A pale, sad-faced woman, in a plain calico gown, stood in a crowd. The loud-voiced auction eer finally came to a lot of plain and somewhat worn funiture. It had belonged to tho pale woman and was being sold to satisfy the mortgage on it. One by one the articles were sold, the old bureau to one, the rocker to another, and the bed stead to a third. Finally the auc tioneer held out a child's high chair. It was old and rickety, and as the auctioneer held it up every body laughed everybody except the pale-faced woman. A tear trickled down her cheek. The auctioneer saw it and some how a lump seemed to come up in his throat and his gruff voice grew soft. He remembered a little high chair at home, and how it had once filled his life with sunshine. It was empty now. The baby laugh, the two little hands that were once held out to greet "p3pa" from the high chair were gone for ever. He saw the pale-faced wom an's piteous looks and knew that in her eye the little rickety high chair was more precious than if it had been made of gold and stud ded with diamonds. In imagination he could see the little dimpled cherub which it once held; could see the chubby little fist grasping the tin rattle box and pounding the chair full of nicks; could see the little feet which had rubbed the paint off of tho legs; could hear the crowing and laughing in glee, and now the little chair was empty. He knew there was an aching void in the pale-faced woman's heart; there was an Lis own. Somehow the day may come and go, but you never get over it. There is no one to dress in the morning, no one to put to bed at night. "Don't laughl" said the auction eer softly, as someone facetiously offered ten cents. "Many of you have little empty high chairs at home which money would not tempt you to part with." Then he handed the clerk a bill out of his own pocket and remarked: "Sold to the woman over there," and as the pale-faced woman walked out, with the little high chair clasped in her arms, and tears streaming down her cheeks, the crowd stood back respectfully, and there was a suspicious moist ure in the eyes of the man who had bid 10 cents. It is reported of a certain col lege in the United States that the one offense which the faculty will not forgive is the offense of lying. A student convicted of this breach is not allowed to stay in the insti tution. It is well known how stern the code at "West Point is in regard to veracity. The Romans in their best days set the highest value on truthful speaking, and the story of Eegulus is familiar to every school boy. It is so mean and contemptible to lie, and the one lie breeds so many other lies to bolster it up, and the habit so saps all ideas of honesty as to lead to other transgressions that, alike in private and public life, the liar should bo made to feel the degra dation of his conduct, and, if pos sible, induced to reform. "With out confidence, human relations would be wholly confused and un stable. Most affairs proceed on faith in the spoken or written word. Every lie, to some extent, disturbs the equipoise. It is ex ceedingly fortunate that, as a rule, candor predominates and iaise- hood is tho exception. Most right minded people early learn to recoil from the stain and stigma ot false speech and dealing, and the community never quite forgives a convicted liar. The nations in which personal veracity is exacted are the strong and responsible na tions. Itwas in the vigorous days of Persia that tho three things in culcated were to ride a horse, shoot a bow and sneak the t'uth. The lying communities are the weak and vicious ones. Talking to a machine: "But I don't understand about this phone graph. How is it done? What is it like?" "Why, it is simply talking to a machine instead of to ears of flesh and blood."
