la a Big Slaughter House.
The market is furnished with
glue from the slaughter house jaw
bones and hoofs; coagulated cattle
blood is used by calico printers
and in the preparation of red h
quor for printers' werk: dried blood
serves to clarify wines and syrups;
neatsfoot oil is another valuable
product from the same source; the
bladders, when dried and prepared,
make useful containers for drug
gists and painters; the oil gall is
used for liniment and many othef
purposes, and tallow, one of the
staple articles of commerce, comes
fiom the rough pieces of fat. JHot
tanks are great levelers, and every
scrap of sinews, loose bones on
small rough pieces is boiled down
to shreds and fragments, and the
liquor, when drawn off and cooled,
produces glue or other valuable
material. The caul and best part
of the fat arerendered into oleo
oil for making artificial batter, and
the pressings give us the stearine
of commerce. These are only a
few of the products resulting from
careful investigation of recent
years. Not a partiole of the ma
terials around the large slaughter
houses is wasted, and the Tesult of
utilizing what was previously
thrown away has brought out a
formidable source of competition
in the glue and fertilizer trades,
which has to bo met by reduced
rates.
