Do All The Cows Pay. a Profit?
It may be said of dairymen as of
those who are engaged in other
branches of farming too many of,
them fail to study the details of
their business, and as a conse
quence of this do not know, as they
should, how much their profits aro
reduced by losses that could be
prevented if they only understood
just where, these occurred. In al
most everv dairy herd a correctly
kept record would show that som ,
cows failed to return any.
urofit, and some made :t los;
by the end of the year, t lier
may be enough such cows tn Iho
herd to absorb all or iHMfly nil of
the profit from the best cows. In
only one way can this be tlett-r-mined,
and that is Ly keeping an
account of the yield of each cow.
It is not sufficient to find that the
herd, taken as a whole, has paid
a profit; for this could be inci cased
by weeding out the cows that
proved unprofitable. Doing this
may change the showing for the
whole herd, from one ol loss to
profit.
A herd of twenty cows that has
paid no profit may, on examining
the individual record of the cows,
show that eight or ten of them pay
a fair profit, and that the loss oc
curs on the rest of the herd. If
these profitable cows alono had been
kept the dairyman would have
been encouraged; his discourage
ment arises solely from his way ot
conducting his business. Every
dairyman should study his business
thoroughly, understand fully its
basis, and see that every part ot it
is attended to.
One of the first tilings for him
to understand is the lowest pro
duction from a cow that will yield
a proGt. "When he has determined
this he is prepared to judge cor
rectly of the value of his individ
ual cows. It is certainly easy for
him to determine how many
pounds of milk a cow must givo in
a season, if cheese-making, to ren
der her profitable. If ho takes a
medium price for cheese, say 10
cents, he can easily see that noth
ing less than 4,000 pounds of milk,
or 300 pounds oi cheese can pay a
profit. It is not possible to keep
a cow in any ot the dairy states for
less than 25, and if all the labor
be estimated at $10, the margin of
profit on tho above yield will be
but So. It will here be plain that he
cannot tell whether a cow is profit
able for cheese-making unless he
knows how many pounds she gives
in a season, lhis, then, is the
starting point. In the same way
he must know how manv pounds
of butter a cow will produce, if
butter is the product, before he
can have any basis for determining
the profit of the cow. All these
things must enter into his inven
tory at the end of the year; and
from this inventory he must de
termine, in the case of each cow,
whether she is worthy of being re
tamed in his herd. In the case of
a butter cow, it is not sufficient
for him to know the weight of her
milk, but he must know the pro
duction of that milk is butter.
"When brought to this test he will
often find a cow that gives 4,000
pounds of milk makes more butter
than another which gives 5,000
pounds. The value of the butter
cow depedns wholly upon her quan
tity and quality of butter. Why
should a dairyman keep a cow year
after year that does not pay for
her keeping? He certainly would
show poor busiuess judgement if
he did this knowingly, but there is
the difficulty ; he goes on year after
year losing money on certain cows,
simply because he will not take'
the trouble to find out iust what
they are doing.
As many of the cows come in
fresh at this season of the year, it
is a favorable time for dairymen
to begin keeping a record of the
yield ot each cow, with a view to
knowing what she has dene, when
her milking period ends.
