Prince Bistnurck, says a Paris
correspondent of the Chicago Tri
ftuue, refers to the work of the
press as "nothing but "printers' ink
spread on paper." But no man
reads the papers more diligently
than he. Besides personally read
ing every dav n dozen or more of
the leadinrr journals from various
European capitals, he keeps a r-taii'i
nf from four to m clerks con
stantly at woik, like the evclmniri
editors i'i a newspaper office, m-.ui-iniiir
tlie columns of humlreiis and
perh.ips thousands of papers from
all parts of the world, stud flipping
out every item that em pirSMiily
be of interest to him. These clip
pings, with the name-, and dates of
the papers from winch they are
taken, are carefully classified and
indexed and pasted in enormous
scrap-books. These volumes form
a conspicuous feature in the Chan
cellor's private library. There is
one lettered on the back "Social
ism," another" France Millitary."
another "France Civil," another
"Russia," another Culturkampf,"
and so on. Each volume is sub
divided into chapters, and all so
carefu'ly indexed that the states
man can in a moment turn to what
has been said by any particular
paper on any particular subject.
This vast encyclopedia is made
use of in manv ways. I remem
ber a gentleman from Chicago
tellini; me a few years ago a cu
rious incident of his visit to
Berlin. He called on Prince Bis
marck armed with a note of intro
duction from the German minister
at Washington. The Prince re
ceived him cordially, and after a
few general remarks, said: "I
see that your Chicago papers are
pitching into me on the pork ques
lion." And then he went on to
quote the exact language the vari
011s papers used, and replied to
their arguments. "lie told mc,"
said the gentleman, "more about
the Chicago papers and the pork
packing industries than T knew
myscll, though 1 have lived there
all my life. And before I left in
came congressman from Cantor
nia, and the Prince at once turned
on him with a lot of talk about the
silver question and what the Pa
eiiic Coast newspapers were say
ing about it." That is one of the
secrets of prince Bismarck's great
ness.

There is said to be almost a con
tinuous line ot glacers from the
head of Glacier bay to Copper
river, Alaska, a distance of about
JHX) miles. This wall of ice fol
lows the crest ot the Coast ranrje,
stretching its arms down nearly
even canyon and in many places
debouching sheer into the sea.
At the head of Glacier bay is an
icy waste of thousands of acres,
and at times upon its glassy sur
