ASTORIA. OREGON:
SATUKDAY
..SEPTEMBER 8. 1888.
"Maj.-Gek. Schofield is to be given
all the rights, privileges and powers
that belong to the rank of general
and lieutenant-general of the army,
barring the title itself and the right
to draw S13.0CD, instead of $11,000, a
year for his services. The titles that
were created for Grant and Sherman
and Sheridan will be allowed to lapse
into innocnons desuetude.
This will be one of the shortest
campaigns in our history. Lass than
two months more before election, and
the letters of acceptance not out yet.
When old Tippecanoe was the Whig
candidate he was nominated in De
cember, 1839. But it took a long
time in those days of stage coaches
and weekly mails to present national
issues to the people at their homes.
Tnc crop reports in this country are
losing a great part of the credit that
formerly attached to them. If these
statements are not prepared and put
forth in the direct interest of certain
speculative cliques, then the best in
formed observers are wofully mis
taken. Wo have had within sis
months the gram crop of this country
practically wiped out of existence, on
two separate occasions, and as a sort
of offset we have had the reported
growth, in a fair way for harvesting,
of the largest grain crop that this
country has ever seen. Theso crop
reporters do nothing by halves. The
harvest is either an astonishingly
bountiful one, or every blade of grain
is blighted beyond the hope of resto
ration. But, as we said above, these
statements have been of late so obvi
ously fictitious that public confidence
in them has been practically de
stroyed. A friend traveling in Canada sends
us a copy of the Montreal Herald
of August 28th. It tallcs plainly ou a
topic that our northern friends are
discussing a good deal. It says:
The Herald has no desire to part
company with England. We have a
sincere love and veneration for our
parent country, but we feel that Can
ada is in its present btate neither fish,
tlesh nor good red herring. And it
should not be forgotten that of tho
five million inhabitants of Canada,
one million and a half have no senti
mental attachment to Great Britain.
The French of lower Canada have
recognized in the English sovereign a
just and liberal ruler, under whom
they have enjoyed at least as large a
measure of freedom as they could
have found elsewhere, but to them
Canada is of infinitely greater impor
tance than the convenience of En
gland's foreign office. They are con
tent to belong to the British em
pire so long as the empire recognizes
that one portion of its domain is as
precious to it as tho other. If this is
not the feeling of England then let
tho trnth be told and Canada can set
her house in ordor and take counsel
about the future. But to be told on
every occasion that Canada must sub
mit to what is required of her be
cause the trade of the united kingdom
demands it and to be lectured and
chidden by the English press when
our complaints are inconvenient to
attend to, is a state of things incon
sistent with the dignity of Canada or
the rights of a freo people.

TIIE GREATEST STEAMBOAT RACE.
3Inre Than a Million Dollars Said to Have
Been Staled Upon theResnlt.
The greatest steamboat race that
was ever ruu iu the world was that
which occurred in June, 1870, from
New Orleans to St. Louis, between
the llobert E. Lee and the JSatcnez.
The latter was built at Cincinnati,
wns enmmnnded bv UantaiU 1. if.
T.p.itliprs. nnd in June of the above
vmr made the fastest time on record
"from New Orleans to St. Louis, 1,278
miles in three days, twenty-one hours
nnd fiftv-eicht minutes. '1 he llohei t
K. Lee was built at New Albany dur
ing the war, and was towed across
the river to the Kentucky side to
have her name painted on her wheel-
houses, a matter that was aesmeu
prudent in those exciting times. She
was commanded by Captain John W.
Caunon, who died at Frankfort. Ky.,
in 1882. t ,
There was great rivalry between
the boatB, aDd when the Natchez
mndA hpr treat run Captain Cannon
determined to beat it. He stripped
the Lee for the race removed an
parts of her upper works which were
calculated to catch the wind; re
moved all rigging and outfit that
could bo dispensed with to lighten
her; engaged the steamer Frank Par
goud to precede her a hundred miles
III1 1IIM ll.m LU DUlTUiJafK.... ...- o
with coal yards to have fuel flats
awaiting her in the middle of the
river at given points, to be taken in
tow under way until tne coai couia
be transferred to the deck of the Lee.
and then to be cnt loose nnd float
back. Ha refused all bnsiness of
every kind, ana wouiu receive no
passengers. The Natchez returned
to New Orleans and received a few
hundred tons of freight and a few
passengers, and was advertised to
leave for St. Louis June 30th.
In thn afternoon the llobeit E.
Lie backed out from tho levee, nnd
tlvo minutes later the Natchez fol
lowed her. The whole country
watched the race with breathless in
terest, as it had been extensively ad
vertised by the press, and the tele
graph attended its progress along the
river at every point. At an tue prin
cipal cities Natchez, Vicksburg,
Helena and Memphis people from
many miles were present to see the
racers pass, and the time of passing
was cabled to Europe. When Cairo
was reached tho race was virtually
ended, but the Lee proceeded to St.
Louis, arriving there in three days
eighteen hours and fourteen minutes
from the time she left New Orleans,
beating by thirty-three minutes the
previons record of tho Natchez. Tho
latter steamer had run into a fog and
grounded between Memphi? and
Cairo, which delayed her more than
six hours. It is said that 30,000 peo
ple crowded the wharf, the wiudows
and the housetops to welcome the
Lee on her arrival at St. Loins. Cap
tain Cannon was teudered a banquet
by tho business men of the city, and
was generally lionized while lie re
mained here.
It i" estimated that more than
Sl.000,000 changed hands ou tho re
sult of the Brent race. Many of the
bets were withdrawu, however, on the
gronnd that tho Lee had been as.
sisted the first hundred miloa of the
trin by the power of the irank I'ar-
aguurd added to her own, and many
steamboat men have over since re
garded tho Natchez as tho faster boat
of the two. but think she was out
generaled in the race by the Lee.
There was so much adverse comment
afterward by the press that there has
been no attempt since to repeat such
a performance. at. J.ontu uiaue-
