well covered with a new growth of hair.

Chancey M. Depew tells this
funnv story as illustrative of his re

When I stood up before tho con
vention to-night I thought of an
old classmate of mine who has be
come famous as a divine. He
began preaching in a little Congre
gational church, and over the way
was a little Spiriualistic commu
nity which would go off and have
Spiriualistic revelations. Then
the pastor would abase everybody
else. The pastor, a man named
Robinson, died one day. He was
a man who had been bred a puritan
and some of his friends thought he
ought to be buried in a puritan
way. They went to my classmate
and asked him to conduct the
funeral service, ne made a few
remarks upon the virtues of the
deceased what few he had and
sang a little hymn after a fashion
aud prayed. Just after the prayer
his widow got up and said that tho
spirit of her husband was there,
and then she began lo abuse the
preacher, and the prayer, and the
hymn; and the friends of the dead
man who had invited my friend to
preach the funeral sermon went to
hini and said he must not think
anything about it; tiut, though it
was contrary to the orditiHiy pro
prieties, yet it was not the widow
who was doing it, but it was her
husband's spirit. My friend re
plied that he was not at all hurl;
lie did not feel hard toward any
body, but still it was a peculiir
experience. -lie said that in fif
teen years of funerals it was the
first time he had ever been sassed
by a corpse. That is about my
relation to the convention this
afternoon
