In a recent address before the Yale Kent club, at New Haven, the vener able David Dudley Field said: "An other of the anomalies which should be eliminated from our legal system is the distinction between sealed and unsealed instruments. Can anybody give a reason for this distinction, ex cept the history one that seals were used when most men were unable to write? Now, when most men do write, why use the seal? Or if the seal is used, why give it a significance and importance not given to the writing? I find in your revised statues a pro vision that a deed of real property must have a seal and two witnesses at the least You cannot transfer to your neighbor a cabin for a hundred dollars without these ceremonials; but you may transfer to him a mill ion dollars' worth of railway stock by a simple signature, without seal or witness. "Upon a sealed instru ment you may bring suit within seven years; but if the seal is wanting, you must sue within six years. Is it a reason why these anomalies should be retained in the valley of the Con necticticut, because they come from the valley of the Thames?" If Blaine refused to say anything from the time he landed in Europe he would be nominated by acclama- mation at Chicago. He had no motive in writing the Florence letter but to avoid the candidacy drifting to him. The declination was in stronger terms than used by George Washington in declining to bo a candidate for a third term of the presidency. He gave ad ditional evidence of sincerity in taking the precaution to prevent the deten tion of the letter by personal friends and sent the communication to the chairman of the Republican national executive committee and made it the official duty of that gentleman to give it to the country. There is due in this connection the highest consider ation for Mr. Sherman, who author ized that assurances could be given that if Blaine thonght the '84 raco should be run over again, he (Sher man) would acquiesce and give him his cordial support, peremptorily declining to be a candidate at Chi caeo. The Republican majority is not called upon to stand back and see the factions in several states win be cause the leader so long followed has made his bow and does not want to be followed. Blaine's retirement did not involve the retirement of his friends; on the contrary, it asserted their supremacy at Chicago. They have before them the questions that were on Blaine's mind. Honor him by accepting his decision. In the earlier years of the century the population of the United States was mostly composed of the families of farmers. Good society in those days had many customs that are now forgotten. The church was the main dependence for bringing people to gether, and was, perhaps, a more dig nified institution than it is now. Amusement for the people had to be invented to suit local conditions, Thus they had "apple bees," "quilt ing parties," "com-huskings," "bush whacks" and various other devices for bringing young people together. "Work was mingled with play in a wajr to make each guest put in enough manual labor to pay his or her share of the expenses for the "pies and cakes" consumed. There are many thousands of people now living, whose heads are not very gray, who were "brought up" to enjoy such amusement Not long ago a Maine village housewife, keen ot wit and thrifty, issued cards for an afternoon party at her home, term ing it a "whang." The ladies invited were puzzled by the word, and didn't know how to dress, but finally ap peared in their most stunning toilets. When they arrived at the hour named 1 p. m. they found the house in disorder and everybody scrubbing for dear life. A "whang" is an old fashioned house-cleaning party, and some of the ladies who appeared on this occasion, dressed in their best style, found themselves at a great dis advantage.
