t,(wr f" -' (Z) i gaily gtffoto. ASTOBIA. OBEGON: SUNDAY. MAY 20, 168S. THE SHADOW IN HIGH PLACES. The reigning families of Europe have recently had a large share of trouble. Probably no ruler of mod ern times has had a more unbearable affliction than that which overtook the late Republican president of France. It illustrates the inspired declaration that a man's foes shall be of his own household. President Grevy's son-in-law, Wilson, ruined him. Death would have been a a much lighter affliction; and it is probable that the ex-president has more than once wished that Wilson had died before he knew him. The latter received a severe criminal sen tence on a conviction for an infamous traffic in decorations. The crime was traced home to him. Criminal con victions in France are without tho in tervention of a jury. The judge de clared in substance that by reason of Wilson's fortune and family his of fence was all tho more heinous. He had shocked the public conscience and tainted the public morals; and having '.barely missed compromising the dignity of tho nation, "the sen tence under the law would be without extenuation." President Grevy was forced out of office, the crown of his official honor broken in his old age If death had overtaken the French president, or had swept away his fam ily, the affliction would have had some mitigation. But there is none for. this old man, save the consciousness that he had no hand in the crimes of his son-in-law, and though for a time he defended him because he thought it impossible that such offences could be committed almost under his own eyes. Tho French president disap peared by a calamity worse than death. The Germnu emperor went to his long home at the closing of a very long life without one word of re proach, nor with less than profound regret from all well-meaning sub jects. And yet his death was proba bly hastened by the great affliotion that had overtaken his son. He grieved over the misfortune, hoped against hope, watched any reported change for the better. These royal characters are not less human because they occupy exalted positions. Ad versity and death overtake them with out any respect to rank. They are but common dust when they depart. The palace can no more shut out dis ease and death than the cottage of the peasant And now his son, the beloved "Un ser Fritz" the present emperor, is dy ing slowly, and any hour is liable to see his sad demise, and the imperial mausoleum at Charlottenburg will af ter a brief period be reopened to re ceive an illustrious but inanimate visitor within its somber portals. No greater reverses have befallen any ruling family thau those which overtook that of Louis Napoleon. He died in exile. The only son of his widow was killed in a miserable Afri can war, where he hopelessly sought distinction and fonnd only death at the hand of savages. The dethroned and childless widow is in exile, bear ing her griefs alone. Maximilian's widow is still a maniac, in her middle age, although she was once the nom inal empress of Mexico. Victoria early became a widow and has since lost two of her favorite children. The Bavarian king went insane and drowned himself in the presence of his keepers. Tho late German em peror assumed office as a regent when the mind of his living and ruling brother had utterly failed. The late czar of Bussia came to a tragic death at the hand of nihilists. THE MAKING OF PRESIDENTS The making of presidents is an occupation in which our voting citi zensare about to engage, and already the interest in the subject begins to be intense. Of course the newspapers have thus far been rather ahead of popular sentiment in this matter, but now I can .see that the people are awakening for the impending cam paign. Even at two of the week's funerals there was an undercurrent of talk relating tothissbjeot, because tue dead men in their d ay had been well started toward the White house. The quiet obsequies of Boscoe Conkling and the equally unpretentious burial of John T. Hoffman were the solemn climaxes of the careers of two famous politicians, one Democrat and the other Republican, who had been full? justified m the expectation of a presi dential nomination. Just about the same time I saw seated at the dinner in honor of Grant's birthday two candidates for the same distinction in Ghauncey M. Depew and Abram S. Hewitt, who had their lees under the same mahogany with "mentioned" men like George W. Childs and Gen eral Sherman. How they managed to cpnverse about either Grant's mem ory, or tho more trivial topics of the banquet, without occasionally trench ing upon politics, was a wonder to mo. On the ensuing evening I went to a burlesque performance at a Broadway thoater, where the inevit able topical song was a feature of the entertainment, and tho verses had each for a text some familiar nursery rhyme. One of these was the famous trip of Jack and Jill up the hill to get a pail of water, and bo on. The rhymes that ensued were as follows Oh, James G. B. and Grover C, Are going up the mountain, And each his hopeful pail lags he To nomination fountain; At this thero was a pricking up of ears, and it was eviedent that the audience was going to discriminate. The singer went en: Now Cleveland will at Free Trade rill Dip up all ho can carry, While at Protection springs to fill There Blaine will briefly tarry. At the mention of each uamo there was the beginning of applause, and it seemed as thonch tho vocalist would never get out of his verse without offending tho partisans of one or the other. But he did as follews: Bat ono will fall and empty nil His Free Trade or Protection; Whose nail keerts filled whose pad is spilled We'll see at next election. So the sincer managed to remaiu neutral in both sentiment and proph ecy, and the electioneering will pro ceed. Con-. tS. '. Call. Crouo.
