CzJ Wt gjnHtj gtftomn. ASTORIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY. -ATJC.UST 8. 1S8?. Tiie sum ot S500.000 -will soon be available tor U)lumbia bar improve ment. . BiiAisE is expected to arrive in New York to-day. The programme is to give him a rousing reception. Messrs. Fisk and Brook, the prohi bition nominees, have published their letters ot acceptance. Neither presi dent Cleveland nor Gen. Harrison have yet issued theirs, but they will probably acceptthe nominations when they get ready. When "William Henry Harrison was elected president in l&iO, the elec tions in New York extended over three days and in other states occu pied two days. The system was changed in the various states a year or two afterwards. 'What are youkicking about assess ments for?" is asked. For this rea son. When people come here to in vest, the first question is, not, "what is the valuation?" but, "what is the tax rate?" When told, it paralyzes them. They don't know anything about the low valuation, nor the "in debtedness" trick. All they know is that the tax levy sounds big, and so they get a move on that nine times out of ten starts them to some place where the thing is leveled up more sensibly, and where people who hold their property at "way up" prices are taxed at a proportionate rate. A two per cent tax on a 3,000,000 valuation, gives as much revenue as a four por cent tax on aSl,500,000 valuation, and looks lots better: ' In the Vancouver land district there yet remain vacant 350,000 acres ot un occupied unsurveyed land, 1,865,000 acres of unsurveyed land and 050,000 acres of railroad land. Of the sur veyed government laud about 218,000 acres lie in Klickitat county and the remainder is distributed through Ska mania, Clarke, Cowlitz, Wahkiakum, Pacific, Lewis and Chehalis counties. The land jn Klickitat is chiefly open and suitable for stock and grain. The remaiuiug land lies west of the Cascade range and is chiefly heavily. timbered, a large portion of it being covered with a superb growth ot fir. These lands when cleared are excel lent for agricultural purposes. The railroad lands are withdrawn from market iit present A year ago, with comparative little effort, a cash subsidy ot 150,000 was raised for a proposed railroad Many who subscribed to that sub sidy would equally favor the raising of say 75,000 for the building of a road to the beach. The enterprise is in the direct lino of improvement, advancement and profit, and every thing favors the movement. It is suggested that a road is to bo built from Tanzy Point. Let it be plainly understood right here and now that a road to the beach, or the seaside from Tanzy Point will be no good to Astoria. This ought to be plain enough to every Astorian. It would be a good thing for its pro jectors; the same as the Ilwaco road is a good thing for its projectors, but the Ilwaco road would be as good a help to Astoria as the Tanzy Point road would. No; the talk or thought of a road from Tanzy Point is a silly one lor Astorians to indulge in. The road should be from Astoria. If it bo desired to see the seaside travel pass our doors as at present, the Tanzy Point road would be an excel lent thing; but if Astoria wants to have S100,000 spent here every season that might just as well as not and wonld it there were a road from here, then a road from here is in order. The road from Ilwaco toward Oys terville is a paying investment, a big thing for Pacific county, and Tnn Astohian is glad 6t it, and congratu lates our northern neighbors with having sabe enough to let people spend money with them, and make it easier for them to spend some more. With a magnificent stretch ot ocean beach at our gates, an unrivaled sum mer resort tmd most attractive bath ing place, an undeveloped source of wealth richer than a gold mine within an hour's ride ot us, it is a shame and a slur on the second city in the state to allow this matter to lie year by year dormant, and neglect to take hold ot the opportunities that natnre has placed within our reach. Don't Kxpcriincnt. You cannot afford to waste time in experimenting when your lungs are in danger. Consumption always seems, at iirst, only a cold. Do not permit any dealer to impose upon you with some :lieap imitation of Dr. King's New Dis covery for Consumption," Coughs and Colds, hat be sure you get the genuine. Because he can make more profit lie may tell jou he has something just as good, or just the same. Don't be deceived, but insist upon getting Dr. King's New Discovery, wliieli is guaranteed to give relief in all Throat, Lung and Chest af fections. Trial bottles free at Jno. C Dement's Drug Store. Largo bottles Si The Very Latest. "Oh ! There's a horrid bug on yon r trousers. Brush it off, Jack." A pretty girl and a particularly well dressed youth were walking out Walnut street yesterday, toward 6 o'clock. The nrettv cirl's lace filled with horror at the sight of along and brightly colored caterpillar, which ex- tenaea itseir. lengurvnse on tier com panion's panaloons above the knee. She struck it deftly with her parasol, but the insect clung to the cloth, which was a fine quality of black cas simere. A second poke with the par asol failed to dislodge it. Finally she stopped to pick it off, but it refused to move. "Better leave him alone, sis." laughed the yong man, and upon her asking wnat it was explained as fol fel fol eows: "It's a new wrinkle. You order a jet black pair of trousers with a shine on the cloth. Then, after your tailor has cut the pieces, have a spot marked on tne piece over the left knee, ana get some one to embroider tliere a bug or a butterfly or some such in sect. It's only been out a week, and nooody lias it outside of Philadel phia. Great idea, eh, sis?" "Who embroidered that?" "Fannie: great scheme." His sister curled her lin. "I don't like it," said she. Pltiladelphia News. A Warning. The modes of death's approach are various, and statistics show conclu sively that more persons die from dis eases of the Throat and LungB than any other. It is probable that every one, without exception, receives vast numbers of Tubercle Germs into the system and whore these germs fall npon suitable soil they start iuto life and develop, at first slowly and is shown by n slight tickling sensation in the throat and if allowed to con tinue their ravages they extend to the lungs producing Consumption aud to the head, cousin cr Uatarru. JNow an this is dangerous and if allowed to nroceed will in timo cause death. At the onset you must act with prompt ness; allowing n cold to go without your attention is dangerous aud may lose you your life. As soon as you feel that something is wrong with your Throat, Lungs or Nostrils, ob tain a bottle of Boschee's German Syrup. It will give you immediate relief. Once a senator, always entitled to be called "senator'' is the rule. With a con gressman the title lapses at Hie expira tion of the term, and the man who lias been state senator and then conjres man at the expiration of his term in congress can idapse into "senator." Once a mayor, judge, colonel, major, coroner or alderman, a man is always entitled to uso the appellation of the office. An ex-coroner may be called "doctor" or"eoroner," according to the kind of man lie is. Some men naturally gravitate to Hie one title, and other men incline to the other. Having been coroner, or coroner's assistant, entitles one to be called "doctor"1 unless higher titles supervene. NEW TO-DAY. Notice.
