Ayer's Hair Vigor keeps the hair soft
and pliant, imparts to it the lustre and
freshness of youth, causes It to grow
luxuriantly, eradicates Dandruff, cures
nil scalp diseases, and is the most clean
ly of all hair preparations.
A YPR'Q Hair Vigor has given me
n I L.I I O perfect satisfaction. I was
nearly bald for six years, daring which
time I used many hair preparations, but
without success. Indeed, what little
hair I had was growing thinner, until
I tried Ayer's Hair Vigor. I used two
bottles of tho Vigor, and my head is now
well covered with a new growth of hair.
Judson B. Chapel, Peahody, Mass.
LI AID that has become weak, gray,
lli and faded, may have new life
and color restored to it by the use of
Ayer's Hair Vigor. My hair was thin,
faded, and dry, and fell out in large
quantities. Ayer's Hair Vigor stepped
tho falling, and restored my hair to its
original color. As a dressing for the
hair, thispreparation has no equal.
Mary N. Hammond, Stillwater, Minn.
lIRflR yotith, and beauty, in tho
V lUUilj appearance of tho hair, may
be preserved for an indefinite period by
tho uso of Ayer's Hair Vigor. A dis
ease of the scalp caused my hair to become-
harsh and dry, and to fall out
freely. Nothing I tried seemed to do
tno any good until I commenced using
Ayer's Hair Vigor. Three bottles of
this preparation restored my hair to a
healthy condition, and it is now soft
and pliant. My scalp is cured, and it
is also free from dandruff. Mrs. E. R.

A Useful Man.
Seth Green, who died last Sun
day, was the first man in this
country to attempt, on any impor
tant scale, the artificial propaga
tion of fish. He was born in Roch
ester, N. Y., March 19, 1817. He
was educated in the common
schools and early showed himself
a born naturalist, being passion
ately fond of hunting, fishing and
woodcraft. For many years he
was the proprietor of the only fish
and game market near his home.
At the ago of 20 he conceived the
idea of the artificial propagation
o fish, and shortly after, during a
trip to Canada, made observation
on the habits of salmon. Observ
ing that as soon as the spawn was
cast the male salmon and other
fish ate it, he devoted his atten
tion to methods of protecting it,
and increased tho yield of fish till
he had increased the product to
95 per cent. In 1S64 he discov
ered a method of artificially im
pregnating dry spawn, and began
the propagation of fish as a busi
ness at Caledonia, N. Y. In 1867
he experimented on the hatching
of shad at Holyoke, on the Con
necticut river, and by his improve
ments hatched in a fortnight's
time 15,000,000, and in 18G8, 40,
000,000. The work was subse
quently extended to Hudson, the
Potomac, the Susquehanna and
other important rivers, where lie
succeeded in propagating fifteen
of the more common species with
largely increased products. In
18G8 he was appointed one of the
fish commissioners of New York,
and afterwards made superintend
ent of fisheries in that state. He
transported in 1871 the first shad
ever taken to California, where
that fish is now abundant. He
hatched artificially the bpawn of
about twenty kinds of fish, also
hybridizing striped bass with shad,
shad with herring, brook trout
with salmon trout, brook trout
with California salmon trout, salm
on trout with whitefish, and Euro
pean trout with brook trout. He
invented appliances for use in fish
hatching, and wrote several books
on the subject. Nearly every
state and territory with clear wa
ter streams has established fish
hatcheries or is the recipient from
the government of young fish
hatched after Green's method, and
he has high claim to be remem
bered as one of the foremost bene
factors of the human race.
Before the New York immigra
tion committee last Saturday Pow
derly related that an agent of his
in Europe reported that on the
bill boards in all the large cities
in Europe were flaming posters,
telling how much better off the
people would be in America, and
how much wages they could earn,
etc. .Emigrants were drummed
up by steamship agents. The
witness visited a Pennsylvania
mine and found the opening sur
rounded by a tight board fence
twelve feet high. Inside, . in low
wooden buildings, were five rows
of beds. The bed clothing was
black and grimv. One- hundred
and five Hungarians ate from a
long pine table pork which was
alive with maggots and bread that
smelled. They wore shoes of
wood mado by themselves. They
had come to take the place of the
strikers in this, the Eckert mine,
and did succeed in breaking the
backbone of the strike. The im
mediate effect in the Lehigh re
gion was very bad. They finally
drift into all lines of work and
compete with American labor.
Mr. Powderly said he was down in
Carbondale in 1849, and fifteen or
twenty years ago, when the min
ers of that region were comforta
bly well fixed. They were mainly
natives. Now more than half the
miners are Moravians. They nev
er become Americanized, bring
nothing to America and usually
have one woman to eight or nine
men. They talked to one of these
women. She said she had no al
ternative. Eight of the men could
make ,a living for her, and if she
married any one they would starve.

Columbia Eiver Navigation.
A recent issue of the Pasco
ITeadligit gives the following his
torical facts concerning the navi
gation of the upper Columbia
river: i
In 1884 Capt. "W. P. Gray, not
being satisfied that it was impos
sible for a steamboat to navigate
the Columbia from Ainsworth to
Okanagon river and tap the Big
Bend country, made an offer to
Mr. C. H. Prescott, general man
ager, and Frank T. Dodge, super
intendent of the Oregon Railway
and Navigation company, to make
a reconnoisance of the river from
Priest rapids to Rock island, and
Okanagon or Big Bend country,
which was. accepted, they paying
only part of his expenses. On
captain Gray's return to Portland
he offered to take the steamer
Spokane from Ainsworth to the
mouth of the Spokane river in
seven days, with fifty tons of
freight which the United States
government was just at that time
contracting to have taken to Spo
kane, but for several rcasoiis the
trip was not made the principal
one being that the officer in charge
of the freight believed it to be
impossible to make the trip with a
steamboat. Capt. Gray's report
was filed in the company's office
and, we are informed, was followed
in detail by Capt. J. Y. Troup
when he took the steamer John
Gates through Priest rapids and
into Rock island rapids in 1SS".
