that the hideous realisms of Zola have a purer moral tendency than the poems of Jean Ingelow or tho novels of Scott and Dickens. The common sense of all thoughtful people is in arms against the theory, and tho fears and solicitude of every parent war against it. But, as a final argument, the protes ter is pointed to success. Sensational journalism succeeds. Yes, sometimes it does. It makes money, occasionally, but, analyzed, its prosperity is based on black mail. "Wo afhrm without fear of success ful contradiction, that there is not now, and never has been in this country, a sensational journal that was not a black mailer. The two things go together al ways and everywhere. Show us tho columns of a newspaper and we can tell you tho history of its counting room, bo, it is a question whether what is called success in these instances, is what should be called success. If a man to morrow succeeds in robbing tho Bank of California, or the sub-treasury, getting criminal possession of all the millions in either place, is he excused from punish ment, banqueted at tho clubs and de clared by resolution in public meetings as a credit to the state? He has as much right to bo as sensational and blackmail ing journalism baa to bo called a success. Alta. Coffee and cake, ten cents, at the Central Restaurant Fine Parlor Organ.
