TniBTT years ago insanity was al

Thk French military commission
has proved that the shelter afforded
by a layer of concrete ten feet thick
is greater than that of iron protected
merely by plates, while the two com
bined afford practically perfect protec
tion against melinite, which seems to
be the biggest bugaboo yet out for
military men.
Thf. eighth regiment of the United
States cavalry is now on route from
Texas to Dakota and Montana. It is
making the longest march in the his
tory of the military world. The regi
ment, when it arrives at its destina
tion, will have traversed over two
thousand four hundred miles of coun
try. The march will bo completed by
October 1st The soldiers encountered
snakes in the northern part of Texas.
Commodore Vanderdilt made his
great fortune of S120,000,000 after he
reached the age of 05. At that age
his wealth was 15,000,000, and by the
purchase of the Harlem road bib
wealth was doubled. Then hcbouglit
the Hudson river road and doubled
his fortune again. Finally he ac
quired the Lake Shore and Michigan
Southern and his western properties,
and for a third time his estate was
doubled.
Hanson Cnua, of Kentucky, is
probably the largest man iu the world.
His weight is given at 792 pounds,
and it requires 37 yards of cloth to
make him a suit. He is G feet 4
inches in hight, is 31 years old and
weighed 11 pounds at birth. When
two years old he took a 31,000
prize at a baby show in New York,
tipping the beam at 200 pounds at
that time. His father weighed 115
pounds and his mother 122.
A notable feature in connection
with the extension of the Northern
Pacific system into Manitoba is the
terms of contract made with the gov
ernment of that province. The bond
ing limit is fixed at SM,000 a mile and
the government retains $8,000 worth
of the bonds, the company selling the
other S8,000 ill order to complete the
work. The government agrees to
make up deficiencies, but will careful
ly scrutinize the cost. Stock water
ing by the company is thus avoided.
The matter'of admitting the North
ern Pacifie into a partnership with the
Union Pacific in the lease of the O. K.
& N. Co.'s lines seems, says the Taco
maNews, to be further away than
ever. In fact, in well informed rail
road circles, such an arrangement is
said to be among the things next to
impossible. Charles Francis Adams,
president of the Union Pacific, is said
to bo strongly opposed to the joint
lease. When here he expressed him
self very emphatically on the ques
tion. In conversation with a proml
nent railroad man he said: "I am
strengly opposed to entering into a
joint lease with the Northern Pacific,
and nothing would induce me to en
ter into an alliance. The position of
the Union Pacific, under the present
condition of affairs, is a very strong
one, and an alliance with the North
em Pacific would weaken instead of
strengthening it"
