Railroad Lighthouse Life Crew NewsT Items From Across the Bay. Ilwaco, Aug. 25. Public school commences Septem ber 3rd, Mrs. M. Lambson principal. The school census taken June last gives 103 children free school this term and other terms this year. About three-fourths of our working citizens have gone to Gray's Harbor and Shoalwater bay to engage in fall fishing. Aside from the usual travel and ex citement caused by seaside visitors, the town is very dull socially, though business continues good. Undoubtedly there has been a larger crowd at Sea View and Tin ker's this summer than at any pre vious season. The hotels have been filled all the time, and a large amount of building lots and whole blocks have been sold. This is especially true of Tinker's, or East Portland camp. Your correspondent is ac quainted with a large number of cot tagers pu the beach and has, during the season, interviewed the majority of them in regard to the railroad and how they liked the new method of travel and transportation of freight. The usual answer from the male par ent was the railroad; and from the ladies, that they much preferred the old way of coming through the woods and along the beach in a big wagon. Probably, thongh. by next season, when the railroad company have per fected arrangements and their em ployes become more competent, there will be general satisfactiou among the traveling public. Mr. K. Osborn, the conductor, and not "one of the men employed about the yards," as your contemporary ex presses it, has recovered sufficiently to be out again. His left forearm was broken iu three places by the freight crashing against it. From him we learn that the accident was not caused by tho car being loaded too much on one side, nor by its striking a plank; but by a too high rate of speed on a curve. A party of us went over to How ard's deserted village at the Cape yes terday, and it looks lonesome enough. There was n little excitement, how ever, caused by a tiro on the beach among the logs near the officers' quarters, which was extinguished by the commanding oilicer and the- life crew. The latter are drilling regu larly and can beat the record. They run out the apparatus wagon filled with ropes, tackles, brass gun, etc., every thing compact and lashed. At the word of command every man has his place and duties to perform. The gun is loaded, shot line attached, gun discharged and tho line deftly thrownover tho cross trees erected like a ships mast. There is a man up aloft there who makes fast the line. Soou the big hawser is there too and stretched taught by tackles attached to the sand anchor. Then the breeches buoy are run up to the man at the mast head and he is transferred to dry land. Time 3 minutes, 45 seconds. They also have their boat drills, sig nals drills, telegraphing with flags from the lighthouse hill to McKenzie head. There is not much danger of any of them getting the scurvy. But they appear to be short of fresh wa ter. Although there is an immense reservoir full of water there don't seem to be enough to supply the com manding officer's household and the life crew, thongh formerly there was an abundance of water for the whole garison and the life crew. The lighthouse is receiving its an nual or semi-annual coat of paint. The gentleman in charge of the signal service building is reported to be yearning for a mother-in-law. C. B. Allen and Don have gone to Gray's Harbor. A body washed ashore yesterday directly in front of L. A. Loomis' resi dence. Coroner Hanselman and as sistants immediately repaired to the place and after the usual examina tion buried him. He was a man from 35 to 40 years of age, and apparently but a few days dead. incut 0 feet a inches, weight 180 pounds; complex fair, sandy hair: nothing in pants pockets but two small, cheap wooden handled Knives; new gum boots, JNo 11, short oil coat, brown color, blue overalls, shoddy pants ribbed, white flannel underclothing, double breast ed blue shirt, blue fishing shirt. No marks on body. He was buried near where found. This reminds some of us of a man of that description who was here last week who wanted to have his boat hauled overland to the bay, but he had very little money. He was in toxicated somewhat when he set sail for Shoalwater bay and went alone. This was on Friday before the last storm set in. It's probably the same man though his boat has not been found yet. This after noon a fire started in the rrtjrth end of the lumber yard of Geo. Weidler's mill and before it was discovered had gained almost uncontrollable head way. It was nearly 15 minutes be fore the engines could get to work and by that time the fire was raging with great fury. Pile after pile of dry lumber was burned up like so much chaff. A strong wind from the north swept the flames down the yard like a burning avalanche, sweeping everything combustible befor it. in the yard mere was over i:,uuu,- 000 feet of lumber. For a time the entire mill property was in imminent danger of being destroyed. Fortu nately the wind shifted and after a long and desperate fight the fire was got under control, it is very diffi cult to estimate the loss at this time. There is some insurance on the mill but how much is not known. The fire is supposed to have caught from a spark from a passing locomotive. It is estimated that not less than 2,000,000 feet of rough lumber was de stroyed. A TEXAS DUEXj.
