Just because Mrs. Moore, of Texas, had not SCO -with which to pay a dis charged laborer, he Trent into her field and shot seven mules and a horse that were plowing there, and easily worth $1,200. A t.atw in Norwich. Conn., it is said, has constructed a scarecrow so ladylike and thoroughly fetching that every man who goes by tries to get up a flirtation with it It is taken in the house rainy days. A tin peddler down in Georgia the other day ate all the supper prepared for two families, drank several gallons of milk, then asked for a newspaper and left the spectators hungry, but happy to be rid of him. m The Mexicans are hard at work on the banks of the Rio Grande opposite El Paso. Tex., building wing dams and willow mattresses to prevent their territory from being washed away by the turbulent river. They have lost much in past years in this manner. The great Lick telescope in Cali fornia promises wonderful discoveries in the skies. Professor Holden is very enthusiastic over its revelations, and says that he has had views of tno planets, the stars, the milky way and the npbulis that no other astronomer ever before had; Senator Sherman, in the course of a speech against the fisheries treaty, said ho believed in less than ten years from thi3 time, Canada would be rep resented in the congress of the United States. Thi3 mere statement of a belief by tho eminent Ohio senator has raised quite a breeze. There are few outward indications at the pres ent time of such a state of affairs. Representative "White, of Indi ana, has introduced a bill to establish an inter-state minimum rate of wages in the United States. Every male la borer shall be entitled to not less than 81.50 per day of ten hours; every woman $1.00, and children between 12 and 11 years of age, 75 cents per day. His constituents are daily ex pecting a bill to bo introduced, to regulate by law tho number of chil dren that each family in this country may have. A Coroner's jury at McLeod, in the Canadian northwest, has brought in a curious verdict to the effect that an Indian woman who had suddenly died had come to her death "either from eating sour beans or drinking somo fluid from a bottle given to her by constable Simons." It appoars that the fluid in the bottle was iodine, and constable Simons has been arrested, but it still remains to be determined whether death was caused by the fluid or the beans. Walter Bakko, British agent at Cettinje, Montonegro, roports that there is only one road lit for a wagon in the whole country, and that there is practically no industry, Montene grins scorning any pursuit but that of arms. All the tailors, painters, carpenters, masons and other artisans are foreigners, and all goods except those which are the direct product of agriculture are imported, and are of the commonest description, except the green and white cloth used for men's coats. Senator Cockkeil, of Missouri, recently gave expression to an opin ion in the senate that is considered unjust The cause was a bill to pay two men for a patent device for the use of the government, which had been perfected while these two claim ants were in the employ of the gov ernment Mr. Cockrell opposed the bill, and maintained that whon a per son in the employ of the government invents a useful device, it should be long to the government If Mr. Cock rell's idea ever becomes a law, there will be a large falling off on the num ber of inventions made by govern ment employes. What would be thought of a railroad company that attempted to claim an invention made by one of its employes as its own. aieala CooKed. to Order. Advices received here from Alaska via British Columbia, report the arrest of Yato Hok, chief of the Takon Indians, for murder. From the evidence it ap pears that a woman had gathered cer tain herbs and administered them to a wife of a chief, from the effects of which she died. After the death of the chief's wife, Yato Hok gave or ders that the woman should be put to death, and accordingly a system or torture was inaugurated by heatiDg stones red hot and placing them in her mouth. When life was almost extinct he had her hanged. He also gave orders to have her husbana hanged, and when the latter was suspended in tue air ne mamaged to get his hands in the noose and thereby prevent strangulation. While in this posi tion the chief cut his hand with a knife, but failed to make him re move his grasp. Other Indians in terfered and the poor fellow was freed. The evidence was very con clusive, but upon further investiga tion the fact was brought out that this all occurred in British Colnmbia and the nrisoner was discharged with a severe reprimand. The authorities here maintain that evidence was suf ficient to securo conviction. The Alaska authonties should havp lield the prisoner in custody pending an application from the dominion gov ernment for his extradition, which courtesy they state would have been extended to tho United States au thorities under similar circumstances.
