The Astoriax-guarantees to Its adver tisers tiis largest circulation ol any newspa per published on the Columbia river. Astoria spends $300 lighting the streets. a month in F. M. Warren's fast steamer Puri tan lies at the Main street dock. Astoria is the largest city in the United States without a railroad. Astoria has a small city debt which was recently refunded at 6 per cent. Astoria mills send lumber to Arizo na, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and California. There will be a rehearsal of the Western Amateur band at eight o'clock this evening. Good judges of beauty say that As toria has more pretty girls than any city of its size in the northwest. The British bark Evelyn cleared yesterday. She carries to Queens town 18,974 bbls. flour, worth 863,409. In the justice court yesterday Mike Cavano, for assault and battery on Charley Lee, was fined S5 and costs. Dirigoclub flung their banner to the breeze yesterday at old armory hall. "Dingo'' is the motto of the state of Maine, and means "I direct." Astoria mechanics and machinists, engineors, pilots and steamboat masters are in every port and harbor from San Diego to Cook's inlet this summer. There are twenty-eight salmon can neries at and near Astoria, employing several thousand men who get the highest wages in thoir several de partments. At the time of the last great coal mine explosion in Nanaimo, one lodge in Astoria Seaside No. 12, A. O. U. W., sent over S2.200 to the relief of the widows and orphans of their Brit ish Columbia brethren. Astoria has eleven miles of water front where vessels drawing twenty two feet of water can load, discharge, and in safety depart. Thero is room in the bay for the entire shipping of the coast, foreign and domestic. The government printing office is engaged-in the compilation and pub lication, with maps and illustrations, of a report sent to the senate several months ago on the Columbia salmon fisheries. The report embraces ob servations made by the best informed men, and a description of the meth ods employed. From a little strip of water in front of the city, Astorians lift every year, without any preparatory sowing or cultivation, between 32000,000 and 83,000,000 worth of a product that is sought and finds a ready market the world over, and which bears the same relation to other fish that royal gold does to baser metals. The State is due from San Francis co this morning with the following passengers: Mrs. Chas. Hayneman, J. F. McEvan, D. Clark, Owen Mc Alear, Mrs. G. King and infant, Miss A. Baker, J. Hampton, B. Shill, G. A. Lansing, Wm. lsenger and wife, C. A. Lard, E. F. Cummings, L. A. Felton. For this city: J. M. Mason and wife, J. J. Stich. Quite a little romance terminated happily at Justice Cleveland's office last Monday night in the marriage of Mr. Frank Gamble, of the Clatsop mill and Miss Irene R. Ashley of Brookfield. Miss Ashley's folks had opposed the marriage, bnt true love always defeats its opposers and theyoung couple finding their plans thwarted eloped from Brookfield to this city, where judcre Cleveland soon made the twain two souls with but a single thought, two hearts that beat as one. A brother of tho bride fol lowed hotly after, but found that he had his trouble.for nothing, for by the time he got here they were married according to the laws and statutes of the commonwealth of Oregon. The river and harbor bill as passed by the house was sent to the senate yesterday, and it is believed the com mittee on commerce will take up its consideration immediately and en deavor to have it brought up for con sideration in the senate as soon as possible. There is a determination to send this bill to the president, so that, if he signs it, work on many of the improvements can be begun this summer. It is believed that the sen ate committee will increase some of the appropriations for the Pacific coast Senators Dolph and Mitchell propose to increase the appropria tions for Yaauina bav. the jettv at Fort Stevens, locks at the Cascades, the Dalles, Coos bay and other points in this state. It is thought that the senate will increase tho bill about three or four million dollars. The first street car drawn by a horse to run over and through tho streets of Astoria came tinkling down Squemoqua street yesterday after noon, crowded with passengers all eaear to have the first ride. Just who paid the first car far ia a question of doubt, but it is believed that sheriff Boss has Bood grounds for claiming that distinction. J. W. Conn was at the wheel, Fred Newell carried a bouquet bright with brilliant blooms, W. A. Sherman looked pensively over the dash board and the rest of the stock holders rode inside. The car No. One was run over the entire length of the track to see that the switches, etc, were all right. Everything worked all O'. IL. and the regular busi ness of the Astoria street railway company is expected to begin to-morrow. The projectors and owners of the line deservo credit for the energy displnyed in pushing the work along to a successful conclusion. THE ATSORIA B. & L. ASSOCIATION. San Francisco, May 7. In an in terview with Wm. T. Coleman to night, he said: Tho suspension is due to a want of immediate available cash. I needed $300,000 to meet obligations in New York due within a few days, ana could not raise it without maktng promises and assum ing obligations that I saw no proba bility of meeting. You see nil our money is out, and no large amounts are due us, nor will thoro ba for sev eral months. "One of tho principal factors in this calamity was our borax property in southern (Jaluornia. Wo thero inves ted abont a million, and were on the eve of selling for two million, when tho duty on that article was proposed to bo removed by congress. This prevented tho sale of the property, the proceeds from which vrout.l have met all of our obligations." "The difficulty assumed a sanom phase last fall, when the Nevada bank troubles occured. Then we owed that institution about 8300,000, and paid $100,000. The balauce of S200.000 was well secured, but some one, on looking ovor the bank's accounts since it proposed to place its stock on the market, declared this unsafe. Of course tho rumor spread, precipitating the crash in .New York. "As matters stand, no one that we are indebted to need to loso one dol lar, even though our assets should not realize over fifty cents on tho dollar of the estimated value of the assets. Should seventy-five cents bo realized thore will bo a handsome excess of resources, and with 100 cents on the dollar, which ought to be realized, tho firm will come out with a largo surplus. No embarrassmeut will be felt by any business men in the state nor by the poor and needy. The entiro indebtedness in California 13 comparatively small, the bulk be ing in New ioik and eastern states. A Warning. The modes of death's approach are various, and statistics show conclu sively that more persons die from dis eases of the Throat and Lungs than any other. It is probable that every one, without exception, receives vast numbers of Tubercle Germs into the system nnd where these germs fall upon suitable soil they start iuto life and develop, at first slowly and is shown by a slight tickling sensation in the throat and it allowed to con tinue their ravages they extend to the lungs producing Consumption and to the head, causing Catarrh. Now all this is dangerous and if allowed to proceed will in time cause death. At the onset you must act with prompt ness; allowing a cold to go without yonr attention is dangerous nnd may lose you'your life. As soon as you feel that something is wrong with yonr Throat, Lungs or Nostrils, ob tain a bottle of Boschee's German Syrup. It will give you immediate rolief. PERSONAL MENTION. J. G.
