A COMPLAINT PEOM NEHALEM.
Nehalest, Or., May 29, 1858.
Editoe Asterian: On the
north fork of Nebalem river there
are about twenty families now,
and room for many more; and they
are coming. Five years ago we
got a postoffice established here,
and called it Onion Peak. Two
or three months ago the office was
discontinued, but why and by
whom we do not know; certainly
not by these residents, for tney
unanimously want it. We sup
pose not by the department on its
own or government account, for
this office should not have been
any expense, as the mail carrier
traveled right through the door
yard of the postmistress. These
twenty settlers now have to go
from five to twenty miles to get
their mail, and some of them can't
go to the postoffice and return the
some day; and whose work is it?
Is it democratic economy, or the
the work of some one with an axe
to grind? But worse still! We
are informed that our mail route
from Seaside to Tillamook or Hob-
sonville, whicb has been running,
(and that a necessity) for nearly a
score of years is discontinued, too.
Why? For economy? It dont
cost one-half as much now as it
did fifteen years ago when there
was "not one-halt as many to be ac
commodated by it. Is it the work
of the post office department on
its own responsibility.'' It so we
must have a progressive depart
ment. We have heard many com
plaints about our mail service
from all over the country within
the last year or two, but thought
them political twaddle, yet now it
is brought home to us. But may
be this is the work of some Clat
sop county man who has a point
to train. We hope not.
If this route is discontinued,
and all mail matter for the north
has to go around by north Yam
hill and Portland, it will then take
two weeks for us to get a return
communication from our natural
trading point, Astoria. This will
drive our trade to Portland or
San Francisco. We will also
have to look to those points for
our newspapers. Whosevor work
this is, we of north Nehalem wish
to enter our earnest protest and
growl. Settler.
Sleeplessness.
Narcotics and sedatives murder sleep ;
the unnatural stupor is soon followed
by ill effects. Simmons Liver Regula
tor removos the cause of restlessness and
sleeplessness by regulating the bowels,
by establishing good digestion and by
quieting the nerves.
faI have been a great sufferer from
dyspepsia and loss of sleep. As soon as
1 feel the least nervous I take a dose of
Simmons Liver Regulator, and sleep all
night." Mns,R. Bbyast.

The Mugwumps in Politics.
Like hay fever, it is an aristo
cratic malady, and is chiefly affec
ted by Republicans who condemn
both parties and vote the Demo
cratic ticket. A large number of
Democrats voted for Mr. Blaine in
IS84. and the real mugwumps
who left the Republican party to
uphold civil service reform have
never quite expressed the depth
of their contempt for those traitor
ous Blaine Democrats- The two
sorts of desertion were very differ,
ent. The Republicans who re
fused to vote for Mr. Blaine were
the best men in their party, for
they themselves have tola us so.
But the Democrats who declined
to support Mr.Cleveland were the
worst element in their party. This
information is from the same
source as the other, and is equally
authentic.
Italy is growing to a great ex
tent. About ten thousand miles
of railroad are a recent addition,
whicb indicates great growth.
Despite the great number who
have emigrated (fully 300,000 to
the United States and about 1,
000,000 to South America), there
is still a population of 30,000,000,
who live and seem to prosper in a
land smaller in extent than the
state of California.
