An Italian, who was traveling with a performing bear, stayed at a farm-house near Los Angeles one night. The boar was placed in tho barn for safe-keeping. Dur ing the night the family was aroused by a ternblo noise in the barn. Some one screaming "Mur der! Help!" and apparently en gaged in a struggle for life. The farmer hastened to tho spot, fol lowed by the Italian and others of the house, and found the tame bear with a man in his embracehug- ging htm tightly, while the poor leliosv struggled iranucany to es cape. The bear was muzzled and could do the man no seri.ius in jury, though he was uncomfortably situated, lhe man proved to oe a dishonest butcher, who had come to the barn to steal a fine calf. In the darkness lie had stumbled over the bear, who had seized and held him fast. The Italian, learn ing how matters stood called out, "Hug him, Jack," and the bear con tinued to hug him unmercifully until the farmer concluded that he had been sufficiently punished, when he was released. The story soon spread abroad, and the butch er left the neighborhood to escape the ridicule to which it subjected him. Sun Diego Clipper. llticltlou's Aruica ?ntic.
