Advices from Bugby, between Clif ton and Westport, are to the effect that James Cusiok, of Knappa, has succeeded in opening np an excel lent quarry at that point, and one that the report states can furnish suitable and sufficient rock for the Fort Stevens jetty. There was a man brought down from a logging camp near Knappa on yesterday afternoon's boat who was badly hurt. While cutting a vine maple, a limb struck him in the face and stunned him, and the ax falling from his nerveless grasp imbedded itself in his breast, inflicting a ghast ly wound. He was taken to the hos pital and may recover. The crew of the British ship Silver dale, lumber laden, from Port Discov ory for Melbourne, mutinied after the vessel sailed. She returned and anchored near Flattery rocks Wednes day, a tug and assistance were tele graphed for, and a crew was sent down on the tug Biz to quell the diffi culty. The tug Pioneer went down bIbo and towed the vessel back, last Wednesday afternoon. There were five bids received by colleotor Hobson for the repairs and improvements to the custom house grounds. The .bids range from 82,800 to S4.500. Mr. Hobson has forwarded the bids to Washington for official action thereon. While the department is about it there are other improvements and repairs im peratively needed. The root leaks and the rain is rotting the sandstone, There Bhould be another story built on, and a new roof placed; unless that is done the delay will cause nec essary more extensive repairs further on. Beside, when the earth is filled up three feet higher than at present, the building will present a very squat appearance, and symmetry, no less than economy, calls for a new roof. PERSONAL MENTION. Why The Location Was Changed From Portland to Seattle, Mr. Edward Holman, who was engaged in collecting a fund for prizes for the firemen's tournament, yesterday received the following dispatch from Mr. F. L, Parker, secretary of tho Firemen's Asso ciatien: Asioeia May SO. Have changed tournament to Seattle. Particulars by mail. Mr. Holman knew nothing more about tho matter. He said all he bed to do was to return their money to people who had paid their subscriptions to the fund. it is tnougnt mat tnere is some collu sion between the official? of the Fire men's Association at Astoria and some one at Seattle. The alleged exouse of fered that Portland had not raised the amount required by a certain date is considered too thin. There is plenty of time before the tournament comes oil to raisa all the money required. No special effort has been made to collect a fund for this purpose as yet. There were so many collections being made for different purposes that it was thought best to wait a little in this matter. Our citizens have been subscribine half a million for a hotel, $150,000 for the Industrial Fair $l,(j0O for the relief of the sufferers at Uoldendale, W. T., a fund for the Mem orial day celebration and another for the Pioneer reunion. All these oome off be fore the firemen's tournament and all have been provided for and so would the firemen, President Jos. J. Meagher of the Vol nnteer Firemen's Association of this city has received no notification of the tournament being removed, and the members of the association say they don't know who has authority to make any such announcement. The directors of the state Firemen's Association placed the matter of making arrange nents for the tournament in the hands of the Volunteer Firemen's Association here, and the appointing of the com mittees in the hands of tho president Before any change can be made there will have to bo some action on tho part of those authorized to make a chango. Oregonian, May 31. Referring to tho above. Frank L. Parker, the secretary of the associa tion, was interviewd. Thefollowmci3 111s statement: "When the board of directors met in Portland last September, state ments were made by members of the Volunteer Firemen's Association that Portland would rniso for tourna ment purposes 3,000. On those grounds was Portland offered tho tournament; 'twas set for September, 1888. Later tho Volunteer Associa tion was placed in control of tho affairs nnd wanted to change to June, and guaranteed within ten days to raise the purse to S1.000. This time they were granted. But the board in subsequent session instructed me as secretary that in caso the 31,000 was not raised in the ten days to correspond with Seattle and see what she would do toward having the tournament there, and if bIio would put up 82,000. On nnything less than 1,000 we could not get any com peting teams, as they cannot come unless there is n show for them to make nt least traveling expenses. "Wlien the ten days were un tho finance committee were communi cated with as to tho funds raised and they answered $120. ''In compliance with the instructions of the board I wired Seattle what she would do, and answer came that in ten minutes fe'.J,UUU was raised. Hence the change. "Tne change was not made to throw slurs at the Portland Volunteer As sociation, but the slur is on Portland for her penurious habits." Tne above are the omcial facts, it is evident that there was no desire on the part of those in charge, other than the very proper realization of the fact that they would place them selves in a ridiculous position to an nounce prizes and ability to award them to successful contestants, till they knew positively where tho money was coming from. A nice fix, indeed, they would be in, to have me winning teams come up smiling for the coin they won, and have to say "Boys, we're real sorry, but Portland didn t raise the money, and the fact is we can't pay you." This is what tho directors would risk had they given Portland the tournament; this risk they avoided by locating it at Seattle, where the money is already hung up, and as sured, and while Astoria regrets that there should be any misunderstand ing about it, it certainly seems that in place of being blamed, and "collu sion" suggested, the directors deserve praise for looking out so carefully for the interests of the association. They don't care a continental in the matter beyond doing what they can for the association, and guarding its inter ests. That's what they're for. 1 Their Business Booming. An Explanation. Whnt is this "nervous trouble" with which so many seem now to be nf- llictedr If you will remember a few j ears ago the word Malaria was com paratively unknown, to-day it is as common ns any word in the English language, yet this word covers only tho meaning of another word used by our forefathers in times past. So it is with nervous diseases, as they and Malaria aro intended to cover what our grandfathers called Billiousness, and all are caused by troubles that arise from a diseased condition of the Liver which in performing its func tions finding it cannot dispose of the bilo through the ordinary channel is compelled to pass it off through the system, causing nervous troubles, Malaria, Billions Fever, etc. You who are suffering can well appreciate a cure. We recommend Green's Au gust Flower. Its cures are mar velous. Some Remarks From The South. Who will buy the southern farm or's cotton it the factories are closed through this tariff reform legislation? Operatives in Europe average 37$ cents n day and think they live well if they have meat once a week, on Sundays. Can American workmen stand this sort of thing?
