A morning paper prints the follow ing, Washington special: The St. Louis convention is expected to be the shortest on record. No one expects it will last more than two days. The programme has all been outlined, and the only thing fpr the convention to do is to endorse it. The chairman will be congressman Collins, of Boston. The chairman of the commiteo on resolutions will be "William R. Morrison of Illinois. The name of the president will be presented to the convention by Samuel Lockwood of Buffalo, who nomi nated him for sheriff, for governor, and for president. There will be four candidates presented lor the vice-presidency; namely: Allen G. Thurman, John C. Black, Isaak P. Gray and Roger Q. Mills. "William L. Scott will be chairman of the national convention. Mr. Scott will carry to St. Louis with him several type-written copies of the platform to bo adopted, which have been prepared in consulta tion with the president by leading democrats here. It is not ex pected that the platform will be altered in auy essential fact after its arrival in St. Louis. The plat form is an echo of the president's message. For the first time the Democrats come out squarely in favor of revision of tho tariff, re duction of revenues, and entire re moval of the duties from the necessaries of life. Free wool, cheap iron and cheap wood is the pronunciamento. It is the Mills bill in a few paragraphs. When the enterprising man gets up to the gates of eternity, the keeper will probably ask: "Where arc you from, and what did you do to advance your neigh borhood and your neighbors? And if the candidate has done well, he will be shown into a beau-tifurarkwbrebeair-is-Mjdor-ous with the perpetually bloom ing flowers, sonorous with the songs of maidens who never get to be over sixteen years of age, gladdened by the music of falling waters and singing birds, and there all the conditions are the quintessence of harmony. "When the man who has not been enter prising presents himself, he "ill be assigned to a high hill around which sweep the blizzards of winter and the sirroccos of sum mer. The vegetation will consist of greasebush, chaparrel and cac tus; the living thing ind creeping things will be horned toads, coyo tes, devil-fish, vultures and tooth less old women. Tho water will be alkaline; and all nature will be a monstrosity. From that hilltop, he must eternally look over into paradise. No conclusion was reached, but we think a barbed wire fence six; feet high, minus gates, surround ing the farm would solve tho nrnh- lem. Spofford, Henry Villard's secretary, denies that there is any truth in the dispatch from Berlin, stating that Villard is interested in fitting out a Ger man expedition to the south pole. He said Villard was not in Berlin, but at Carlsbad for his health, and further that all his interests center in this country. He is not inter ested in any German undertaking, let alone such a scheme as stated in the dispatch. The taint of scrofula in your Blood can be wholly eradicated by Ayer's Sarsaparilla. Presidential Possibilities. "Washington June 1. The president will iave the news di rect from the national democratic convention. Arrangements are being perfected for a special wire connection frow the White house to St. Louis. Col. Lamont says the president has no preference as to who will bojpiaced on the tick et with him, and will be entirely satisfied with! "the convention's action. It is stated tnat president Cleve land's cabinet, Should ho be so for tunate as to stfeceed himself, will receive considerable recasting after the 4th of Marph next. Secretary "Whitney and attorney-general Garland makejno secret of the fact, that uporLthat date it is their intention to retire to private life. Both men arelawyers, and both retire to pratice their profession. So far as "Whitney is concerned, this step is rendered necessary by the condition or his health. Gar land gives no other reason for his retirement from the cabinet than a surfeit of official honors. He will open a law office at Little Rock, Arkansas. 3 Melancholy or Despondency.
