A Country WhoBe Prisons Are if ever
Crowded.
Tn Morocco tlie prison system
is of charming simplicity, as in
faftt arc all decrees of DUDishment.
The Koran forbids the death pen
alty, although the Moors practice
the punishment of "an eye for an
evfi and a. tooth." and commit
murder on the slightest provoca
tion. Instead, tuereiere, ot exe
cuting a criminal, no matter how
horrible his crime, he is thrown
into a dungeon for perpetual im
prisonment, or until he can onoe
his way out. The prisons of Mo
rocco are either holes dug in the
ground or buildings with no win
dows or doors, there being simply
a trail at the Iod through which
the ciiminal is lowered into the
prison and his body hauled up
after he has rotted to death. In
to i1ipsi nrisons no one but the
criminal ever goes, and as no pro
vision is maue ior ms support uy
the government, his lease of life
depends simply on the number of
friends he has, and his- ability to
withstand the horrors of his dun
geon. This is, of course, not only
a more religious way of executing
criminals, but a cheaper way for
the sultan to punish his subjects;
for so tirevnlent is crime in .Moroc
co that in a short time every pris
on in the land would bo lined to
overflowing were it not for the
fart that if a ttrisoner has no
friends he will starve to death in
about a week, and if he has friends
he will rot to death in a few years,
p.vpn if disease does not strike in
and clean out the whole prison as
soon as hot weather sets in. xan
