O Hi THE EAUTFALL 0 OBEGON. The average annual rainfall for Oregon, . as a whole t is only 36 inches, of this' 18 inches fall in winter, 8 inches in spring, 2 inches in summer and 8 inches in autumn. During summer the showers arc occasional, but they seldom inter fere with the harvesting season; the autumn rains put the Soil in good condition for plowing and seeding. The winter rams are the most exoessive, and generally occur on about 20 days in a month, but the soil needs the rain. The winter rains assures the never fail ing crops, the water power, springs and wells of the state. The spring rainfall furnishes sufficient moist ure to mature the crops, and causes the. state to have an abund ance of everything. The light summer rains allow the grass to dry up about August, but the au tumn rains give it new life and vigor, so that while the eastern states are covered with snow and ice, Oregon has green fields and verdant lawns the winter through.; and in the early spring, when the snow yet lingers with our eastern people, the flowers here come forth and are in all their glory before the plants there give a sign of their remaining life, after enduring the seventy of a winter. In Oregon toe rams appear to be so timid, that when they are the most ex cessive, they least interfere with agricultural pursuits. The causes of the wet and dry seasons in Ore gon are dne to the tender winds. When the northwest wind com mences in summer, then rain may no longer bo expected, and when thejT retire to the southwest trade in fall, the rainy season starts in again. By the term "rainy sea son," it must not be inferred that the rain is perpetual, or nearly so, during that time. The term is employed only in contrast with tbo dry season, and it implies the pos sibility rather than the actual occurrence of rain. Above has been given the aver age rainfall of Oregon as a whole. Now it should bo remembered that along the immediate coast, and es pecially so at the ,mouth of the Columbia river, the rainfall is double that which occurs in the interior valleys some 20 to 100 miles distant; and the rainfall of eastern Oregon is about one-half that of the interior valleys. Along the coast from 62 to 78 inches falls annually. In the Willamette val ley from 42 to 56 inches 'falls an nually. In the ITmpqua valley 35 inches. In the Rogue river valley, Klamath and Lake counties, and on the plateau, cast of the Cascade range of mountains, known as eastern Oregon from, 13 to 25 inches falls annually. The rainfall in Oregon, (as well as in Califor nia and Washington Ter.,) in creases from south to north. Rain falls from 100 days sf Ashland, to 166, days at .Portland in a year. The average for the state would be about 125 days. Ayer's Sarsaparilla cures liver complaint,' rheumatism, and all diseases of the blood. . Andrew Carnegie's profit-sharing scheme with his 3,500 em ployes at the steel works at Bradn dock, Penn., has gone into effect. The men .have fbrmalby elected an accountant, to be.paid by Mr. Car negie for examining the firm's books and making a monthly divi: siorr of the assets. Ayer's PiJls promptly relieve stomach . troubles, correct foul breath and an unpleasant taste, and cure constipation. . An aged couple in Massachu setts, recently celebrated 'the seventy-third auniversary of their marriage. . They are still residing on the same farm on which, they established their home on their wedding day. Nearly twelve thousand immi arrived at Halifax during the 'first six months of this" year. This is 2,000 more than the whole num ber whioh arrived last year, and they were of a much better class. It is estimated that the grass crop of Kansas this year will pay the interest on he entire1 farm mortgage indebtedness of the state and have a surplus sufficient to pay more than half of all the taxes. Should Keep Her Half Still. A loving young busband of this city possesses a pretty young wife and a sweet little baby who is as good as he can be in the daytime, but who has a penchant for making the m dnight air resound with his cries. The dear little thing was giving his usual concert several nights ago. His audience was tired out. The "happy father" was tifing hard to persuade the old said man to fill his eyes and transport him to the land of Nod. Still fie baby yelled. "Dearest," growled this loving husband, "hadn't you better get up and. walk around the room and get your baby quiet?" "iff baby," responded "Dear est;" "well, I think about one half of it is yours!" "Oh, I don't care how much noise my half makes," answered the villain. "You just keep your half still." Cincinnati Times.
