ASTOBIA. OREGON:
WEDNESDAY JUNE" 20. 18S8.
Pbesidest OiiEVEland will lie offi
cially notified of his nomination by
the St. Louis convention next Tues
day. Op the 820 delegates to the Repub
lican national convention of 1881,
there are but 93 in the convention of
820 delegates in '88. The rest are
"new men."
Jay Gould announces that he will
spend one million dollars to beat
Gresham if he is nominated. That's
why they love him for the enemies
that he has made.
JnDQETAYLOB,yesterday, very prop
erly refused the application of two
men to become citizens, on the ground
that they were unfit.by reason of their
ignorance of American institutions.
In general the privilege of American
citizenship is too lightly bestowed"
It is made so easy to be an American
naturalized citizen, that any one de
sirous of the honor should at least
make effort to prove himself partially
worthy of the dignity. If Judge Tay
lor's action were more widely observ
ed it would have a beneficial effect, in
this directiou.
And still Blaine's name is used to
conjure with at Chicago. The pres
ent situation is a dramatic one.
Blaine has always been a man of dra
matic act and consequence. "What
more dramatic climax to a career
packed with thrilling incident than
the refusal or an honor that men
struggle and delve, and scheme, and
agonize, and barter, and slave for,
and which might have como without
the putting out of his hand; and
while the fourth of the great conven
tions where his name and personality
are preeminent is being held he will
be gloriously driving over the Scot
tish heath on the top of a tally-ho,
content, healthy, happy and at peace.
The Washington Journal (Ger
man) speaking of the proposed mar
riage of emperor Frederick's daughter
and Alexander Battenberg, says:
Aside "from political complications,
the proposed marriage also leads to
interesting complications in the fam
ily relations. Beatrice, youngest
daughter of queen Victoria, is married
to Alexander's brother, Henry Batten
berg. The German emperor's daugh
ter is a nieco of this couple, for her
mother, the empress, is a sister of
Beatrice. Alexander is therefore,
already, by" marriage, uncle of his
prospective bride, brother-in-law of
Beatrice, her aunt, and as liusband jot
the latter's niece, would becomo his
own nephew.

THE 0EKJAG0 CONVENTION.
Preliminary Organization; Speeches.
Chicago, June 19 1130. The con
vention has been called to erder:
chairman B. F. Jones in his speech
emphatically favors protection, and
says the candidate of the convention
and its platform should bo the em
bodiment of this spirit.
12:10 p. ii. The hall is almost full.
The entrance of Gen. Jno. C. Fre
mont was greeted with cheers. (Gen.
Fremont was the first candidate of
thcKopublican party in 185G.)
1230 p. m. Chairman Jones intro
duced temporary chairman Thurston
of Nebraska, who was greeted with
applause.
A Kansas delegate announces that
the iiansas delegation is not respon
sible lor tho election o Thurston and
proposes Warren of Missouri;
(Hisses.)
Thurston began his speech and al
most immediately made a statement
that Blame was denied its privilege
01 supporting him in this convention.
This was greeted with cries of "No!
Nof' and applause from the galleries.
Thurston's speech is punctuated
with applause. His reference to the
leaders of 'Si was greeted with wild
cheere. He then mentioned the can
didates in turn and spoke of the Re
publican party as a party of protec
tion. Wild applause greeted his men
tion of the Chinese question. He
said the foreign policy of the present
administration was such as to please
every coward. He then said wo dare
not commit the political disobedience
to Blaine's will, and referred to the
Democratic straddle of the tariff
question and civil service reform
amid laughter and applause. The
speaker said that the great issue of
the coming campaign is the tariff.
A great army will rise to trample out
forever the pernicious doctrine of
free trade.
Thurston closed his speech amid
great demonstrations of applause and
Howe of Michigan, presented to the
chairman a gavel made of wood of
the oak treo under which tho Repub
lican party organized, in Jackson,
Michigan.
On motion of Hallowell, of Kansas,
a resolution of sympathy with Gen.
Phil Sheridan was adopted. The re
quest of a deputation of tho Grand
army of the Republic for two thous
and tickets, evoked discussion of
the soldier question by Taft of South
Carolina, Butler and Worth of Ohio
arid Lewis ot Kansas: By unanimous
consent the question was referred to
the national committee.
The call of states was dispensed
with, the names being sent to the
chairman.
Nebraska is now presenting Gen.
Fremont to the convention amid
much enthusiasm.
Fremont in a speech predicts vic
tory under the banner of protection
of American industries.
Fred Donglass has been called' on
and addresses the convention, briefly,
expressing thanks for the welcome.
Hoar, of Massachusetts, is tho next
speaker. Of the Virginia dispute ho
says Mahone and his colleagues un
der the rulings of parliamentary
law cannot vote on their own
case. Wise ot Virginia makes a
strong protest against Mahone being
put on the committee on credentials
to pass on his own credentials.
Many delegates are leaving the con
vention which will probably adjourn
in a fow minutes. Tho committee
will meet after adjournment of the
convention. It has been decided
that the contesting delegations are to
send their credentials to tho com
mittee without debate. The chair
man decides the debate oat of order.
Mahone. of Virginia, then took the
platform to make a plea for his dele
gation, when Stephenson of Minne
sota, moved that no committeeman
be allowed from any stato or terri
tory sending contested delegations.
330 p. m. The convention has ad
journed to noon, to-morrow.

PROBABLY. FATAL.
Last night John McDonald met
with what may prove to be a fatal
accident at a lodging house, corner of
Fifth and Washington streets.
While attempting to throw n basin
of water upon some boys underneath
with whom he was skylarking, he lost
his balance and fell into tho court.
He struck on a fence and sustained
very serious internal injuries.
STATE VS. M'aiNN.
In tho police court to-day Henry
McGinn withdrew his plea of not
guilty and substituted a plea of
guilty to assault and battery upon
ltev. Ezra Haskell. Judgo Dement
imposed a fine of ten dollars upon
tho defendant. In making his sen
tence the conrt took occasion to re
mark that as neither complainant nor
accused was in the habit of engaging
in street quarrels and were both gen
tlemen and that while the assault was
unjustified there had been considera
ble aggravation before tho affair took
place which would naturally tend to
create excitement in the defendant,
the court felt justified in imposing
tho smallest fine allowed by law.
CHARGED WITH E1IBEZZELMENT.
G.W.Emory, a young man who has
been employed as book keeper for tho
firm of Dayton & Wall, has been ar
rested charged with embezzelment.
The books of the firm have been par
tially exported and it is alleged that
so far Emery's shortage foots up
four thousand dollars. In tho police
conrt to-day Emery waived examina
tion and that he be placed under four
thousand dollars bonds to answer bo
fore the grand jury.
