Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at Boss opera house to-night Seats for to-nicht'a performance can be had at the New York Novelty Store. The divorce business at this session of court seems to be the principal feature. The Hindoo here the other day is Hindoocing Seattleites to join the salvation army. The San Francisco weather clerk telegraphs that the indications favor rain in this locality. It does look kind o' damp. The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde com pany who play here to-night, will ar rive on the morning boat. They leave Fiiday morning for Seattle. The British bark Kitty, 803. C2 days from Hong Kong, and the Brit ish ship King Cedric, 1490, IS days from San Diego, are outside, with pilots aboard. A class in shorthand will be started on Tursday evening, Juno 21, at the typewriting office; tlioso desir ing to take lessons can obtain all particulars there. The board of directors of school district No. one had a meeting yes terday at which all the present corps of teachers were reelected except Prof. W. E. Johnson and Miss Helen Dickinson. Two dead bodies' wero found on Sand Island yesterday, sad memories of last week's stormy weather. Thus far they have not been identified, but an effort will be made in that di rection to-day. An organ, an organ grinder, and a monkey are going around the streets. The organ is worth 175: the monkey is worth 375; the grinder is worth S27.000! The outfit comes from San Francisco and is (raveling for its health, regardless of expense. The little steamer Hassalo, which recently ran the rapids in such fine shape, is off for the Sound so soon as captain Anderson considers the bar smooth enough to cross. She lies at the O. B. & N. dock and is rigged for outside seas. She flies a crimson banner at her fore peak. The stateroom capacity of the It. R. Thompson has been increased, it being now 114 and the general arrangement has been changed in a manner that resembles a Pullman car. Travel between here and Portland, is, if anything increasing, and all the boats seem to have their share of tho business. The dead body reported in yester day s Astobian as having been founa at McKenzie's head last Saturday, and given temporary burial, proves to be the remains of Henry Mattson, who was drowned outside the bar in his fishing boat on the 23rd of last month. The remains will be disin terred, and will be brought over for burial to-morrow. Col. Geo. Hunter has placed the sale of his book "Reminiscences of an old Timer," in the hands of Eiggs & Tomlinson of Battle Creek, Mich., and is going on to Washington to try and secure recognition by congress or the claims ot the wiaows ana or phans of those who fell fishting in the Indian war of this state and Washington territory. There was a good deal of interest manifested yesterday in the proceed ings of the Bepublican convention, ana crowds surrounded tne ouiieiin board on which Mr. Henderson so promptly displayed tho doings of the Chicago delegates. On the outside page The Astobian this morning pre sents the portrait and biography of the favorite candidate of a good many Astorians. At 3:30 vesterday afternoon a cloud 7,309x18,937 yards, which had been loafing lazily off Tillamook, was seized by an ocean zephyr and hurled bodily over the town. Jnst as it was passing it broke, and for fifteen min utes it seemed as if a waterspout were above and around. Then the sun shone out. and the blue Columbia glittered in the bright sunlight, and over in Washington territory the ever greens were hid in a dark shroud of somber mist The chief topic in sporting circles yesterday afternoon was the fight on the hillside between W. P. Ryan and Thos. Dealey, on which S320 was bet between tho former and Mr. Dealey's backer and second. The ficht was short, sharp and decisive, Mr. Byan breaking a knncklo and Mr, Dealey's face suffering some damage, and tho wounded honor of each being satis fied, they replaced their outer gar ments and returned. Salmon is being shipped east over land, in large quantities; it is going that way about as fast as packed; very little has gone or is going to San Francisco; so far not over L800 eases has been sent. 'But little is expected to go to England; the Gutting rftf jattg Packing Vo. Das soia o,wu cases on English account, John A. Devlin, 10, 000; the Aberdeen Packing Co., 5,000; Wm,D. Smith, about 5,000; probably a part of a cargo amounting to 25.000 cases will go foreign, from the Colum bia this year quite a difference from former years, when ship after ship loaded here, each vessel taking from 45,000 to 70,000 cases. Almost daily there is received on the O. E. & N. dock here from up river, salmon for canning which is positively unfit for food, and which is criminal to put up. The attention of the fish commissioners and the health officer is directed to this mat ter. If they have no jurisdiction in the matter it is hard to say who has. It is such stuff as that that brings Columbia river salmon into disrepute, and tho many canners who pack none but pure fresh fish owo it to them selves to inquire into the matter and place the responsibility whereitbe longs. There was one mess that came down yesterday, a putrescent mass, the tails dropping off and the bodies alive with maggots, the stink pervading the building. This rotten stuff is principally blue backs from traps away up the river, and shonld be dumped overboard. The lale rains have caused the Clackamas river to rise considerably, says the OreaonianjmA. the hundreds of salmon in the pool at the hatchery seemed to be excited by the addition al volume of water pouring down and are perfectly wild to get away, past the weir and up to the places where they wero hatched, in the gravel bed3 in tho deep pools at tho headwaters of the river, They crowd and push against the slats or the weir, and seem determined to force their way through. When it is considered that they would bo. bruised and banged about and utterly exhausted and worn out in their passage up the swift rocky stream, it is seen that they are much better off where they are having plenty of sea room to which they can retire when they get tired of butting their noses against tho weir. The taking of spawn will commence some time next month. The salmon, after being used, should be marked r.nd turned out to see whether any of them will come back next year or not. Before Justice Cleveland yesterday appeared Chris. Evenson, proprietor of the Central restaurant, charged with assault ami battery by Chas. Anderson. The testimony elicited the facts that Anderson and his boat puller went into Mr. Evenson's res taurant and ordered a Cue breakfast, and going to the desk tendered fifty cents. They were told the bill was S1.25, and said they could get a meal for 25 cents. They wero told they could get a meal there for25 cents, but not such an elaborate breakfast as they had just enjoyed. Continu ing to refuso to pay, Anderson tried to push tho proprietor aside and go out, but was unsuccessful, and in the scuffle that ensued got decidedly the worst of it, he being flung out of the house, and his hat after him. Upon the conclusion of the testimony district attorney Watson asked the court to instruct the jury to bring in a verdict of not guilty, which was done, and tho costs were assessed on tho complaining witness, who will have the pleasure of paying about 25 for his breakfast. Harris of the life saving station at Ft Canby, has re ceived from the government a section of bounty and back-pay amounting to 180. In 1863, tho darkest period in the nation's existence, Capt. Harris then but a lad of sixteen years re sponded to president Lincoln's call for men, was mustered in and shared the varying fortunes of the army of the Potomac until the close ot the war. BACK FROM SACRAMENTO. What An Astbrian Saw While Away. And Heard Chief of Police Barry returned yes terday from Sacramento, Cal., whither he had been called by a telegram an nouncing the death of hip father, and whose funeral he nttended while there. He says Sacramento has grown more in the past fivo years than in the twenty years preceding. The weather there is dry and warm. Everybody i3 talking polities', and every Bepublican ho met sings only one song; "Blaine, Blaine, Blaine, Blaine," Sherman is too cold, too grand, gloomy and pecu liar for the Californians, and they charge Gresham with being a Know Nothing, whatever that is. Blaine is the California favorite, and should he get the nomination they wouldn't get through hurrahing down there till after they had given him 25,000 majority. RAILROAD TALK. Sacramento is the great railroad headquarters in California, It was in a modest little hardware store, "Hunt ington, Hopkins & Co., 54 K street," that the idea ot the Central Pacific railroad originated, and it is in Sac ramento that the Southern Pacific which has just assumed control of its "Oregon lines," has its headquarters. While talking with some of the railroad men there Chief Barry heard that Astoria and the mouth of the Columbia were prominent in the minds of the managers, and that the next move on the programme was the building of a road from Portland to Rainier, from there almost due west through the body of timber south of We3tport and on to Astoria. PORTTjAND politics. Barry got to Portland Monday afternoon, and there being an elec tion in that city for mayor and coun cilmen, though he is not much inter ested in politics and was never known to take an active part in political contests, yet he went around to see how the thing was going. He had not got within one hundred yards of the polling place, when he was warmly greeted by a prominent local striker who sized him up as some one from over yonder, and not having the faintest idea of who he was, grabbed him by the arm and said: "Look here young fellah, its just worth 2 to you to vote this ticket. Trot right along now, slap her in nnd comeback to me for your coin. I'll be here, betcher life." Such an heretofore unheard of proposition surprised our worthy chief, who ceasing to wonder at what he had heard of Portland's wicked ness, told the bold bad man that he wasn't selling his vote; that he wasn't that kind of a man, and besides an other man around tho corner had offered him 4, which ho had refused, not deeming it enough. "Well, you fellahs are getting damned high priced, all of a sudden," said the trafficker in honest American suf frages, "but we've got to have votes, and here's a 5 piece for you after you've voted." At this juncture a fire department official, well-known in Aatoria, caught his indiscreet confederate by the shoulders and turning him squarely round, whispered. "You are a chump: that's Win Barry, the Astoria chief of police. An Explanation. What is this "nervous trouble" with which so many seem now to be af flic ted? If you will remember a few years ago the word Malaria was Com paratively unknown, to-day it is ;is common as any word in tho English language, yet this word oovers only the meaning of another word used by our forefathers in times past So it is with nervous diseases, as they and Malaria are intended to cover what our grandfathers called Billiousness, and all are caused by tronbles that arise from a diseased condition of the Liver which in performing its func tions finding it cannot disposo of the bile through the ordinary channel is compelled to pass it off through the system, causing nervous troubles, Malaria, Billions Fever, etc. You who are suffering can well appreciate a euro. We recommend Green's Au gust Flower. Its cures are mar velous. For the Coast Trade. The steamer Alliance, recently pur chased by the Portland & Coast Steamship Company, left San Fran cisco Saturday last at i p.m., with a full cargo' of salt and pig-iron, for this city. She should arrive here about Wednesday. As soon as sue is dis charged she will be put in the hands of the carpenters to have her cabins arranged for passengers, and when she is painted she will bo ready for business. It is expected that she will sail on her first trip about July 1. uregoman, iu. Electric Bitters. This remedy is becoming so well known and so popular as to need no snecial mention.
